    2. William, I live in a family of guys your age (five in all born from 1949 to 1961) and I am used to health discussions, they make the juices flow.... you are just a little thinner skinned than most....the Civil War was not your fault.....the way people in the south talk is not your fault..... you don't have to defend them......it is all a good discussion and I for one have learned a lot from it. Anyway the list isn't so quiet any more. You need not apologize to anyone and I am sure Jan will not `send you to your room'. You have brought up some very good questions.... I am not so sure they have all been answered but they are `food for thought'. jerree PS I was going through the 1860 & 1870 census yesterday for Stewart-TN and there are oodles of Pulley's.......

    3. Yes, West Nile Virus was ruled out. Viral Encephalitis has been discussed but not confirmed. The CDC and some 'elite team of professionals' haven't determined the cause of this 'virus'. (A friend, a critical care RN, told me that this 'elite team' was probably a team of specialists from Virginia---government doctors.) One report said that the family planned to be at the hospital this afternoon and all mechanical assistance will end at 5:00. I haven't actually confirmed this information and it came 2nd/3rd hand but I have no reason to doubt it. I feel like there will be an autopsy and maybe we will be told the cause--where this 'virus' came from. Sandy

    2. The Declaration covers the Rev War.......after secession....Lincoln obviously had no control over the south so it could not be in forced down there any way so it was just a piece of paper......after the war the southerner had to retake the oath of Allegiance to the Constitution. jerree

    2. William, If you are a military man, you have a job to do, and you do it. If you are not willing to do that then you break the oath. That is my only problem understanding the Civil War....that they broke their oath.........a man/woman's honor is their word. That honor/oath haunted many southern military leaders till their death.

    2. William, According to Shelby Foote......... <Dec 1860 Maj Robert Anderson had 82 men at Fort Moultrie on Sullivan Island. 26 Dec 1860 Anderson moved his men to Fort Sumpter (a stronger fort) with six weeks supply of rations. SC demanded they move back to the first fort. An unarmed merchant ship was fired on trying to deliver supplies to Anderson. "Star of the West". SC blockades Fort Sumpter from supplies. Anderson's orders were to `hold the fort'. He did and when he had 3 days supplies (food) left Beauregard started firing on the fort. He had orders to `reduce the fort' and he did. All Charleston turned out and watched three days......when Anderson's condition's of honor were satisfied he yielded........When Anderson's men pasted out of the harbor, the Confederate soldiers removed their caps. There was no cheering. jerree

    3. Well, I can jump in here and agree with the statement that most of the Confederates did not own slaves....I come from a long line of Tennessee and Kentucky families and none of them owned slaves at the time of the war...My one ancestor who had any dealings with slaves, lived in the area of Murfreesboro in 1780-94..I have records showing he bartered and sold, slaves and horses, to Andrew Jackson... My understanding is that the war was fought over state's rights...The Yankees(Republicans) were for big central governnemt and the Southerners(Democrats) were for minimum Federal interference and more state government...The Emancipation Proclaimation was only effective in the states that had seceded from the Union. Other states that had slaves had to do their own proclaimation after the War was over... To my mind, a true southerner is one who can be proud his ancestors stood up for what they believed, but also be proud of the United States we have now.... >OK, so who/what is a true southerner? > > >My vote for the cause of the Civil War is states' rights. > Regarding slavery:Actually, very few of the total number of southerners >owned slaves and most of the men who fought for the South were not slave >holders. >Barbara > _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx

    2. I know this isn't genealogy, but I can't resist. It is all William's fault. Quoting from one of his responses. "The reason I wanted to know, was that I have some IA kinfolk. They had lived in TX for awhile and they told me the Texans were still fighting the war. " Several years ago I had an elderly friend who went to school in Texas. He seriously assured me that until he grew up and left Texas he never knew the South lost the Civil War. The school year always ended before they got to that part of the history book. (I didn't believe him, but I thought it a cute story.) Barb

    3. I was thinking along the same lines as Mary but didn't they rule out West Nile Virus already? Have any of the doctors mentioned 'encephalitis'? I'm not a doctor and heaven knows I have no medical training but I was listening to something on the radio the other day and the symptoms are very similar. Wow! It appears we have more to worry about from little bloodsucking creatures than we do from terrorist. Karen

I have been a little snotty in my answers. I cannot help myself. TN is a place that I love. As it was a part of the CSA, I love the CSA by extension. I don't like people making fun of the language, culture, weather, etc. If one does not like these things, that is ok but don't don't run it down. With being said, I apologize for earlier e mails. Seems like I do that alot. I sure hope Jan doesn't ask me to leave. William
