>From The Oak Ridger 4 Dec 2003 Dan John Nuhrah, 82, of Oak Ridge, Marguerite Lenora Spray Howell Doyle, 94, of Albuquerque, N.M., Robert Avery Rollins Sr., 78, of Seattle, Wash., Ella Gray Guttery, 86, of Oak Ridge, ========================================= Dan John Nuhrah, 82, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born June 20, 1921, in New Orleans, La., he was the son of George Nuhrah and Marguerite Khoury Nuhrah. Mr. Nuhrah attended Dartmouth College in Massachusetts for two years. He was retired from Southern Railroad after 37 years of service, where he was a general foreman, and he worked at Wal-Mart in Oak Ridge as a greeter. He attended St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and his family said he was very active in the church. He served in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Nuhrah was a 32 degree Mason. His family said he wrote beautiful poetry. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. Arthur Nuhrah. Mr. Nuhrah is survived by his wife of 57 years, Esther T. Nuhrah; two sisters, May Cazenave and Ramona Duhy, both of Louisiana; a sister-in-law, Yvonne Nuhrah, of Florida; and by four daughters, Gail Trentham and husband, Ronnie, of Louisiana, Patricia Singleton and Peggy Volk and husband, Lou, all of Oak Ridge, and Jodi Majors and husband, Greg, of Lenoir City. He is also survived by two aunts, Leonie Khoury and Elaine Khoury, both of Louisiana; six grandchildren, Danny Shinn and wife, Sandy, Bobbie Smith and husband, Nevada, J.J. Singletary, Jamie Tupper and husband, James, Aaron Volk and Max Volk; three great-grandchildren, Harley, Lili and Savvy; and by several nieces and nephews. Shafik and Horia Iskander are considered special friends. The funeral is at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Craig Kallio and the Rev. Claire Keene officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Burial will be at the Memorial Gardens at the church following the service. Born June 27, 1909, in Maquoketa, Iowa, she was the daughter of Jack Howell and Chloe Alice Spray Howell. Mrs. Doyle had been a resident of Albuquerque since 1937. She had been a member of the Fruit Avenue Baptist Church and previously Riverside Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school classes for many years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James P. Doyle. Mrs. Doyle is survived by her sister, Cleora Beatrice Spray Howell Skov, of Waterton; her son, John H. Born Jan. 3, 1925, in Bellingham, Wash., he was the son of Jessie Lee Rollins and Elgia Mae Stead. Mr. Rollins served in the U.S. Army in World War II and Navy Reserves during the Korean conflict. He was employed by Boeing, as a draftsman on several projects involved with National Aeronautics and Space Administration. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Seattle. His family said he enjoyed fishing and playing pool, and he called himself a shade tree mechanic. Born Oct. 1, 1929, in Sparta, Ill., he was the son of Edward Hugh Benson and Laurence Sanders Benson. Mr. Benson received his bachelor's degree from Southern Illinois University. >From 1968 to 1970 he served as library director at Berry College in Rome, Ga., and from 1970 to 1984 he continued in that position at Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Okla. She then moved to West Memphis, Ark., in 1955, and later to Atlanta, Ga. While living in Arkansas, Mrs. Bowden managed the West Memphis Country Club, as well as The Kennel Club of the Southland Greyhound Park. She also managed the Olive Branch, Miss., Country Club, during that time. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Gatliff Bowden; a son, Jeffrey Bowden; and by a brother, Cecil Hodge and Ralph Hodge. He is survived by: their children and spouses, Linda and Michael Hughes of Charleston, S.C., Mary and Charles Gurney, Jr., of London, England, Ingrid and Mark Caldwell of Oak Ridge, and Christopher Gurney of Knoxville. He is survived by six grandchildren; Loren, Lisa and Brian Hughes and Alexander, Elizabeth and Savana Gurney. He is also survived by his wife, Patricia K. "Cookie" Spillers and her two daughters, Dr. Penny Knight of Morristown and Denise Leanne Defenderfer of Clinton, TN. In addition he is survived by two sisters and their spouses, Jane and Norman Teasley of Oak Ridge, and Jeannie and Nolan Carter of Clinton, S.C. A brother, John Gurney, died previously while in medical school. Dr. Gurney was a graduate of one of the first classes of Oak Ridge High School and continued his education at Erskine College where he received a degree in chemistry. He returned to Oak Ridge in 1950 and worked at the Y-12 Plant. In 1952 he followed in his grandfather's, father's and brother's footsteps and returned to school to become a doctor. He received his medical training at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Gurney returned to Oak Ridge in 1956 and worked in industrial medicine for Union Carbide Corporation. In 1957 he began a solo family practice which he sustained for over 35 years. For a number of years his practice included delivering babies many of whom still live in the area. Dr. Gurney, who retired in 1992, is fondly remembered by his patients as an "old fashioned" doctor and one who listened. He was appointed Chief of Staff of the Oak Ridge Hospital of the Methodist Church and served two years in the 1960's. He was also a member of the Roane Anderson Medical Society and served as its delegate to the Tennessee Medical Association several times. Interested in civic affairs, Dr. Gurney was elected to serve on the city's second charter commission charged with fine-tuning the city's original charter. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved to hike. He hiked for 17 consecutive years with the Oak Ridge "Social Climbers" to the top of Mount LaCont in the Smokies. It was on many of these fishing, hunting and hiking trips that the played the harmonica much to the delight of his friends. "Amazing Grace" was a favorite. His love for travel took him on journeys throughout the world. On one occasion he served as chaperone for the Oak Ridge High School's International Relations Club trip to Europe, a trip filled with interesting happenings. Prior to moving to Morristown in 1999, he was an active member of the Fellowship Class of First United Methodist Church. He also sang in the choir. A memorial service will be held Sunday, December 7, 2003, at 2:00 p.m., at First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge, 1350 Oak Ridge Turnpike, with Rev. Bill Mooney officiating. The family will welcome friends following the service and requests that memorial gifts be given to the Alzheimer's Association or a church or charity of choice. The family also offers deep and continuing thanks for those who lovingly and caringly supported them during Dr. Gurney's long and difficult illness. Arrangements by Cremation Options, Inc. He will be missed by all his friends and family. Preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Bernice (Ivey) White. Survivors: daughter, Beverly White of Knoxville; grandson, Michael "Charlie-Ray" Todd; sister and brother-in-law, Aileen and Bud Sparks of LaFollette; special nephew, Charles Willoughby and a niece, Connie Paul. At his request the body was cremated and no service is planned. Visitation was held Dec. 1 at the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home. Mr. Borgialli was born Aug. 18, 1929 in Newcastle, WY, the son of Joe and Lorena Weaver Borgialli. He was an oil well driller and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
