I think the cornerstone has the date 1898? on it; and it has been duplicated with some modern modifications in two adjacent attached buildings that all together constitute the "Customs House Museum" that was established by the late Ursula Smith Beach, then county historian and others. ----- Original Message ----- From: "bzbee" <bzbee@bellsouth.net> To: <TNMONTGO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, July 15, 2003 7:29 PM Subject: [TNMONTGO-L] ? about post office > I would like to know if the post office from the 1800s( and then the > electric company) is still at the corner of Commerce and 2nd St. It had > eagles on each corner and a cupola on top, with lots of terra cotta work > on it. Thanks, Cleo. I was wondering if it was destroyed in the tornado several years ago. Couldn't find the photos of the damage that were on this site. Thanks again. J....... I recall from a visit to Clarksville many year ago there were plans to build a museum at or in the vicinity of the train depot. This interested me as my grandfather worked for the RR. Was it ever built? If I remember correctly the train depot was on or near Commerce St. Jo jo.kester@comcast.net > I think the cornerstone has the date 1898? on it; and it has been duplicated > with some modern modifications in two adjacent attached buildings that all > together constitute the "Customs House Museum" that was established by the > late Ursula Smith Beach, then county historian and others. > > > From: "bzbee" <bzbee@bellsouth.net> > To: <TNMONTGO-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Tuesday, July 15, 2003 7:29 PM > Subject: [TNMONTGO-L] ? about post office > > > > I would like to know if the post office from the 1800s( and then the > > electric company) is still at the corner of Commerce and 2nd St. It had > > eagles on each corner and a cupola on top, with lots of terra cotta work > > on it.
