    1. [TNMONTGO-L] Benjamin Whitehead and George Fort
    2. theshadow
    3. Hi Folks, I hope one of you can help me with a puzzle. My 7X Ggfa. was Benjamin Whitehead (ca. 1750-1836). Several times he gave "Deeds of Gifts" and in one (W.B. C, p. 609, Montgomery Co., TN) it states that Benjamin Whitehead deeded certain property to the children of Gincy Trotter and George Fort . Richard Whitehead was appointed trustee in the transaction. There is no record of who George Fort was. Fort may have been George's middle name and Benjamin called him that. Gincy Trotter was Benjamin's daughter, Tennessee Whitehead. She was married to a George Trotter. I believe (but cannot prove) that after George died in Hinds Co., MS Gincy then married her sister's (Angelica Whitehead Rook Jackson) widower, Mitchell Jackson. Gincy died October 12, 1849 in Hinds Co., MS if this proves to be true. Does anyone have any idea who this "George Fort" may have been? I have checked out every "Fort" family I can find in Montgomery Co. and I cannot find a single George among them. I'd appreciate any help I can get as I'd really like to prove who this man was. Thanks, Jean Hancock in TX

    3. Joseph B. Campbell (20 Mar 1820-16 Jul 1874) married 8 Nov 1841 to Rebecca Whitford in Stewart County, TN, where he is buried. I do not find him mentioned as being connected with any of the early Stewart County Campbells and wonder if he might be related to any early Montgomery County Campbells. Any help very much appreciated. George Holder, Long Beach, MS

    3. This fam lived, and is buried with tombstones in the East part of Montgomery Co., TN, near Half Pone Creek, adjacent to the Robertson (now Cheatham) Co. line; and had a son, James Williams (1800-1853) m Martha Wilson, his cousin (1807-1849), and they are buried in their "own cemetery" further South in Montgomery Co. This is the Henry and James you are finding in the 1850 census. We recently placed a metal road sign on the James Williams Cemetery, but the Henry Williams one is remote on a 130 acre farm, and we could not place a sign anywhere near it. Henry had a post office here in the 1820's, and named the place, "Mount Henry", as it's up on a bluff above Half Pone Creek. The ones being written about here by you and others, are in the NE part of Montgomery Co, NOT on Half Pone Creek. The name "Conrad" does not appear in the Half Pone Creek Williams fam, that I have found. I am NOT a descendant, but have just put some pieces together on this family. "Patsy" is the earliest nickname for Martha, but "Mattie" was in use by 1900, maybe before. Removing this "Mount Henry" Henry and son James from your data may lessen the confusion somewhat, I hope! Cleo. > 1.Was Henry Williams the father to Henry J. Williams, and was this Henry > J. Williams my James Williams, to differentiate him from his father > Henry? Was Conrad W. 1. [TNMONTGO-L] To Jim, Coleen, and list: Re: Williams etc help!!! info overload!
    2. Thank you all so much. This has been an awful line for me to work on, in more ways than one!... After examining the document excerpts, I am asking the following questions: 1 am going from least likely to most likely in my mind... if you see flaws please point them out. 1.Was Henry Williams the father to Henry J. Williams, and was this Henry J. Williams my James Williams, to differentiate him from his father Henry? Was Conrad W. Williams the son of Henry J. Williams? Does anyone have a name for henry j. williams' wife? I am getting more confused now, but that is normal for me! 2.Why would conrad get a 1/8th portion , which sounds by reading that it was an expected amount, from the estate, unless he was the minor son of Henry Williams 1, The estate was not probated to it's conclusion to the heirs(children ) untill the death of Matty Williams, correct? If this is so, then Henry J. Williams was probably at his majority and became guardian of his younger brother, conrad, upon the death of his Mother, Matty... the name Matty can be short for Martha, correct? Was Henry Williams 1 also named Henry J. Williams, the james williams of my record? Henry williams 1 and Matty had alot of children. but what were Henry and Matty's birth dates is there any record of burial, grave, ages at death? What did Henry Williams 1 die of? what did Matty die of? 3. census record Montgomery co TN 1850 shows a James Williams, wife Martha...no Conrad listed, and he wouldnt be, because he is married and living in Iowa in 1850 James is old enough at 49 to have had a son in 1822 but this martha would have only been 15... Was this James williams and wife Martha the older brother and sister in law of conrad williams? At 49 to conrad's 28 years in 1850 that seems to be a reasonable thought to me. This would have also made this james, or Henry James, if he was so named, and if this James was the son of henry williams 1, old enough in 1840 to be the guardian to conrad.... 4. Henry and Matty williams, son Henry J. Williams, on 1850 census James and Martha Williams, and james and martha williams on conrad's death cert... I just love genealogy research!!! <BG> You all are just great. any thoughts on all this rambling appreciated... by the way, just one more thing, I heard that Henry Williams 1 was buried in his own cemetery on his land. true or not? Is Matty with him? any grave pics, anyone?? Hugs to distant cousins, 'cuz I figure we are, but I'm just not sure of the degree!!! gloria ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the Internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! 3. I'm new to the TNMONTGO list, but old to Montgomery Co. genealogy, and you seem to have hit on one of my families. The guardian bond would have been issued for Conrad Williams if he inherited property but was underage. The court would have appointed a guardian to hold the inheritance in trust until the minor reached age 21. I believe that my ancestor Margaret (Williams) Johnson Gowans (1800-1873) was an aunt to your Conrad Williams. I don't have this family quite sorted out, but below are some court records (puzzle pieces) you may not have seen yet. My ancestor Margaret was married first to Henry Johnson (d. 1836) then William Gowans. Regards, Jim Long Franklin, TN Montgomery County Deed Book B, page 183, 9 Nov 1797: Samuel Allen to Henry Williams, 70 acres on West Fork of Red River for $140, "Beginning at a Beech and black gum the SW corner of Campbell's originall survey and Runs E 116 poles thence N 96 poles thence W 116 poles to Campbell's line thence S 96 poles to the Beginning"; land was part of grant to James Campbell by State of NC, deeded to Abraham Allen then to Samuel Allen; witnesses: M. Phillips, Abraham Allen Montgomery County Deed Book I, page 623, 9 Jul 1801: Henry Williams to William Jordan, 67 acres on Little West Fork for $210, "Beginning at a Beach and black gum the SW corner of Captain James Campbell's runs thence E with south bou. line of sd. Campbell then running east along Campbell's line to the sd. West fork then running up the said West fork the meanders thereof to where said Williams' line crosses the Creek then S along William's line to the Beginning"; witnesses: John H. Was legal age 21 in TN back then? Was this court action similar to some states law of emancipation of a minor? Was this a guarantee of good behavior of a minor by a family member? from this bond I am assuming that it is possible that a Mr. Henry Williams was putting up a bond so that Conrad could gain his majority earlier than age 21, possibly because of the death of his father, and/or mother. I do not think his mother would have automatically received guardianship of Conrad at that time if his father died, if Henry was named as guardian, but I am not sure on these points. First of all, where is Hurricane Creek? Is there anyone who might be descended from Silvy/Silva and her first husband, ELIAS HARRIS? She apparently was the step-mother to my 6xGGrandmother, ANGELICA WHITEHEAD ROOK JACKSON and the only grandmother Angelica's children ever knew. Allied family names for Silva and Elias Harris and Silva and John Hargrove are DOWLEN; COCKE; DUKE; GREEN; PRITCHETT; POPE; BLANTON; MCCORKLE; LOWE; GOOD; WILLIAMS, LAWRENCE, WHITENTON, SHEARON, RUSH, ALLEN, and REDDING. Following is the information I have on her but I cannot say it is "written in concrete." I would appreciate any help with her or any of her descendants. 3. Hi folks, I have upgraded the Montgomery County web pages with information added to a number of sites. If you have tried to contact me for the last five days and I have not answered you there is a reason. We were in the middle of the Big ICE STORM and have been out of power since Monday. Luckily for us ours was restored last night but there are still many folks out. Thanks to the folks that continue to send us information for the MC pages. Frances

    3. I printed this out to use for future reference while transcribing wills and deeds. Very handy... Jean Von Stachon recently transcribed about 600 court records, deeds and wills for several counties in Virginia. She made images of many of the common words found in these old documents, and has prepared a table showing the handwriting with the transcribed word. Feel free to pass this link on in your mail lists, or use the link as you wish. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/special/oldenglish/oldenglish.htm
