Wayne and Margaret Solomon, owners, have spent their lives serving the people of Morgan County, following in the footsteps of Otto Schubert. “People in Morgan County have been very nice to us over the years,” said Wayne Solomon, “And they deserve a nice place.” Providing that place was important to Solomon but not something that he wants any special recognition for doing. As you enter the building there are two identical sitting areas with a fireplace in each. Over the fireplace to the left is a portrait of the founder Otto Schubert. There may or may not be a portrait over the fireplace to the right. Although some of the staff keeps placing a portrait of the Solomons there, he keeps taking it down. When told that for most today he is Mr. Schubert, he humbly acknowledges it and disclaims credit for doing anything special. “That’s very kind and quite the compliment,” he said. “But Mr. Schubert is the reason we’re here today.” Schubert Funeral Home opened in 1924 and Solomon worked helping out while he was still in high school. Then he went to work with Schubert in 1947 straight out of mortuary school. Solomon bought the business in 1972 when Otto Schubert passed away and he and his wife Margaret Schubert Solomon have continued to operate it through the subsequent 39 years. When Schubert Funeral Home was built on Kingston Street in 1953, it was uncertain whether or not people would embrace the concept. “Mr. Schubert was very progressive,” Solomon recalls. Up to that point, families took their loved one home and visitations were held there. Schubert’s decision to build the funeral home gave them a choice and it was a choice that has been embraced over the years. Solomon is continuing that tradition of letting families choose. The new building contains two chapels, one with interlocking chairs in place and one like the former location where chairs can be placed as needed. “Or if they want we can have visitation in the open chapel and then move to the other for the service,” Solomon said. If you weren’t able to make the open house on Sunday, you are still welcome to stop by and tour the new facility located across from Central Elementary School.
