    1. [TNMONTGO-L] War Between the States--Tennessee
    2. Sandra Ellis
    3. Okay, these lists are based of TENNESSEE counties so information discussed should pertain to this State. #1--Tennessee originally voted by near 4-to-1 margin NOT to secede from the Union! #2--When Lincoln ordered States to send 75,000 men to support the Union's cause, TN took a second vote. When our citizens realized they would be forced to fight family and friends, the second vote was to secede. "Then on April 12, 1861, Ft. Sumter was attacked and three days later President Lincoln issued a proclamation calling on the state governors to send 75,000 state militia to force the seceded states back under the authority of the Union. This angered and saddened many Tennessee Citizens. Realizing they would have to fight and refusing to fight against their southern neighbors, they voted on June 8, 1861, in favor of secession. The majority had changed from four to one against and was now two to one for secession." ( http://www.geocities.com/bedfordcounty/civilwar/text.html ) You might be interested in http://www.state.tn.us/environment/hist/PathDivided/prologue.htm My people, if not my ancesters, were forced into a war they didn't want! Was this not "Northern Agression"? The Emancipation Proclaimation is found at http://www.nps.gov/ncro/anti/emancipation.html Lincoln named the former states this proclaimation affected, former states that were "in rebellion against the United States". Why isn't Tennessee named among those former states "in rebellion"? Why didn't this proclaimation include the United States? How could Lincoln issue a proclaimation affecting 'some' of the states that had withdrawn from the Union and had formed their own government? Convince me there was no "politics" involved here! I believe it was Cleo that said something about not being taught certain things about this war while he was in school. I graduated CHS in 1967 and I don't remember being taught such facts as Lincoln did NOT "free the slaves"! I checked my granddaughter's 6th grade history book last year (she hasn't brought one home this year). Guess what? She's still being taught that Lincoln freed the slaves! If we, our children, and our grandchildren are not taught the facts, we are being fed propaganda! Most of us attended government-operated schools so who is feeding this propaganda and why? (Does this "Northern Agression" continue? Study the "Davis-Bacon Act" to learn what happened when a black contractor won a contract in a northern state!) Personally, I believe in 'equality'---and I don't care about race, sex, religion, etc.! Sandy Ellis

    3. Duped into it? Ya reckon? Actually, being both the descendent of about three Confederate soldiers, and one Union one...I am going to throw in another idea here...many folks of this particular area were not duped into the war...they were poor farmers who were pulled in, their buildings, churches, schools, homes were being burnt, their crops destroyed, their livestock left to rot dead in the fields (what was not being pillaged to feed soldiers and drifters instead of families). Many were beaten and even tortured (many accounts of this in Stewart Co. history), civilians murdered, women raped, children left orphans (and not saying it was all legit soldiers, done by many renegades who had taken off awol intent on destruction)... At any rate, in that case ....southern, northern, or pink and purple polka dot, a man is going to fight. jan >I think most of the southern people were duped into it for what ever reasons >(I hate to even think about that) their elected representatives had in mind. > >The end justifies the means.......in my opinion...... > >jerree

    1. Re: [TNMONTGO-L] question for true southerners
    2. William, I am not sure what the question is but.... When that many men on both sides IN UNIFORM and out of uniform plus women and child, black and white and all those poor horses were dead, you can call it what you want but to me it is a war, not a rebellion and not a recent unpleasantness.......body shrouds are now called body bags.....dead is dead..... I think most of the southern people were duped into it for what ever reasons (I hate to even think about that) their elected representatives had in mind. The end justifies the means.......in my opinion...... jerree

You can't have it both ways. Was it a war or was it an action against criminals who were rebelling against their country? Pick one. If not war, then it is 'acquiring' done by the US government from their own countryman. They are good for that. The victor gets to make the defintions. William

    3. Okay, here I go again. I may be asking for help in getting my foot out of my mouth but.......... In the case of the "great unpleasantness" as it was called by those not on the front lines and also ignoring the elephant in the front room, my "opinion" is that it wasn't begun by the "people" "citizens" of either North or South, but by those who had something to lose if New Mexico, Texas, CA etc. were to be free or slave states, namely, their jobs, egos and power. I haven't studied the specific "yes we want it", "no you can't have it" causes, but didn't the split begin to loom in 1850, or earlier? Isn't that when the Missouri Compromise came into being?? It resulted in a stalemate for ten years, with nothing really definitely resolved. When the War was begun, by both sides, at about the same time, perhaps not with the same intensity, but definitely with the same intent, the North was at Fort Sumter and Lincoln wasn't about to retreat. That's called pushing it to the edge. Some folks in the South got together and said, "Look we aren't gonna take this any more", and thus the shot/s that almost broke the back of the Nation. Isn't it interesting that we as a people elect the wo/men to power and then step back and let them take over? How does that happen?? How does anyone know what the truth really is when one is told something by a politician?? What a stew!!!!!! I don't think the Civil War was my Great Grandpa's, or my Great Uncle's idea. But to protect the homeland from those vicious people from the North and South, they fought. They just forgot they were part of that North and South. Let's think of what could have been done instead of the War. What compromises could have been done?? Any suggestions?? And please don't say the Damn Yankees could have stayed home even if it's true. 2. Elaine, You are correct....Traveller did die of of `lockjaw' from a nail in his front hoof. I didn't know horses could get it. Correction......me not you........Lee's mare was Lucy Long (NOT Lucy Lee) lived to be 34 years old.... Lucy Lee was a mare my folks had when I was little....she was cut between her from legs by a wire (a deep wound) and it was my job to keep that wound clean and take her out every day for a very, very slow walk to get her exercise. Took months to heal.....I remember having that purple medicine all over me. `Tincture of violet' I believe it was called and it would not wash off, it had to wear off. Memories......... jerree
