WILDA JANE UNDERWOOD - age 79 of Sunbright, went home to be with her Lord on September 27, 2007, at the Lifecare Center of Morgan County, where she had been a patient since April of 2002. She was a member of Annadell Baptist Church, where she played the piano and organ for many years. She was a graduate of Sunbright High School and Draughn's Business College and retired from Highland Telephone Company after thirty years as a billing clerk. She was preceded in death by parents, Mary Ella Jeffers Underwood and William Estel Underwood, Sr. of Pilot Mountain; and devoted husband of 55 years, John William York; sister, Wanda Underwood; brother, Leslie Underwood of Sunbright; nephew, Charles Underwood, of Lancing; and nephew, Bradley Wayne Underwood of Coalfield and Knoxville. Mrs. York is survived by brother, Estel (Bud) Underwood and wife, Sandy of Coalfield; niece, Sherri and husband Lee Turpin and their children, Luke and Emmie of Knoxville; nephew, Chris Whaley and wife Cindy and children, Jonathan and Tori of Harriman; niece, Sondra and husband Perry Spurling and son, Aaron of Lancing; sister-in-law, Ailene Underwood of Lancing; brothers-in-law, Roscoe York and wife Irene and Truman York and their families, all of Albany, KY; great-niece and great-nephew, Kim Kennedy and Chris Underwood of Lancing; and many other special nieces, nephews, and friends. The family will receive friends Saturday, September 29, 2007 from 6 to 8 P.M. at Annadell Baptist Church, in Lancing. Funeral services will follow at 8:00 p.m. with Rev. Bill Goodman and Rev. Gene grew up in Kansas City, Kansas and worked as an electrician for many years. In his thirties, he felt the call of God to serve and returned to school. He graduated Hope College in Michigan (1966) and Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, VA, (1969). He became a member of the Presbytery and served as pastor of several churches in Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky, before serving for four years as a missionary in Zaire, Africa with his wife Peggy. They later served in the mission field in Haiti as well. Gene was honorably retired from the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and with his wife, Peggy, became active members in the community of the Powell Presbyterian Church for many happy years. SIMPSON, JOE HUGHLIN - age 85 of Charleston, TN, passed away on Wednesday, September 26, 2007 at his residence with his family by his side. Mr. Simpson, a lifelong resident of Bradley County, was of the Methodist faith and a member of the Masonic Lodge of Cleveland. He served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II, serving from June 1942 until March 1946. His tour of duty included both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. In 1948, Mr. Simpson, along with his father and brothers, began Simpson Construction Company. The firm, which specialized in bridge construction, built many highway and railroad bridges in Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee. During his career with Simpson Construction, he was also an owner of Ross Prestressed in Knoxville, TN and Cleveland Ready Mix. In 1986, Mr. Simpson left Simpson Construction Company and began Highland Construction Company which was also a bridge construction company. Mr. Simpson retired from Highland in 1990. Additionally,! Mr. Simpson was the owner of Outback Farms of Tennessee and Georgia which specialized in registered Black Angus cattle. He enjoyed big game hunting, bird hunting and fishing. He especially enjoyed his elk hunting trips to Idaho. He was preceded in death by: his wife, Josephine Morelan Simpson in 1990 and by his wife, Alice Lowe Simpson in 2003. Born Eleni Kleto in Karpenesie, Greece on April 27, 1913. She immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island one year later and spent much of her early life in Bowling Green, Kentucky. She met and married Steve Pappas in Bowling Green, in 1932. In 1942, Sam, their first and only child was born in Knoxville, Tennessee. She spent the remainder of her life in Knoxville, where she was a founding member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church, and a charter member of the ladies Philoptahos society, which she served faithfully and diligently for over sixty years. She was awarded the Archangel Michael award by the Archdioceses in 2004 for a lifetime of outstanding and dedicated service to the Orthodox Church. She leaves her son Dr. Sam G. TATE, EDITH WELLS - passed away unexpectedly early Sunday September 23, 2007. She was born in Crystal Springs, MS on October 26, 1919. She moved to Knoxville in the early 1940's to start a job with TVA, where, on a blind date met Naval Lt. Cmdr., and attorney, Oscar Tate, and they were married soon after. They lived in Miami and San Francisco before retuning to Knoxville at the end of the war. Edith graduated from Ole Miss University, was a member of Chi Omega Sorority, and remained an avid fan of the Rebels. Edith was a part-time fashion model often seen in local publications. Oscar and Edith were avid sports enthusiasts and the entire family rode horses. Following Oscar's death, Edith joined the staff of Congressman John Duncan in the late 1960's where she remained for multiple terms before becoming the regional administrator for Senator Bill Brock in a joint office shared with Senator Howard Baker. She retired as a government employee from Oak Ridge National Labs at 65 an! d enjoyed her retirement to the fullest. She was extremely interested in history, politics and environmental affairs and never hesitated to express her opinion. In her spare time she volunteered for the Knoxville Chapter of the American Red Cross and was recently recognized for more than 30 years of service. Always a devoted golfer, she could be found playing up to 18 holes, 3 or 4 times a week at Cherokee Country Club, where over the years she was awarded numerous trophies. Active until her very last day, she was an enthusiastic lover of life and asked the attending ER physician "if this will take long because I have a 9:40 a.m. Tee-time". She will be missed by many. UNGER, ROBERT F. - President of Chalet Ice Rinks, Inc. and primary shareholder of the Ice Chalet in Bearden, passed away early Sunday morning, September 23, 2007 at the age of 82. A native of Nuremberg, Germany, he was a highly acclaimed skater who won titles in ice and roller skating championships in Europe. Among his many achievements as a professional coach, Mr. Unger taught two German skating champions and a Ladies World Champion (1954). He was a featured performer in worldwide productions of Holiday On Ice and in European ice shows for 18 years before deciding to make his home in Knoxville in 1963. Under his management and eventual ownership, the Ice Chalet of Knoxville became a successful enterprise that has stood the test of time. More than four decades later, the Ice Chalet continues to offer a comprehensive skating program for figure skaters, hockey skaters, and the recreational skating community. He established skating schools in Knoxville and in Huntsville, Alabam! a. He was a leader in the development of the Ice Skating Institute, the international group that promotes recreational figure skating and hockey. He pioneered recreational skating competitions by initiating the annual Mississippi Valley District Invitational Team Competition in Knoxville in 1969. In 1977, this competition became the first international ISI skating competition. The 38th Annual MVDC was held in Knoxville in March of 2007. Mr. Unger earned his Masters Degree as a Figure, Freestyle, and Group Instructor, as well as Administrator, from the Professional Skaters Guild of America (PSGA). Twice named "Man of the Year" by the Ice Skating Institute, Mr. Unger was elected to membership in the Ice Skating Hall of Fame in 1983 for his contributions to the sport, and in the year 2000 he was presented with the Ice Skating Institute's Lifetime Achievement Award. As remarkable as his many achievements were, he will be remembered by generations of Ice Chalet skaters and their! families as a respected and beloved teacher, mentor, and frie! nd. MURPH, GERALDINE LIVESAY - of Morristown, passed away on Friday, September 21, 2007 a devout Christian serenaded by angels into her heavenly home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ throughout eternity who she faithfully served. She lost her battle with cancer after 40 months of non-complaining. She was the devoted wife of Lewis T. Murph, loving mother of Teresa Murph-Smith, whom she adored and son-in-law, Chuck Smith who she cared for as a son. She was a member of Buffalo Trail Baptist Church where she served as pianist faithfully for 25 years and presently attended First Baptist Church of Morristown for 25 years. She was a member of The Order of Eastern Star Morristown Chapter 31 and retired from the Hamblen County School System. She was preceded in death by: loving parents, Lon and Mae Livesay; brothers, J.T. and Glen Livesay.
