PROUD WIFE OF TENNESSEE ARMY NATIONAL GUARD SGT. CURRENTLY IN GERMANY. Hi List, My digging into the Ashe Co.,NC census records has left me with a few questions, hopefully some of you can help me with. On the 1800 Ashe Co. census there are four Norris families: Ephraim,Francis,Gilbert and John.I know that John and Ephraim are brothers and that Gilbert is John's son.Who is Francis? She has to be the widow of one of John and Ephraims brother's but which one?She is listed as follows: NORRIS,Francis-1 male 10-16,2 males 16-26 and then her listed as being over 45. On the 1810 census, same county,Ephraim is the only older Norris left.Gilbert and his brother John,Jr. are also still there. In 1820, Gilbert has moved to TN where his parents are.His brothers John JR.,William,Jonathan, and Thomas are still in Ashe Co.Also there are John and Isaac, that I assume are the sons of Ephraim.Which also leads to the question as to where the rest of John Sr. and Ephraim's brothers are?Did they stay in SC and not move to NC when their mother and other two brothers did?Or did they go someplace else? Now the Chambers question,on the 1800 Ashe Co. census are three Chambers,Enoch,Henry (my line, supposably) and James.I can assume that Henry and James are brothers since both are listed as being over 45.Who is Enoch the son of Henry or James? They are listed as follows: CHAMBERS,Enoch listed as being between 16-26,female listed as under 10,female listed as 16-26. CHAMBERS,Henry listed as being over 45,3 females under 10,one female 16-26. CHAMBERS,James listed as being over 45,1 male under 10,1 male 10-16,1 male 16-26,1 female 10-16,1 female 16-26,and 1 female over 45. Henry is the only one left in 1810.He is listed as follows: CHAMBERS,Henry listed as being over 45,3 males under 10,1 female under 10,1 female 10-16 and one female 26-45. This has to be Henry's second marriage.Due to the age difference in his wife and himself. Also due to the fact that if he is the father of Rachael wife of Gilbert Norris, she is already married by 1800.She is also about the same age as this wife. Anyone know anything about these three families? Thanks in advance for your help. Cathy
PROUD WIFE OF TENNESSEE ARMY NATIONAL GUARD SGT. CURRENTLY IN GERMANY. Hi List, I recieved this information last night, thought that I would pass it along. John Norris, Sr.,250 acres, valued at $500; located on New River (the most valuable land then and now);also 25 acres, valued at $6.25 on Grassy Creek.Grassy Creek is in south Ashe Co. near the Watauga Co. border and flows into the south branch of New River,no poll.Since there is no poll tax John was over 50 years of age, since few young men could own this much land in 1815. Right next to John Norris,Sr. is an odd notation "75 acres, valued at $20 Wm. Norris" I can't tell whether this means that it is WIlliam's land or if this is a 3rd plot belonging to John that borders land belonging to Wm. NORRIS,Gilbert Page 12 It reads as follows: Gilbert Norris,100 acres, valued at $150, one poll:land located Meat Camp;also 100 acres, valued at $30 north fork New River (Meat Camp ia a very old Colonial place name on the border with presend day She and Watauga Cos.where early pioneers met to trade and slaughter game.We pass it often on our way to Boone on the weekends. This additional information is from Sandra Lassen the lady that did the lookup for me.She always goes back and looks at the gazetteer to see where the land actually is.) John Norris,100 acres, valued at $150,one poll;land joins Gilbert Norris;no location, but would be near one of Gilbert's plots.Gilbert owned land on Meat Camp and on the north fork of New River. John Potter,199 acres, valued at $80;no poll;on North Fork (which may be the fork of New River or a community on the NC/TN line);next to Reubin Potter,50 acres, valued at $80,one poll.(okay GLENNA if this is our John, he was either born before 1770 or after 1790.Also this Reubin must be his relative. It is also strange, John wasn't on the 1800,1810 or the 1820 Ashe Co. census records.Yet he owns land there in 1815.The only Potter was on the 1800 Census and it was Abraham Potter listed as being over 45,wife between 16-45,2 males under 10 and 2 females under 10) Tobias Long,200 acres,$100;one poll,no location given. John Long,750 acres,$400;one poll,no location given. John Long,Sr.,350 acres,$300,one poll;on Cranberry (probably in northeast Ashe ,Cranberry Creek, in present day Alleghany Co.) Cathy Martin
