    2. >From The Oak Ridger 10 Jul 2007 Dorothy Lucille McWright, age 88, of Oak Ridge, passed away Monday, July 9, 2007, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Mrs. McWright was born Dec. 20, 1918, in Harriman to the late Elmer and Rose Dickey Weaver. A member of the West Village Christian Church, Mrs. McWright had been employed at Y-12 as a laboratory technician until her retirement. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and was a member of the Eastern Star Chapter 390 here in Oak Ridge. Preceded in death by her first husband Woodrow Litton, son Gary W. Litton, and her brother Sam E. Hope, Mrs. McWright is survived by her husband, Cullen P. McWright of Oak Ridge; son, Douglas L. Litton of Marshville, N.C.; stepdaughters, Mary Jane Williams of Oak Ridge and Barbara Pruitt of Newark, Del.; brothers, Charles J. Hope of Oak Ridge and B.F. Hope Jr. of Harriman; sisters, Mildred Eitel of West Palm Beach, Fla., Virginia Graham of Jacksonville, Fla., Clara J. Wilcoxin of Evansville, Ind., and Betty Floyd of Oak Ridge; grandchildren, Kim, Brad, and Kristy; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 11, 2007, at 6 p.m. at the West Village Christian Church with the Rev. Brian Lakin officiating. Lucile Nichols, our beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend, died July 8, 2007, on her 89th birthday from injuries received in an automobile accident on June 27, 2007. She was born in McMinn County and grew up in Knox County where she met the love of her life, Ray Nichols. They celebrated 73 years of marriage Oct. 28, 2006, and were recognized as the oldest living married couple in Monroe County. Lucile was preceded in death by infant son, James Richard Nichols; parents, Charles and Grace Webb of Kodak; brothers, Roy, Ray, and Earl Webb of Knoxville; and sister, Viola Webb of Athens. Lucile is survived by husband, Ray Nichols of Sweetwater; daughter and son-in-law, Erb and Frances Mowery of Clinton; sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby and Anita Nichols of Knoxville, and Ted and Ruth Nichols of Sweetwater. Grandchildren are Kendra Hill of Athens, Kelly Nichols of Sweetwater, Vicki McKamey (Don) of Clinton, Robert Mowery (Carolyn) of Caryville, Donna McPheeters of Knoxville, Cindy Nichols of Knoxville, and Bobby Ray (Nick) Nichols (Cindy) of Knoxville, 17 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters, Jerry (John) McCall of Knoxville and Mary Dorothy Evans of Halls; brothers, Harry (Helen) Webb of Maynardville and Claude (Mayme) Webb of Sevierville; sister-in-law, Ursa Donovan of Hardin Valley; and good friend, Betty Thompson. Lucile was a member of Fairview Baptist Church for 56 years and dearly loved her church family. One of Lucile's greatest joys was cooking for her family. If she knew you were coming, your favorite food was on the table. Lucile was a master quilter who quilted wedding and baby quilts for every child, grandchild, great-grandchild and great-great-grandchild. She enjoyed gardening, both vegetable and flower, but loved her roses. Most of all, she loved her family, and they all knew it. He was born in Anderson County, (Clinton) Tenn., the son of the late Earl Plumley and Ruby Slover Clough. He attended schools in Anderson County. He was employed by the Civil Service in Washington, D.C., and in 1942 he became associated with elevator maintenance and later was in the elevator construction business with Westinghouse, Otis, and Homer Elevator companies. He returned to Memphis in 1976. He later worked for Guardsmark, retiring in 1985, and moving to Erin, Tenn. He moved to Henderson, Tenn., in 1995. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Henderson. He is survived by a son, Michael Earl Clough and his wife, Judy, of Collierville, Tenn.; a daughter, Diane Eulene Manns of Walls, Miss.; a grandson, Brian Manns; and a brother, C.R. Clough Sr. of Oak Ridge, Tenn. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eulene Weaver Clough, in 2002. Creighton, age 69, of Harriman and formerly of Oak Ridge, passed away Thursday, July 5, 2007, at the Marshall C. Voss Health Care Facility in Harriman. Ms. Creighton was born April 17, 1938, in Decatur, Ill., to the late John and Neta Creek Creighton. She worked as a waitress in Oak Ridge for many years. She is survived by two sons, Calvin Waller and wife, Tanya, of Jacksonville, Fla., and Charles Waller; and one daughter, Krista Slezinsky and husband, Robert, of Beeville, Texas; sister, Betty Greutman and husband, Mel, of Flat Rock, Mich.; and four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Anthony Wayne Davidson, age 32, of Oak Ridge, Tenn., born June 28, 1974, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 27, 2007, at Forrest City Medical Center in Forrest City, Ark. Anthony, also known as "Big Boo-Boo," is the son of Sally Davidson and stepfather, George Lester. He enjoyed fishing, detailing cars, making music and, most of all, cooking and hanging out with his family and friends. Anthony was well known by everyone for having a big heart and helping anyone anyway he could. He was preceded in death by his father, Eugene Downing Jr.; grandfathers, Eugene Downing Sr. and William Davidson; grandmother, Ethel Davidson; aunt, Minnie Bates; uncles, Joseph Downing and Thomas Davidson; and very close friend, Terrance LaShaun Mims. Bonnie Clark Dunkel died on July 7, 2007, at her residence in Rancho Viejo. Born April 20, 1932, in Springfield, Tennessee, Bonnie grew up in Oak Ridge. She was a graduate of Oak Ridge High School and attended the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. She remained in Oak Ridge until 1973, when she moved to Columbus, Ohio, as a manufacturers representative with Golan and Sinton Inc. In November 1973, she married John Dunkel of Upper Arlington, Ohio, where they resided until retirement in 1990 to Rancho Viejo, in the Rio Grande Valley near Brownsville. Bonnie loved to travel and had seen most, if not all, of the world. She was a patron of the arts and a long standing supporter of Columbus theater. Mrs. Barbara Larson Kiker, age 85, of 108 Woodcrest Court in Americus, Ga., died Friday, July 6, 2007, at Magnolia Manor Nursing Home. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 7, 2007, from the graveside at Oak Grove Cemetery. The Rev. Hugh DeLoach and the Rev. Brian Myers officiated. The family received friends at the home. Mrs. Kiker was born May 14, 1922, in Monticello, Mo. She was the daughter of the late Albin Lawrence Larson and the late Jenny Cooley Larson. She was a floral designer for many years and was a former member of Glenwood Baptist Church in Oak Ridge, Tenn., where she served as Sunday School teacher and superintendent, WMU president, and circle leader. After retiring in 1982, she and her husband moved to Americus, Ga., and joined Central Baptist Church. Survivors include one daughter, Gay Kiker Smith of Americus, Ga.; one son, Jack Kiker of San Francisco, Calif.; a granddaughter, Leslie Smith Reese and husband, Dean, of Leesburg; one sister, Glenice Larson Terry of Americus; a niece, Carol Kiker Townsend of Americus; and two great-grandchildren, Braden and Carley Reese of Leesburg. Also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ned Jackson Kiker Sr. in 1983. Melton, age 77, a resident of Oliver Springs, passed away Saturday, July 7, 2007, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Mr. Melton served his country in the U.S. Army in the 101st Cavalry during the Korean War. During his career, Mr. Melton had worked as a photographer for the Atomic Energy Commission, as a photographer for the ski lodge in Gatlinburg, and as a manager with Service Merchandise in the camera department. He retired from the McCrory Co. after serving as store manager in Jellico, Tenn.; Bluefield, W. Va.; and Boone and Greensboro, N.C. After his retirement he worked part time in the photo lab at the Oak Ridge Wal-Mart. His parents, Roy and Elizabeth Melton of Powell, preceded him in death. Mr. Melton is survived by his wife of 27 years, Becky. Other survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Bud Cannon of Powell; a stepdaughter and her husband, Donetta and John Harvey of Oliver Springs; granddaughters, Rebecca and Katie Harvey of Oliver Springs, who were the apple of his eye; sisters-in-law, Betty Price and Punkin Raby of Oliver Springs; nieces and nephews, Sherry Cannon of Powell, Chris and Corey Raby of Oliver Springs, and Jeff and Jeniffer Rowe of Franklin. His brothers-in-law, Bobby Price and Eddie Raby of Oliver Springs, were his golf and fishing buddies. He was born on Sept. 29, 1934, in Oconto, Wis., and was raised in Ontonagon, Mich. He was the son of the late Francis C. and Ilse E. (Schluenz) Pigeon. Robert served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1956. He took academic degrees at Gogebic Community College, Ironwood, Mich.; Stephen F. Austin University, Nacogdoches, Texas; and Texas A & M University, College Station, Texas. He joined the Atomic Energy Commission in August 1961 and worked with the Technical Information Group in Washington, D.C., and then OSTI in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Afte r retiring in May 1982, he worked as a consulting nuclear licensing engineer at several nuclear stations in Arizona, Missouri, New York, Illinois, Tennessee and South Carolina. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Clinton, the Pellissippi Genealogical and Historical Society and the National Rifle Association. He is survived by Peggy, his wife of 24 years; by daughters, Elizabeth M. Morgan and husband, Darren, of Walkersville, Md., Shannon B. He was born Dec. 29, 1932, in Middletown, Ohio, the son of James Robert Weir Sr., and Kathleen Lawson Weir. He is survived by five sons, James Robert III, David Jeffrey, Joseph Todd, Patrick Allen and Scott Anthony, who love and miss him. He is also survived by two sisters, Judy Weir Goode and Kathy Weir Dickey. Mr. Weir worked at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory for 39 years until his retirement in 1994. The last 20 years, he served as associate director and director of the Metals and Ceramics Division. During his tenure, he was the recipient of the E. O. Lawrence Award. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1955 in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati and his master's from the University of Tennessee in 1962. Mr. Weir was an avid sailor for 40-plus years. He was a member and past Commodore of the Concord Yacht Club and successfully competed in numerous regattas in many classes of boats throughout the southeast region. He was also instrumental in the early development of the sailing education programs at the Club. Mr. Weir enjoyed acting with the Oak Ridge Community Playhouse and he was an avid singer with barbershop quartets in younger years. In keeping with Mr. Weir's wishes, he was cremated. Sheila was born Jan. 22, 1960, in Asheville, North Carolina. She moved to Oliver Springs in 1978. She was a energetic lady who lived life to its fullest. Her hobbies included shopping, shopping, and shopping. She worked as a customer service agent for Whirlpool Inc. In addition, she also was employed as a teacher's assistant at the Norwood school. Many of her customers became life-long friends. Vivian was a master seamstress and loved to crochet items for all her family and friends. One of her favorite things to do was shop with her daughters. He was probably best known for being named All-American when he graduated from Oak Ridge High School in 1952. He was an outstanding full-back. He went on to play at Auburn and Memphis State. No matter where Jim lived or worked he considered Tennessee home and was a true Tennessee fan. He retired from Union Carbide after 35 years of service. Jim was also an entrepreneur. He started up several area businesses over the years. He was an avid sports enthusiast and really enjoyed playing golf and fishing. Jim also loved traveling to Arizona where his daughters and grandchildren lived. He was preceded in death by his father, Carl Shelton; his step-father, Kirby Duke; his mother, Eleanor Duke; and his brother, Tom Shelton. Survivors include his eldest daughter, Jamia Jenkins, and fiance, Scott Renshaw, and granddaughter, Kendall Lowery of Arizona; grandson, Desmond Holt of Florida; youngest daughter, Leslie Webb, and son-in-law, Scott Webb, and grandsons, Garrett and Delaney Harbin of Arizona. Eubank, age 73, of Newport, Tenn., passed away Monday evening, June 25, 2007, at Baptist Hospital of Cocke County. He was a descendant of Frederick and James Swagerty of Cocke County, ancestral members of the first families of Tennessee. George came to Oak Ridge in 1945 with his parents and family. He attended the Oak Ridge Schools, and graduated in 1951 at the newly completed Oak Ridge High School. George was a member of the ORHS "Wildcat" Band. He played trumpet in a local dance band known as the Rhythm-aires. He was a member of the ORHS National Honor Society. He was a member of the ORHS Track Team, competing in the pole vaulting events. George graduated in 1955 from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was a member of the UT Pride of the Southland Band. During his junior year, George was president of his Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. Completing the ROTC course at UT, upon graduation he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant and served with the Army Corps of Engineers, stationed at New Rouchelle, France. He was married in 1955 to Miss Beatrice Schilz of Arlington, Va. George worked for Boeing Aircraft in Seattle, Wash., during the late 1950s and early 1960s. From the mid-1960s until his retirement in the 1990s, George was with the Forenta Corporation, and its subsidiary Norco, Inc. located in Morristown, Tenn. During his time with Forenta, he was a member of the Toastmasters Association. He was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey Arleigh Eubank; parents, William Arleigh and Bonnie K. Eubank; and brother, William Mims Eubank. Powell, age 84, of Clinton and a member of the Clinton Church of God, passed away Monday, July 2, 2007, at Windwood Health Care Center. She was born Sept. 10, 1922, in Owensboro, Ky., and was the daughter of the late Augustine and Minnie Nugent Powell. During Dorothy's life she won first place at the Kentucky State Track Championship in 1935 and her award was a free trip to the White House where she met the 32nd President, Franklin D. Roosevelt. Dorothy was a veteran of the U.S. Navy for five years and spent two years working for the Southern Pacific Railroad in Portland, Ore. She was a lifetime member of the Radio CB Club in Hawaii and Alaska. She also enjoyed motorcycle riding and hunting. In 1978, she became a chartered member of the McGhee Tyson Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol and transferred to the Oak Ridge Squadron in 1988. One of her last accomplishments in life was she attained the rank of Lt. Col. in the Civil Air Patrol in 1992. Dorothy was preceded in death by a sister, Sylvia Champion. Survivors include her special friends, Susan and Kenny Byrd of Clinton, Lt. Col. Rick Grindstaff, CAP of Knoxville; and a host of other cousins and friends. Byrne, Sr. and Esther Neeley Byrne, of Gainesboro, both deceased, and the brother of Ann Byrne Rosson, of Knoxville, deceased, and Betsy Byrne Laude, of Boise, Idaho. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jean White Byrne of Maryville; and by daughters Laurie Byrne of Maryville, and Terry Byrne of Rochester, NY. He never strayed far from his Irish ancestry and rural Jackson County roots. Arthur met Jean at Maryville College where he received a bachelor's degree in 1939. He then completed a J.D. degree from The University of Tennessee College of Law and practiced law in Knoxville until retiring in 1999. He was a long-time member of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, the American College of Trial Lawyers, the Federation of Insurance Counsel and the Tennessee Bar Association. He served as president of the Knoxville Bar Association from 196 3-1964. The association presented him with the "Governor's Award" in 1994. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1943-1946 where he earned the rank of Captain; he was decorated for his service in the Pacific. He was a Knoxville Symphony Orchestra board member from the early 1960s to the late 1980s and served as President from 1974-1975. Art read everywhere and everything - from Civil War history and biography to Dickens and Zane Gray. He enjoyed cartooning, woodworking, drawing and painting, stained glass artistry, old movies, traveling, finding bargains and mending things that anyone else would toss and replace. He was a Lady Vol season ticket holder throughout Pat Summit's reign and he thrilled with each national championship win. At tense moments during a game's broadcast, he could often be found cleaning the garage. He was a devoted, compassionate, loving husband and a patient, generous, supportive father. His departure creates an irreplaceable void in the lives of those who respected and cherished him. He leaves in his wake a family and friends blessed by his quiet presence, humor, unwavering acceptance, humility, empathy, and fairness. A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 2nd at 3:00 PM in the sanctuary of Magnolia Avenue United Methodist Church in Knoxville. EDWARD - age 87, joined the Church Triumphant on June 26, 2007 at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center. Judge Cole was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church for over 50 years. He was born in Knoxville, Tennessee on May 14, 1920, and attended Knoxville High School and graduated from Central High School in 1938. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and saw action in five major campaigns in the Pacific. Judge Cole graduated first in his class at the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1948 and was recalled to active military duty in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General Corps during the Korean War as well as serving in the Pentagon. He retired at the rank of Major in the United States Army Reserve. Judge Cole was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States in 1953 and he resumed his private practice of law in Knoxville, TN later that year. He was appointed Judge, Knox County Circuit Court, Division II in 1961 and was elected without opposition to serve as Knox County Circuit Court Judge in four General Elections spanning three decades. He retired as Judge, Knox County Circuit Court in January 1987 after serving over twenty-five years in office. Judge Cole was the President of the Tennessee Judicial Conference from 1971 to 1972 and served in the formation of the International Academy of Trial Judges and as seventh President of the International Academy of Trial Judges. He was a member of the Tennessee Society, Sons of the Revolution and the East Tennessee Historical Society First Families of Tennessee. As a youth, Johnnie often biked from Alcoa to Gatlinburg with weights on his bicycle. He was beloved by his family and many friends. He will be missed. LaFollette Press June 28, 2007 Howard Lee Vandergriff, Sr., age 80 of Oak Ridge formerly of Jacksboro passed away June 24 at the NHC in Oak Ridge. He was a member of Midway Baptist Church and of the Oak Ridge Masonic Lodge # 756 F & AM. He enjoyed gardening, roses, and cooking. He was a Veteran of World War II having won several metals and ribbons. He was preceded in death by his mother, Georgia Vandergriff; father, Burley Vandergriff. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Anna Lou Vandergriff; daughter and son in law, Beverly and James Abele of Oak Ridge; son, Howard (Buck) Vandergriff, Jr. of Jacksboro; son, Paul Vandergriff of Oak Ridge; brother, Johnie (Buddy) Vandergriff of Harrogate; sisters, Katie Vandergriff and Katherine Bolinger both of Jacksboro, Betty Matlock of Seminole, FL, grandson, Brandon Abele of Oak Ridge; a host of relatives and friends. Funeral and Masonic services were held June 26 at the Midway Baptist Church with the Rev. Johnny Dabney officiating and Faith Masonic Lodge #756 F& AM of Oak Ridge in charge of Masonic Services. Bridges White, age 91 of Lawrenceville, GA (formerly of LaFollette and Toledo, OH) passed away June 24 in Lawrenceville, GA where she had resided for the past 7½ years. She was born Jan.y 9, 1916 in LaFollette to William R. and Cora J. (Wilson) Paul. She was employed by the Gladieux Food Corporation retiring in 1981 and was a member of the Cass Road Baptist Church. She was prec eded in death by her parents; husbands, Bennett Bridges and Eugene White; daughter, Della; brothers, William E., James R., and George I. Paul; sisters, Elsie Goins, Edith Sweat and Lois Wilson; grandson, Kenneth Bridges. She is survived by her son, Tommy Bridges, Sr. and wife, Donna of Swanton, OH; daughters, Elizabeth Michalak and husband, John of Lawrenceville, GA; sisters, Della Summers, Josie McNeeley and Ann Wilson all of LaFollette; grandchildren, Tommy Bridges, Jr. and wife, Rita, David Bridges and wife, Niki, William Bridges and wife, Chrissy, Eliza Lorentz and husband, Robert, Laura Adams and husband, Michael; step-grandchildren, Vickie and Peggy Annesser; 16 great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was born Nov. 11, 1919 at Whistle Creek, TN. He was a U.S. Navy World War II Veteran; retired from Southern Railroad after 41 years of service; a member of American Legion and VFW and a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rita Marie Lay Zecchini and granddaughter, Kate Zecchini. He is survived by his children, Mike Zecchini wife, Lou, of Huber Heights, OH, Frank Zecchini wife, Marcia, of Centerville, OH, Tim Zecchini wife, Jan, of Jellico, Debbie Williams husband, Jeff, of Louisville, TN; grandchildren, Jill Zecchini , Michael Zecchini wife, Julie, of Fairborn, OH, Tim Zecchini wife, Sarah, of Kettering, OH, Andrew Zecchini of Dayton, OH, Aaron Zecchini and Amy Zecchini, of Jellico, TN, Laura Williams and Stephanie Williams of Louisville, TN; great-grandchildren, A.J.
