MTGS is making a great effort to invite interested folks in all forty counties of our Middle Tennessee area to its regular bi-monthly meetings. We hope you will come to our meetings; find them informative and fun. The Middle Tennessee Genealogical Society will hold its next meeting Saturday, March 20, at the Edmondson Pike Branch of the Nashville Public Library, 5501 Edmondson Pike, Nashville, TN at 1 p.m. Julia Otey Lee (MA Education, Tennessee State; MA, Vanderbilt) is a teacher in the Nashville-Metropolitan School System, a member of the Board of Directors, Middle Tennessee Genealogical Society and the Committee on Slavery and Multicultural Education of Carnton Plantation, Franklin. She has shared her experiences in African-American genealogical research at past MTGS seminars and bi-monthly meetings. Her presentation "Blacks in Blue and Gray" will outline the role of Middle Tennessee African-Americans in Civil War military service, both Union and Confederate, as developed through research in pension records, compiled military service records, Freedmen's Bureau records and regimental histories. Refreshments will be served after the meeting. Visit our webite http://www.mtgs.org for more information about our meetings. Hope to see you there, Katheryne Cowan MTGS Webmaster

This is probably the Hickory Grove Cemetery. It's now on Ft. Campbell. Greetings, My research shows that a 4,800 acre land grant was made to Gen. James West Green in 1787 for his Revolutionary War service. William Sullivant acquired acreage from this grant and gave it to his daughter Nancy Sullivant who married Samuel Smith. In 1804 Samuel and Nancy Smith built a stately home that resembles the Ames Plantation House in Memphis on this property in Montgomery County, TN near McAlister's Crossroads. I am interested in locating this house, if standing, and discussing the history of the place with anyone who knows about it. Thanks
Shelly, I think we may have an interest in the same Whitfield family. Rather than take up everyone's time sorting this out, let's first see if we have a match. Please contact me at blbblb@fidnet.com Barb
Becky, You might try posting on the Henderson County, KY website. I have Ashley relatives that came from and still live in that area. It is a side connection for me, so I don't have much to share, but you might get lucky. Quite a few of my folks from the Robertson, Montgomery, Sumner and Todd County area moved to Henderson. Just a thought. Jenny in Texas

Actually I found the Moore book in a library not too far from me. This library is the Sutro (CA State Library) in San Francisco. Here is the catalog entry for the book: Record # 1 Title : Record of commissions of officers in the Tennessee Militia / compiled by Mrs. John Trotwood Moore. Author : Moore, Mary Brown Daniel, 1875- Call Number : UA462 .M66 Publisher : Nashville, Tenn.? : Tennessee Historical Commission, 1947- Description : v. ; 26 cm. Subject Heading(s) : Tennessee--Militia--Registers. Tennessee--Genealogy. Notes : Includes indexes. "Reprinted from Tennessee historical quarterly by the Adjutant General of the state of Tennessee." Incomplete Contents : Vol. 1. 1796-1811. Other Author : Tennessee Historical Commission. Original Number : RLINCCSG86-B1860 DBCN : ABQ-0051 Catalog : California State Library Item Holdings : Location Call Number Volume Material Status Sutro Library (RR) UA462 .M66 1 Book Available Sutro Library (RR) UA462 .M66 1 Book Available It seemed to me from looking at this page: http://www.library.ca.gov/html/pubser04.cfm that Sutro limits their lending services to within the state of CA, but you might ask your local library if they can request the book. If you can't find the book elsewhere, I'll be glad to check it out next time I go to Sutro. That would be sometime in the next several months. Then you could let me know what info you need from it. Deanna, I'm not Jean but maybe I can help. Martha J Whitehead b. Oct 1809, TN, d. 8 May 1882, Stewart Co., TN. Henry E Cherry b. 1814 in Stewart; d. 8 May 1889, Stewart. both buried in the Cherry Cem., Big Rock, Stewart. Henry E. is my 2nd. great grand uncle. Below are notes for him. Louise Henry E. Cherry appeared before the county court of Stew. Co. at its Oct. term 1856 and motioned the court to have the ear mark of his stock recorded which was granted him, the mark being "Smooth Crop under bit and over bit in the Right and under Square in the left Ear". Oct. Term 1856. Will dated 11 Apr 1889, proven June Court, Stewart, Co., TN, 1889, Book M, p. 580. Henry's will names his 2nd wife, leaving her the tract of land that "George W. Cherry inherited from his father, the late Daniel Cherry". Eliza's property was to go to the male children of son S.J. Cherry at her death. He names other children in bequests, one being E.E. Cherry. Death records for E.E. indicate he was born at Bumpus Mills, no doubt the home of Henry E. The property left to daughter Henrietta was passed on to grand children, sons of daughters Drucill and Narcissa, at her death, no doubt because she was passed child bearing years & unmarried Martha Jane was also identified by her maiden name at the time of her father's will; her husband was dec'd. Henry stated that he had given D.R. "all the property that I desire him to have of my estate." Daughters Drucilla Legate and Etna Walker had also received all he desired them to have. S.J. Cherry was the exec. and the will was attested to by L.D. Hargis. Confusing is the presence in Stewart Co. Henry C Cherry [b. 1814-1815, d. 1899 TX, son of William B Cherry Sr, who married Malitha Shemwell [c. 1818, d 15 Nov 1894 TX] Henry C. lived in Dist. 7: 1860 census: Henry 45, farmer, born TN, real estate 200, personal prop. 1030; Malethy 50, Sarah 18; William 16; Thomas 14; Joseph 8. Jean, Maybe you can help me. In my family it has been reported that Martha J. Whitehead married my gggrandfather, Henry E. Cherry. The dates that I have for Martha are 1802-1882. Do you have her in her family information on the Whiteheads? I have been looking for verification that Henry E. Cherry's wife was Martha Whitehead, but have not been able to find it. At one time I was looking at documents for Benjamin hoping that I would find something, but never did. If I can find what I have on Benjamin, I'll let you know. Thanks for any help you may be able to give me. Deanna O.
