My great great grandparents married in Montogmery Co. about 1828. I was told years ago that the tornado of 1837 had destroyed all records along with the courthouse. Is this correct? Pam
Sandy, Thanks for the info....seems my `Handy Book' was written pre-tornado and I wrote to old addresses. Since the people I am looking for were pre 1833, I am not much interested in the history of the place after that....... Since all of my research is done from home....microfilms are of little use to me and I can't afford a CD that may/may not have one deed on it that I can use. Where would one write for copies of: Wills & Administrations Deeds I have all the book numbers and pages......... Thanks again for your help! jerree
William- I would appreciate it if you would limit your comments to the Montgomery County Mail List to history or genealogy. Please send massages like the one below privately. Thank you for your cooperation. Hi Katharan, I would like to take you up on your offer to do look ups. I have many brick walls in all of my lineages. All due to Cherokee & Choctaw blood. My ancestors didn't trust the US government, so they avoided any records of any kind and paid cash for everything. I need to place the following people SOMEWHERE in 1880. Sanford SUGG/SUGGS, b. 1846-48 Lawr. Co. AL. most likely a widower by 1880, but his wife was Cynthie Permillis [Mellie} They were in Itawamba Co. MS. but possibly ended up in Lee after the boundry changes. He had the following children by wife 1. Jennie, George W. Mattie, Walter S. & Daisy. John Clayton German/Jarman [various spellings] b. 1855-57 AR. probably Franklin Co. m. Mary Trotter, b. 1860-61 AR. Children: Infant girl, John Houston, James Wm, & Lenzy lee. Possible spellings for German-Germon, Jermon, Jerman, Jermyn, Jarman, Gearman, Gaurman, probably more. George W. [Sam] Trotter, b. 1850-51, Madrid, MO. m. Paaralee [Pauline] German/Jarman, in AAR. 1870, b. 1854-55. Children: Georgia [first born], m. Edward F. Allen, James/Jimmy, Reggie, all born in AR. John C. German & Paralee Trotter are siblings & George Trotter and Mary German are siblings. They stayed pretty close all their lives. Also after John C. German/Jarman died [unknown] Mary German m. 2. Avery Shannon. Need information on him also and I have absolutely nothing but his name. Looked for a marriage license where I knew Mary German was, but found nothing. Any help or suggestions most appreciated. If at all possible, it's best to check the microfilm for information. The microfilm is available on interlibrary loan through TSLA (Tennessee State Library & Archives) and for purchase or (members only) rental through Heritage Quest---and I'm sure most FHCs can get it. I'm not discouraging the use of the local archives---just encouraging the preservation of those old records! I like to go by the archives and try to find Jill when she has a couple of minutes so I can run a theory past her or ask her a question. The county budget doesn't allow much for "staff" so it can take a while to get answers to research questions. As for posting information from the old records to the website, I'm sure Frances will be happy for anyone to transcribe the information and send it to her! Sandy Ellis
Sandra, I don't know if Lucy is a Corbett or not. In 1860 she is not listed with the Corbett's who are now in Davidson County. When you were talking about Oak Plains were you talking to me or someone else? Barbara
Katharan I'll ask anyone willing to look! I can't find Ferrell Brandon Graham in 1860 or 1870---I'm not sure he would be on the 1860 census because he was born in September but I'm not sure of what year. (The 1880 Robertson Co. census says he's 22 years old but his death certificate says he was born in 1860.) Sometimes I look so hard I don't see---can't see the forest for the trees type thing. On most censuses, he's listed as Farrell B. Graham but I found him on one as Burkett Graham---luckily, I knew the wife/children and the county they lived in! The death certificate says his father was named John and mother was unknown. His children remembered an Aunt Addie. If you happen to run across him, I'd forever be in your debt! Sandy Ellis
William (and anyone else researching this line)--- Don't believe the story about Jesse Bartee dying in 1826---it didn't happen! He appeared in court in July, 1828--when he transfered his land to William Ballard Bartee for an undisclosed sum of money. It was the same land he bought on Barton's Creek from Montgomery Bell in 1825. Also, when Jesse transfered the land to William Ballard, it was witnessed by Geo. and H. Harkleroad! Sandy Ellis
Barbara, Cleo said his Welkers were from the Oak Plains area and William said he wasn't sure where Oak Plains is. William is familar with the Stewart County area and Oak Plains in on the 'opposite' side of the county. Sandy Ellis
Does anyone have a Graham/Meacham connection? (There was a family reunion last weekend at the fairgrounds.) I went to the reunion hoping to learn something about Ferrell Brandon Graham but no one seemed to know anything about him or where he came from. He married Fannie Shepherd in 1886 in Montgomery County. Fannie was the daughter of Martin Luther Shepherd. Ferrell and Fannie Shepherd Graham had a son Henry Patton that married Lady Bell Meacham. This is the family that started the "Graham/Meacham" reunion. They've had this reunion for years but Sunday is the first one I've attended. I thought it was interesting when I mentioned the connection between the Shepherd/Meacham families and none of these people knew about it although they knew Fannie was a Shepherd! Ferrell and Fannie were my g-grandparents---daughter Mary Louise was my grandmother. I think Ferrell is the most solid brick wall I've encountered. Although he was born between 1858 and 1860, I haven't located him on a census prior to 1880 (thanks to Debby Sullins). Thanks for any help with this one! Sandy Ellis
Jeree, A possible help for the situation you mention: "There has got to be some good stuff in the court house but how does one get to it. They don't answer mail." Have you tried the Montgomery County Archives? Their address is on the Montgomery Co. site. I don't know their policy about responding to mail, but you could contact them before sending a request. I imagine you would have to have a specific document in mind. Since I mentioned the Montgomery County Archives, I want to say that the Archives is one of the best things the county has going. The archives attempts to preserve the original records but also makes their content available-and with a smile and style. Barbara
Before we get confused---- The Lucy living with the Corbett family---what is the relationship shown? (Wondering if she was mother to one of the Corbett's.) I haven't checked the date of Lucy Bullock's birth but if she's the one that married JW Bartee, she was older than he was by a few years. Oak Plains is on the 'opposite' end of the county---between Hwy 12 and Hwy 41-A (toward Nashville)---and a whole lot closer to my end of the county than the area we are talking about! (I'm a little more familiar with this part of the county having lived here for the past 50 years.) (Cleo)--No, I haven't had a chance to contact anyone about Bullock Cemetery yet. Things 'on the hill' have been a little unsettling lately. On my side of the road is my uncle's house, my Dad's house, and my house--all seperated by driveways. Across the road from the drive between my uncle and Dad is where Travis' grandmother lives. Then, a drive to Travis' mother's house seperates it from my Aunt's house. (Wonder why they neighbor's this "Sheppard's hill"?) As everyone knows by now, Travis didn't pull through and his funeral was Sunday. On Monday, my uncle's wife had surgery----ovarian cancer. I think we are all in a state of disbelief (or something). I check in on the lists I'm on just to think about something different for a while! Sandy Ellis
Maybe you could start a Montgomery County discussion list. Just a suggestion, Barbara
Jerree, I am sorry but I believe you have a different notion of what this list if for than I do. My understanding of the various lists is for folks to join who have similiar lines to share information they have, not to do other's research for them. I am under the impression that the websites for various states, counties, etc. is the place to post copies of wills, censuses, probate records, Bible records, family letters, etc. so that anyone interested could go to them for further research----and not necessarily be a member of any list. Many people do not have the spare time to spend reading the messages from a surname list because of their busy lives or their jobs, so the websites allow them to "keep their hand" in their genealogical pursuits. Your statement, " I have been to the county site and been over it with a fine tooth comb but much of it is in the 20th century like most county history books." is, I believe, in error as I have shared several items I have personally researched in both the Montgomery Co. library and in the Archives dating back to 1800---which, unless I am mistaken, was in the 19th century. If you would look closer I believe you will find many others who have done the same. Personally, I think the Montgomery Co.website is very informative and well maintained. Perhaps you might want to visit a site called "Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness at http://raogk.rootsweb.com/ to see if there is someone there who would be willing to do some lookups in Montgomery Co. for you if you are unable to go yourself or to hire someone to do research in that county for you. I have been a member of this organization at various times when I have had the time to do lookups and I continue to try to help anyone who is wanting research from the county I live in. Perhaps you could volunteer your services for your county as well. As for another of your statements, "I just don't see how people can do genealogy and exclude history and it's causes and effects." I don't think arguing the Civil War ad nauseam does anything to enhance a list that you already consider a "dead list". There are periods of time during the year when all of the lists are a little slow as most of us do not let genealogy consume our lives to the point of forsaking our real lives. Some of us work, some of us travel, some of us just take a break from the computer. I believe you owe the members of this list an apology for your hasty words---and I hope we are all generous enough to accept that apology. Please understand that this is just my opinion and I have no intention of starting another "war". I would not have answered your message as part of the public forum if you had not made your statements in the same vein and I do feel, at least on my part, that it needed a response. If you have anything further to discuss with me please do so off the list so others will not be subjected to our discussion. Again, just my 2ยข worth. This is a `dead' list....I would even appreciate a recipe and I HATE to cook. I have been to the county site and been over it with a fine tooth comb but much of it is in the 20th century like most county history books. There has got to be some good stuff in the court house but how does one get to it. They don't answer mail. On other lists people post all kinds of wills, court minutes, deeds that they find doing their own research......you never know what will help someone else. I have asked for a few census families and was overwhelmed with the quick responses by so many people, willing to help. I just don't see how people can do genealogy and exclude history and it's causes and effects. Thanks for writing! jerree
William here is how it is listed on the index by Sistler. Corbett, J. N. 28, Sarah 21, Eugene 1, Lucy 45, J. W. Bartee 31, T Ky, Mt-912-392. Corbett is my family not Bartee as far as I know. Barbara
Cleo I can't pretend that I know where Oak Plains is located. But, Any Welker's in Montgomery County are bound to be kin. Do you know who is buried there? Jacob's family might have gone that direction. thank you William
