    2. William, According to Shelby Foote......... <Dec 1860 Maj Robert Anderson had 82 men at Fort Moultrie on Sullivan Island. 26 Dec 1860 Anderson moved his men to Fort Sumpter (a stronger fort) with six weeks supply of rations. SC demanded they move back to the first fort. An unarmed merchant ship was fired on trying to deliver supplies to Anderson. "Star of the West". SC blockades Fort Sumpter from supplies. Anderson's orders were to `hold the fort'. He did and when he had 3 days supplies (food) left Beauregard started firing on the fort. He had orders to `reduce the fort' and he did. All Charleston turned out and watched three days......when Anderson's condition's of honor were satisfied he yielded........When Anderson's men pasted out of the harbor, the Confederate soldiers removed their caps. There was no cheering. jerree
