Jo-- Brittany's team is going to State competition Saturday. The team that wins State goes on to Georgia for Regional play. Different leagues play by different rules and have different sanctioning bodies---and different schedules. These girls haven't made it to "world series"----yet! By the way---your name sounds familiar. My name is Sandra Jo. I was named for Joe and Sandra Anderson. When I was born, my Dad worked for Cunningham & Anderson----John Talley Cunningham and Joe Anderson. Joe's wife (Sandra) was a nurse at the local health department. Joe was Daddy's friend and mentor so I guess it was only natural that he name me after them. (See---I still got a little 'genealogy/history' in this message!) Sandy Ellis
Sandra: They are having a girls softball series here at PC Beach, Fl this week. I don't suppose your grandaughter is playing in it? I think they are calling it a "world series" so hopefully she makes it next time. I wish all of the good luck. Remember the CHS Homecoming parades when they would actually let school out early that Friday afternoon and everybody walked down to Franklin Stree to watch the parade. The class rivalry between the sophs. jr and senior classes was legendary. The CHS band led by Mr Karhu was always great. I still have fond memories of the prehomecoming bon fires and snake dances that went from Greenwood Avenue to downtown and ended up at Shoneys. Or those great nighttime Christmas Parades with lots of floats and bands and then going to Woolsworth afterwards to warm up. Great memories no one can ever take away, but we must share them so others know what we remember from our youth. ----- Original Message ----- From: <AUNT10@aol.com> To: <TNMONTGO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 12, 2003 10:59 AM Subject: Re: [TNMONTGO-L] More 'not necessarily genealogy' > In a message dated 7/12/2003 11:49:49 AM Eastern Daylight Time, > sjellis@charter.net writes: > > > If you lived in Clarksville and ever went to a parade, > > you almost have to remember The Burt High Strutters! " But as a child, the best parade was the Christmas Parade which ended with Santa and then shopping afterwards!!! that was a long time ago!!! diann" Which "toy-land" did you like best? I always loved the mezzanine at McCellan's---with the trains circling over, under, around, and through everything! (Too bad our kids/grandkids have toy stores and don't know what a thrill 'toy-land' used to be!) Sandy
Genealogy is very connected to history---or should be if we are doing it right! Maybe while the list is so slow, Frances will allow us to discuss some of our memories that might provoke other memories---and lead to us to clues to other areas of research. Let's not allow our family histories to be nothing more than a list of names and dates! Let's share our experiences with others. Hopefully, one day our experiences will be of interest to someone---our stories will offer names of others whose lives crossed our paths. I was talking to my Dad a couple of days ago about a cemetery. During the conversation, he mentioned a lady he grew up with. Several years later, this woman's daughter and I were best friends. (Unfortunately, she was killed in an auto wreck in 1957.) All these years, all the friendships, all the "ties" between the families----and my Dad never mentioned that the woman grew up living on the street behind his house until this week! From the cemetery story, he mentioned William DAVIDSON and John MILLER---along with "Mr Irving" (MANNING) damming the creek and building a 'lake' in the area near the intersection in front of Gary Mathews car lot. These names don't mean anything to me as far as my genealogy---but what wonderful stories descendants of these people would have for their family histories! "WE" have so many stories to tell! Maybe we were once a boy/girl scout, played some sport in or out of school, won a ribbon in 4-H, a "sweetheart", "king", or "queen" of a class/club. How many people worked on building a float for a parade? How about attending a dance or a fireworks display at Dunbar Cave---or a dance at Cunningham Lake? Now, here's one I'd like to see more about---a "memorial", history----any kind of 'tribute'! If you lived in Clarksville and ever went to a parade, you almost have to remember The Burt High Strutters! This was the most talented group of young people----their dance routines put others to shame! What happened to them? Where are they today---did any go on to further their dancing skills? Better yet---"WHO" were they? Who was their coach? These people were to Burt High School what the Jubilee Singers are to Fisk University! (What I'd give to see a parade with a 'real' float and the Burt High Strutters---and Ft. Campbell's Military Band! Wonderful memories my grandchildren will never get to experience except in my stories.) Does anyone have names, photos, etc---a history of this group of young people? I've rattled on too long----time for someone else to share a memory, a history, drop a name or two, send Frances a photo for the web site---- Sandy Ellis
Sandy, Congratulations to the Clarksville National Girls Softball League, your granddaughter, and you. There's nothing like "living" genealogy. Barbara
Well, I failed to mention the 6-yr-old All Star----tee ball doesn't have the opportunity to go to State tournaments! (Her paternal lines include Norris, Brown, Bearden---the Norris line is from GA) At the district level, the other teams pulled her birth certificate----said she "couldn't be 6-years-old"! I guess that's why the league agreed to let her 'play up' and even fill in when the 8-9 year old team was a player short. At her first practice on the tee ball team, parents were concerned for their children's safety because she knew how to play. The coach (my brother) 'used' her to teach the other little girls---and they beat an all-boys tee ball team in tournament play! Also, when parents of a 12-year-old team were told their daughters had to learn to slide, the parents laughed and asked the coach (my son-in-law this time) how he was going to teach the girls to slide. He told his daughter to go to 3rd base. Then, he told her to run home but as she neared the plate, he said "slide!"--and down she dropped---right under the 12-year-old catcher. Guess what? The older girls learned to slide this season!
Way to go, granddaughter of Sandy Ellis!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sandy I too have spent many an hour in the stands at softball tournaments, so know exactly how happy and proud you must be feeling!!! Congrats to both of you! And GOOD LUCK at the State!!!! Diann

Memories, memories....I know that your grandaughter's previous line is proud of her tonite, just as her grandmother is! Years ago I played softball and we were district champs and went to State. The girls that played way back then are still friends and meet once a month to eat and chat! Good luck to her. Hello, I have tried going to the NARA site for info. and can't seem to get the hang of finding various links. I have gotten info. re: The Final Roll and The Dawes Roll for tracing Native Am. lineages, but are there links for Rev. War Pensions, Rosters etc.. or any of the early Wars including the Civil War? Actually the link for NARA did work on all but the first e-mail. Thanks for the will link - I have a copy of that will. I just found out this week that Thomas (2ndgrtgrandfather) and Ross (brother) fought in the Mexican American War under General Z. Taylor. Afterwards they both went back to Montgomery Co., married and returned to TX . I started reading a book (read until three this morning) about it and had not realised that after the initial start a notice was sent to the newspaper in Nashville and hundreds of young men in their teens and twentys volunteered and went to TX to fight in Mexico. Some estimates put the number of all the volunteers at over six thousand. There were units from all over the States. One of the most interesting units was the Irish who were San Patricios (paddys even in Spanish!) who refused to fight against other Roman Catholics so they all deserted and fought for the Mexican gov. Most were caught and tried for treason (by Gen. Winfield Scott) and executed. I grew up in TX and learn more about TX history doing genealogy than I did in school:) Thanks KK:) >>> Charmaine >>> >>> >>> Charmaine Riley Holleyf >>> archivehobbit@mac.com >>> >>> "...but hobbits have a passion for family history." >>> - Tolkein in Lord of the Rings >>> >>> >> >> >> > >
Does anyone have the books Tennesseans in the War with Mexico? I would be most appreciative of a lookup. I know that Ross and Thomas MORRIS of Montgomery Co., TN fought in Taylor's Army but am not sure whether they were in TX and volunteered from there or whether they joined up in Tennessee.
