    1. [TNMORGAN] Helicopter Crash

    3. Clinton Courier July 17, 1986 Helicopter Crash Kills Inspectors Three of four mine inspectors who were killed last Thursday after they were dispatched on a tour of area strip mines were buried Tuesday. Funeral arrangements for the fourth man killed in the crash of a helicopter on Birf Mountain in Morgan County near Frozen Head State Park were incomplete.Bryan Calder, an Australian, the pilot of the aircraft belived to have slammed in the mountain near Ross Gap by a sudden thunderstorm, had been living in Washington and Oregon and had only been working in this area for a few months. The other fatalities were Danny J. Reed, 39, of Knoxville, Jerry D. Irwin, 42, of Lafollette and James Charles Byrd, 26, of Knoxville. The four Office of Surface Mining employes who work out of the department's facilities in Norris apparently were killed instantly. The scattered wreckage of the chopper was found by OSM searches during the midafternoon Saturday. The helicopter failed to report back Thursday after a tour of suspected "wildcat" strip mines. Family members, friends and co-workers hoped the helicopter had been forced down safely and the four men were trying to walk out of the rugged back country. However, the OSM team, a handful among the hundreds of emergency workers and volunteers who scoured the mountainous terrain those two days, acted on a tip from some residents of Bird Mountain who said they heard a helicopter's motor, a sound like a clap of thunder and then silence. The deris was not visible from the air, the ground searches discovered.
