    3. Hi William, I'm not a Southerner, but I think the War had something to do with the Northerners stomping on the old home grounds. Now that would make me mad too. There are so many reasons and as a newcomer to genealogy and the Civil War I still haven't figured it out and probably never will. It was a threat to a way of life that had worked for many people for decades. It was politics, ie. who and which states had the most leverage in the Senate and Congress depending on which states were "free" and which were not. Most people think it was over slavery, but I think that was just a small slice of the cannon ball. The Emancipation Proclamation was a squeeze to get the Europeans on the side of the Northern US. Anyone else with ideas out there I would love to hear and learn.
