"Red" Willis, 73, Martin Taylor \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ John Brock Bittle, 89, of Lake City, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004. Born Feb. 18, 1914, making him one month shy of 90 years old when he died, he was the son of W.J. and Rosa Bittle. In his life, he worked at Magnet Mills in Clinton until moving to Oak Ridge to work at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant. He then moved to Lake City to work with his brother, Chris Bittle, at the Corner Drug Store until his brother died. In 1972, Mr. Bittle retired from Ortec. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Lake City, where he served as a deacon. According to his family, Mr. Bittle helped raise his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His family and friends called him D.D., which his family said he loved to be called. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two children, Mary Chris Lambermont and Tony Bittle; and by four siblings, Chris, James, Mary Ingram and Martha Devaney. Mr. Bittle is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary Ellen "Doc" Stair Bittle; his grandson, Brock Rains and wife, Terri; two great-grandsons, David Rains and Christopher Rains; his granddaughter, Leora Wallace and husband, Greg; and by two great-grandchildren, Chrissy Manning and Dusty Manning. Jean Montgomery of Clinton and Ned and Janice Lambermont of Fairhope, Ala., are considered special friends of Mr. Bittle and his wife. A memorial service will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Brian Courtney of Lake City Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be at Leach Cemetery in Lake City. The family requests that any memorials be in the form of contributions to the Leach Cemetery Grounds Funds, 330 Old Clear Branch Lane, Lake City, TN 37769. William Albert Johnson, 73, of Norris, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. He was born April 14, 1930, in Brooksville, Fla. Mr. Johnson was an art and picture framer for 25 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was also a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Norris. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife of 35 years, Dot Johnson; his daughter, Eve Johnson, of New Port News, Va.; two sons, William Al Johnson and George Johnson, both of Chattanooga; two stepdaughters, Dana Ellis of Birmingham, Ala., and Paula McCarthy of Ackron, Ohio; three stepsons, Martin Ellis of Caryville, Bernie Ellis of Santa Fe and Steve Ellis of Columbus, Miss.; and by several grandchildren and stepgrandchildren. A funeral Mass was to be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Norris with the Rev. Gerard Finucane officiating. Burial was to follow at Norris Memorial Gardens off the Norris Freeway near Cross Pike Road. The family was to receive friends beginning at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is in charge of arrangements. James H. "Red" Willis, 73, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge, after a short battle with colon cancer. He was a Baptist. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps serving in Japan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert H. Willis and Clara Belle Willis; a brother, J.C. Willis; and by a granddaughter, Brandy Lynn Carter. Mr. Willis is survived by his wife, Joyce Willis, of Clinton; two daughters, Sonya Franklin and husband, Shawn, of Oak Ridge, and Lynn Carter and husband, Ronnie, of Clinton; his son, Eddie Willis and wife, Bobbie, of Clinton; and by three grandchildren, Lee Carter, Cody Franklin and Chloe Willis. He is also survived by four sisters, Belle Caulder of Oakland, Miss., Margie Logan and husband, Junior, and Dianne Crafton and husband, Ralph, all of South Haven, Miss., and Alice Willis of Memphis; three brothers, Bob Willis and wife, Ellen, of Culpepper, Va., Richard Willis and wife, Irene, of Grantsville, Utah, and Dee Willis of Memphis; a special aunt, Kathryn Hauthorn of Vicksburg, Miss.; and by several nieces and nephews. The funeral was Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Tony McAfee officiating. Burial was to be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, at Anderson Memorial Gardens on the Oliver Springs Highway in Clinton with full military rites by the Campbell County Honor Guard. Martin Taylor, of Brownsville, the son of the Rev. Jim and Pat Taylor of Oak Ridge, died in Brownsville. Marie Muller, 90, of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at The Estates of Oak Ridge, of complications of congestive heart failure. Born June 6, 1913, in Holle, Germany, she was the daughter of Hermine and Wilhelm Vasterling. In her late-teen years, she worked as a homemaker for a prominent Lutheran pastor's family in Hildesheim. In 1936, she married Henry Muller of Ringstedt. They moved to Weissenfels in 1938, where she worked for a dairy company. They fled East Germany with their two daughters in 1946 to Henry Muller's boyhood home in the West. In 1950, she immigrated with her family to Brooklyn, N.Y. It was there she learned the confectionery business at the store of her sister-in-law and spouse. Her family said the focal point of her life was her family. The Mullers purchased their first business in New York, N.Y., in 1954. They then moved to Long Island, N.Y., where they bought a second ice cream parlor/luncheonette. Their store was recognized for its excellent chocolate-Easter confections and lunch trade. Mrs. Muller retired with her husband from business in 1974 and moved to Whiting, N.J. She was an avid vegetable gardener who shared her produce with the entire neighborhood. She enjoyed making ceramic crafts which still decorate her families' homes. Mrs. Muller and her spouse moved to Oak Ridge on March 15, 2000, to The Estates of Oak Ridge. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years in September 2002; a brother, Ewald Vasterling; and by a sister, Herta Klussmann. Mrs. Muller is survived by her daughters, Sigrid Ludemann and husband, Carl, of Oak Ridge, and RoseMarie Johnson of Whiting, N.J.; four grandchildren, Donald Ludemann and wife, Debra, of St. Paul, Minn., Carol Ludemann Barcus and husband, John, of Huron, Ohio, Eva Johnson Oliver and husband, Thomas, of Chester, N.H., and David Johnson of Austin, Texas; and by four great-grandchildren, Colin Barcus of Notre Dame, Ind., Matthew Barcus and Geoffrey Barcus, both of Huron, and Heather Oliver of Chester; and by two sisters, Elfriede Domhöver and Brunhilde Wege, both of Germany. A memorial service was held Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at Grace Lutheran Church with the Rev. Stephen Damos officiating. Richard Clifton "Wick" Rather, 82, of Oliver Springs, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at his home. Born May 19, 1921, in the Wheat community of Roane County, he was the son of Jackson K. Rather and Elsie Hembree Rather. Mr. Rather was a U.S. Navy veteran and served in World War II. He was a retired teamster, truck driver, retiring in 1984 after working for 30 years. He attended New Fairview Baptist Church in Oliver Springs. According to his family, Mr. Rather raised parrots. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Freels and husband, Ben; a brother, Floyd Rather; and by two brothers-in-law, Alvin Stout and Vann Hatfield. Mr. Rather is survived by his wife of 56 years, June Rutherford Rather; his daughter, Judy Buchanan and husband, Jack, of Karns; two sons, James Rather of Newport Beach, Calif., and Rick Rather and wife, Debbie, of Palm Bay, Fla.; and by three grandchildren, Keith Rather and wife, Carrie, of Palm Bay, and Christopher Buchanan and Brandon Buchanan, both of Kingsport. He is also survived by two brothers, Don Rather and wife, Anna, and Jack Rather and wife, Geraldine, all of Oliver Springs; and by four sisters, Lillie Hatfield of Baltimore, Md., Ruth Stout of Kingsport, Irene Jones and husband, Roger, of Coalfield, and Shirley Goodman and husband, Fred, of Karns. She was the eldest member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church and was the treasurer of the Catholic Women's Group for 40 years. Her family, as Italian immigrants, helped to build the first Catholic Church in LaFollette. Preceded in death by her husband, James L. Stratton; parents, Giacinto Lobertini and Leonilda Ramello Lobertini; brothers, Frank, Leo, and Lew Lobertini; sisters, Caroline Lobertini, Margaret Guy and Marie Burns. Survivors include her daughter, Martha Ann Laxton and husband, Gary; son, James W. John was born on February 18, 1914, making him one month shy of 90 years old at his passing. In his life he worked for Magnet Mills until moving to Oak Ridge to work for Tennessee Eastman, Y-12. He then moved to Lake City to work with his brother, Chris Bittle, at the Corner Drug Store until Chris had passed. In 1972, John retired from Ortec. Also, he was a member and Deacon of First Baptist Church of Lake City. John helped raise his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Family and friends called him D.D., which he loved to be called so much. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary Ellen Stair Bittle (Doc); grandson, Brock & wife, Terri Rains; and great-grandsons, David & Christopher Rains; granddaughter, Leora & husband, Greg Wallace; and great- grandchildren, Chrissy & Dusty Manning; special friends of D.D. and Doc are Jean Montgomery of Clinton, and Ned & Janice Lambermont of Fairhope, Alabama. Mrs. Bright is survived by two sons, Kirk Bright and wife, Ellen of Spring City, Mark Bright and wife, Margie of Clinton; three grandchildren, Kelly Amanns, Kris Bright and wife, Liping, Amy Talley and husband, Adam; several great-grandchildren; brothers, Harrison Kirk and wife, Nancy of Maryville, Cloyd Kirk and wife, Helen of Athens; sisters, Audrey Heckert and Dottie Sutton of Maryville; several nieces and nephews who loved her;. and a very special friend, Levi Bailey. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, 11 AM at Oak Ridge Memorial Park with Dr. Roy Graves officiating. The family requests that memorials be in the form of contributions to their favorite charity.     3. MILLER, HELEN PEARSON, Fayetteville, N.C., formerly of Gobey, TN., died Dec. 30, 2003 at her home in Fayetteville. Miller was raised on a farm in the Elizabeth community near Gobey and spent all her teenage years on the farm. Her parents were Harvey and Maggie Pearson. She met and married her husband, Robert, in 1949 and moved to Fayetteville,N.C., where her husband was stationed with the 82nd Airborne Special Forces at Fort Bragg. She was strictly a military wife, often being left behind for long periods of time while her husband served in Vietnam. Her husband was a career military person and served in WW II, Korea and Vietnam. She always managed to understand the reason her husband had to be away. In April 2003 she was diagnosed with cancer. Although she suffered constantly, she never lost her sense of humor or her smile. She was a devout Christian and attended church regularly. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Maggie Pearson; husband, Robert V. Miller; brothers, Carson and Reid Sexton; sisters, Hattie Tilson and Johnnie Jones and nephew Elmer Jones. Survivors include son, Mark Miller and wife, Carol of Wilmington, N.C.; daughter Yvonne M. Pierce; grandsons, Alex and Jacob Miller; granddaughters, Marcie and husband Terry Thompson, and Lisa Pierce; sister, Opal Maden of Harriman and a host of nieces and nephews.
