My ggrandmother's brother was deputy sheriff ( listed in 1900 & 1910 census) of Montgomery ( we were always told Sheriff) Beyond these listings though there is nothing. Is there anyway of locating him and his family through his career. Before and after these two census dates there is nothing? Which suggests to me they moved, but where is undeterminable as yet. The census lists him, his children and his sister (my ggrandmother). Surely at some point he was listed at deputy sheriff in the county or the local new papers (of which I know none of) or something. I only have this clue to locate my ggrandmothers parents. Any suggestions for locating him would be greatfully appreciated. I am at a loss for this branch of my family. 1900 Montgomery Co Census Page 284 Black, Robert 1864 36 TN Deputy Sheriff Montgomery Co. 1900-? 3. Marcia, This is Robert Black in 1880 census. ---- At least the birth year and place is right. He later has a son named Herman, so the H.B. may stand for Herman. H. B. 3. Marcia, I believe that this is Robert Black below. I believe that this is his second marriage, because in a later census Margaret is shown as 23, and they have a 9-year-old. She was probably too young for this to be her child. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Husband Robert Lee Black Pedigree Birth: 23 DEC 1864 , Montgomery, Tennessee Christening: Marriage: 1897 Of, , Montgomery, Tennessee Death: 06 APR 1950 Burial: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wife C. 3. I also found Robt in the 1880 census. (District 17, Montgomery County, page 433, ED 142) I believe the wife's name is Gildar, not Tildar. On the same page is Martha Black (24, widow) with son Burnell (9) and daughter Nancy (5). Maybe Martha is a sister of H.B.? In district 17, other Blacks are: Bettie (32), Daniel (5), Fanney (1), Jacob (18), James (16), Lucy (10), M.B. (64), Mary (53), Sam (12), and William (10). Also, in the 1870 census of Montgomery County (District 20, page 491), there is a Robert Black (3, b TN) is living with Rena Black (19) and George Ann (1). They live next door to Thomas Baggett's family, which is next door to Jesse Baggett's family. There are also several other Baggett's on the previous page, and one on the next page. These are the only Blacks in District 20. It is likely this is the same Robert Black, and his age is more likely 1866 since dates in later censuses were given by more distant relatives. In the 1880 census, there is a M. E. Harvey (14, female) in District 18 (page 452A, ED 143), living in the household of G. H. Harvey (34) living next door to N.M.(?) Harvey, who lives next door to A. Bagget's family. Gerry Gerry
