I thought everyone would want to know what is happening in one of our states that could cause genealogists problems. Last Saturday, March 13, in the WV Legislature,House Bill 4330 passed. It is now awaiting signature from Governor Wise to make it law. If you are a family genealogist/historian whose research involves West Virginia, then this bill affects your work whether you live in West Virginia or another state. If Governor Wise signs HB 4330, all birth records will be closed to public access for 100 years and all death records closed for 50 years. We are all concerned about privacy issues but HB 4330 in its current format is too restrictive. Please email Governor Wise and address your concerns. Don't delay. Hi, Thought this might interest some of the Newport researchers. Emma Jean NEWPORT b. March 25, 1902, in Scott County, TN, daughter of Ezekiel NEWPORT and Louverna PHILLIPS NEWPORT ADKINS of Scott County, TN will be celebrating her 102nd birthday this year in Cincinnati, OH. She and is my Great Aunt Jean. I have never met her but have talked to her on the phone. She married Paul J. FORAN and had 2 children, James and Janet. She is living in an assisted living apartment in Cincinnati. My cousin Mary Craig said she likes to talk about old times and is still very sharp. She doesn't remember anything about her father, Ezekiel NEWPORT because she was just 4 months old when he died. It still amazes me that someone is still living with direct connections to 1835 when her father was born!! Ezekiel NEWPORT's first wife was Eliza Jane REED. In later years Grandma Newport (Louverna Phillips Newport) married Grandpa Adkins (John C. ADKINS' first wife was Martha LAY) but she didn't like Sunbright and went back home to Huntsville. I still haven't found a divorce record. One of the family history stories that completely messed up my FTM and doubled everyone's pages!!! My father was Harold NEWPORT, son of Henry Carson NEWPORT and Laura ADKINS(daughter of John C. ADKINS and Martha LAY). Henry Carson NEWPORT was the son of Ezekiel NEWPORT and Louverna PHILLIPS. Yarosh, 77, Marilyn Pauline Revare Combs, 76, of Oak Ridge, died Monday, March 15, 2004, at Life Care Center in Wartburg, of complications from a massive stroke. Born July 21, 1927, in Portsmouth, Ohio, she was the daughter of Paul Herman and Irene Louise Revare. She grew up and attended high school in Portsmouth, and married her childhood sweetheart, Steve "Doc" Combs. Before starting her family, Mrs. Combs worked at the Royal Music Co. in Bowling Green, Ky. She moved to Oak Ridge with her husband and young family in 1960, where her husband was employed with the Oak Ridge schools as band director at Oak Ridge High School. After the couple's eldest daughter started school, Mrs. Combs worked in retail at Miller's Department Store and J.C. Penney Co. She was later employed as a purchasing and administrative assistant with Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Comparative Animal Research Laboratory, and for Martin Marietta Energy Systems at the Y-12 Plant. Her family was the center of her life but in later years she was a volunteer at Recording for the Blind, enjoyed bowling, playing canasta, Body Recall exercise classes, traveling and the life of a wife of a music director, her family said. She was at one time a member of the United Church, Chapel on the Hill, but later became a member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church. In addition to her husband of 56 years, Mrs. Combs is survived by four daughters, Judith Stephanie Evans and husband, John of Port Saint Joe, Fla., Victoria Celeste Rose of Athens, Ala., Leslie Susan Homan and husband, David, of Murfreesboro, and Virginia Reid Stevens and husband, George, of Ooltewah; a sister, Janet Irene Revare of Portsmouth; and by 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Her family said she longed for a cure for the disease from which she suffered. Her body was donated to the James H. Quillen, College of Medicine, at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City. A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 20, 2004, at Covenant Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends at 3 p.m. Saturday at the church. Former Oak Ridger and Cocoa Beach (Florida) city commissioner Marvin M. Yarosh, 77, died Saturday, March 6, 2004, at Cape Canaveral Hospital in Cocoa Beach, after a lengthy illness. Elected to the Cocoa Beach City Council in 1992, Mr. Yarosh was a leading researcher in atomic and solar energy, and the founding director of the Florida Solar Energy Center. He also served as a member of the faculty and later as professor emeritus, at the University of Central Florida. The son of working-class Russian immigrants, he was born March 26, 1926, in Minneapolis, Minn. As a youngster, he showed great athletic promise, but his father, a toolmaker by trade, had other plans for his son. At age 16, he was enrolled in the University of Minnesota's School of Engineering. He had great talent in engineering and physics, earning a master of science degree in mechanical engineering with high honors in 1950, and then taught in the University's Engineering Department. The early 1950s was a time of rapid experimentation and development in the emerging field of nuclear energy. After marrying Shirley Green of St. Paul, Minn., they moved to Oak Ridge, where Mr. Yarosh worked as a design engineer, first at the former Gaseous Diffusion Plant, K-25, and then at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, X-10. For the next two decades, he worked as a member of the senior staff at ORNL, holding a variety of positions involving high-level interactions with the Atomic Energy Commission, the President's Office of Science and Technology, and the Ford Foundation. In addition, from 1967 until 1969, he and his family lived in Sydney, Australia, where he served as a special consultant to the Australian Atomic Energy Commission. In 1973, at the personal request of then Florida Gov. Rueben Askew, Mr. Yarosh took what he thought would be a two-year leave of absence from ORNL to assist the state of Florida in developing a long-term energy policy. In his new position as executive director of the Florida Energy Committee, and in the midst of an Arab oil embargo, he quickly laid the groundwork for a comprehensive state energy policy. A cornerstone of that policy was legislation drafted to create and establish the Florida Solar Energy Center. After overseeing the passage of that legislation, he moved to Cocoa Beach, where he organized and helped to establish the Solar Energy Center. He was the founding executive director, and during his 13 years of leadership, he shaped the Solar Energy Center into one of the world's leading research development and training centers in its field. Mr. Yarosh, who was a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and a Professional Engineer, retired from the Solar Center in 1992 and spent the next three years privately consulting on energy-related issues. Also in 1992, he was approached by a group of local citizens and asked to run as a candidate for the Cocoa Beach City Council. He entered the race and was elected to a three-year term as city commissioner. During his tenure on the Council, Mr. Yarosh distinguished himself with his thoughtful, common-sense approach to city planning. After completing his term, he returned to private life, where he continued to consult on a wide range of energy-related issues. In addition to his wife of 52 years, Mr. Yarosh is survived by his three children, Cindy Yarosh of Titusville, Fla., Steve Yarosh and his wife, Irma Valdez, of Portland, Ore., and Dara Yarosh and her husband, Pierre Gravelat of Titusville; and by his two grandsons, Axel Gravelat and Morgan Gravelat, both of Titusville. Memorial services were held in Cocoa Beach on March 11, 2004. Officiating the service was cantor and spiritual leader, Patricia Ernest-Hickman, of Beth Israel Temple. She was the daughter of the Rev. T.R. and Christine Oakes, both now deceased. She grew up in Andersonville and attended Norris schools. She was later a resident of Oak Ridge and attended Roane State Community College, where she earned an associate's degree in business administration in 1985 and an associate's degree in radiologic technology in 1993. Before her illness, she was employed by Mercy Hospital in Cincinnati. According to her family, she was also a talented seamstress and enjoyed classical music, reading and traveling. She adored her grandchildren and loved spending time with them. She was a treasured mother and sister to her daughters and siblings, her family said. She is survived by her daughters, Lisa Hire and husband, John, of Dallas, Texas, Lynn Woody and husband, Denny, of Memphis, Tisha Bryan and husband, Sam, of Richland, Wash., and Laurie Gibson and husband, Jimmy, of Cincinnati; and her granddaughters, Zoe Woody, Lauren Bryan, Hannah Bryan, Claire Gibson and Chloe Gibson. Jack Starr Denton, 78, of Lenoir City, died Sunday, March 14, 2004, at Fort Sanders Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville after complications from Alzheimer's disease. Born April 21, 1925, in the Martel community, he was the son of Tom and Ada Starr Denton. Mr. Denton was married to Agnes Davis Denton for over 58 years, and according to his family he was a devoted and wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was an active member of Central United Methodist Church for over 60 years. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army serving with the 100th Division and was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Mr. Denton graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1950 and his family said he was a dedicated volunteer for life. He was an employee of the federal government for 41 years with Tennessee Valley Authority, Atomic Energy Commission, Energy Research and Development administration and the Department of Energy, where he retired as director of safeguards and security for DOE facilities in seven states and Puerto Rico. A longtime Rotarian, Mr. Denton was a past president of Lenoir City Rotary Club. He was chairman of the Civil Service Board for Lenoir City and a longterm member of the Loudon County Planning Commission. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Michael Denton; five brothers, Alvin Denton and wife, Hazel, Paul Denton and wife, Elizabeth, J. B. Denton and wife, Ernestine, Tom Denton and wife, Sue, and George Denton; three sisters, Blanche Nichols and husband, Leon, Frances Cardwell and husband, Jesse, and Rosalie Lee; and by a brother-in-law, Tom Perala. RIDINGS, CURTIS WILLIAM - age 87 of Oak Ridge, Anderson County, Tennessee, went to be with the Lord on the 14th day of March, 2004. Curt, the son of Doc James Ridings and Celia Goins, was born in Ramey, Tennessee on April 22, 1916. He attended grade school in Egan and Coal Creek (Lake City). He was one of 8 children who were: Virgil, Boyd, Laura Smith-Leach, Lois Ridings Walden, Claude, Beaties Hill-Devor, and un-named brother who died at birth. He was a life long member of the Egan Baptist Church where he, at the age of 10, was baptized in a creek behind the church, the same creek his mother Celia washed their clothes. He attended the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Oak Ridge. As a very young boy, Curt worked a short time for Blue Diamond Coal Company in Egan, removing the coal pillars that supported the mine chambers. He worked in his fathers business crushing rock that was used for the roads in Lake City. He opened the first Special Delivery Mail Service in Oak Ridge. He then worked in Clinton, Tennessee at the Clinton Hosiery Mill for whom he also played softball. Curt was an avid sports enthusiast, participating in baseball, softball, bowling, and golf programs through out Anderson County. Curt, for many years, operated a furniture moving company named Ridings Transfer. Curt worked in quality control and retired from Y-12 at the age of 64 after 28 years of service. He was a Mason and member of the Clinton Lodge 376 (since 1956) Clinton, Tennessee. He was survived by: his first wife of 49 years, Irene Foust Ridings; daughter, Connie Jean Ridings; son, Mickey J. Ridings (Teresa); grandchildren, John G. Ridings, M. Rhett Ridings; and step grandchildren, LeeAnna J. and Brooke N. Henry; great grandchildren, Emily Kate and Henry Matthew Ridings. Clark, 89, of Oak Ridge, formerly of Rogersville, died Friday, March 12, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Mr. Clark moved his wife and family to Oak Ridge in 1945. He was one of the first barbers in Oak Ridge. He first started cutting hair at Oak Ridge Townsite, later known as Jackson Square. After barbering there and in the Downtown Shopping Center for 29 years, he opened Clark's Barber Shop in 1974 in Jackson Square next to the Soup Kitchen. He retired and closed the barber shop in 1998. According to his family, many will remember his hair cuts and the great conversations. His family said he was known for his award winning African violets, beekeeping and honey-making. According to his family, Mr. Clark also had many inventions, including his planter flower pots, paint brush guard, bird feeders, bedside toilet chair and Clark's Miracle Anti-fungus foot medicine. He was featured in The Oak Ridger numerous times during his life. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kate B. Clark; his brother, Jonathan D. Clark; and by his son-in-law, Henry Aguirre. Mr. Clark is survived by his son, Jack Livesay and wife, Camille, of Oak Ridge; his daughter, Lynda Aguirre of Oak Ridge; his son, Gary Clark and wife, Teresa, of Tucson, Ariz.; eight grandchildren, Mark Livesay and wife, Marsha, of Knoxville, Susie Foust of Oliver Spring, Debbie Denton and husband, Jeff, of Oliver Springs, Richard Burns of Atlanta, Ga., Michael Burns and wife, Lee, of Aviono, Italy, Tracy Chemburker and husband, Sujit, of Lees Summit, Mo., and Gavin Clark and Brandon Clark, both of Tucson; his niece, Betty Campbell and husband, Joe, of Knoxville; and by eight great-grandchildren, Nicole Foust, Brad Foust, Ashley Denton Turpin, Jeffrey Denton, Rachal Livesay, Kristin Livesay, Brittany Burns and Eliahna Burns. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Monday, March 15, 2004, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Aldana Allen officiating. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 16, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The Volunteer State War Era Honor Guard will conduct full military rites. Teresa Compere Henry, a graduate of Webb School and attended the University of Tennessee and Merrimac College, had boundless enthusiasm for a wide range of eclectic topics, her family said. According to her family, she was very devoted to her husband, John James Henry Jr., and to her children, Maria Alexandra, Laura Amanda and Rebecca Elizabeth. Personal computers were a major interest in her life, starting around 1974 when she joined an explorer Scout Troop focused on early computers. Her family said this grew into a lifelong passion which Mrs. Henry enjoyed sharing with a wide range of friends and Computer King customers. Her enthusiasm led her to become vice-president of vendor relations for the East Tennessee Computer Society and to write an educational column for its newsletter. According to her family, the critically acclaimed column won first place in educational writing from the National Association of Computer Users. Her family said she particularly enjoyed assisting both schools the and The Florence Crittenton Agency with software. For 18 years, she was a public relations chairperson for Pellissippi Beautification Committee. In addition to her husband, children and her mother, Maria Compere, Mrs. Henry is survived by two sisters, Alicia and Suzy; and her parents-in-law, Jim and Audrey Henry. Kaonohi, 64, of Oliver Springs, died Friday, March 12, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born Nov. 6, 1939, in Lahanina Maui, Hawaii, he was the son of Peter and Emma Wata Kaonohi. Mr. Kaonohi was currently working as a correctional officer with Anderson County Sheriff's Department. He retiring as chief petty officer with the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jane Kaonohi, on Feb. 28, 2004. Mr. Kaonohi is survived by his daughter, Kathy Waddell, of Peoria, Ill.; his stepson, Michael W. Born April 22, 1916, in Ramey, he was the son of Doc James Ridings and Celia Goins. Mr. Ridings attended grade school in Egan and Coal Creek. He was one of eight children, Virgil, Boyd, Laura Smith-Leach, Lois Ridings Walden, Claude, Beaties Hill-Devor, and an un-named brother who died at birth. He was a lifelong member of Egan Baptist Church, where at the age of 10 he was baptized in a creek behind the church, the same creek his mother washed their clothes. In Oak Ridge, he attended Cumberland Presbyterian Church. As a young boy, he worked a short time for Blue Diamond Coal Co. in Egan, removing the coal pillars that supported the mine chambers. He worked in his father's business crushing rock that was used for the roads in Lake City. Mr. Ridings opened the first special delivery mail service in Oak Ridge. He then worked in Clinton at Clinton Hosiery Mill and played softball for the company team. His family said he was an avid sports enthusiast participating in baseball, softball, bowling and golf programs throughout Anderson County. He operated a furniture moving company, Ridings Transfer, for many years. He worked in quality control and retired from the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant at the age of 64 after 28 years of service. He was a mason and had been a member of Clinton Masonic Lodge, No. 376, since 1956. Mr. Ridings is survived by his first wife of 49 years, Irene Foust Ridings; his daughter, Connie Jean Ridings; his son, Mickey J. Ridings and wife, Teresa; two grandchildren, John G. Ridings and M.
