    1. [Fwd: [KYJP] SGT W. H. McCarty]

    3. Don said this auction is running now. Maybe someone researching the McCarty family will see this be able to own a treasure! Just found this old photo for sale on Ebay. It has this info with it: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=13960&item=6504276590&rd=1 ID'd tintype housed in CDV mat of SGT W. H. McCarty. enlisted on 7/10/1861 at Camp Boone Tennessee as a private. Camp Boone is said to have been located around Hopkinsville, ky and Clarksville, Tn. both cities are on the border of Kentucky and Tennessee. Camp Boone was also used by Gen. Forrest as a base of operations for a period of time. It was also used as a training camp for the confederate army. McCarty was mustered into Company "C" of the 3rd Kentucky Infantry. it is unlisted what town McCarty came from, a little more research may reveal something. Date of discharge is unknown as well. he was listed as a POW on 3/25/1864 at Paducah, Ky and also listed as wounded on the same day and place. he was promoted to Sergeant, but no date is given. I purchased this image while stationed at Ft. Campbell, Ky (which is in between Hopkinsville & Clarksville) at a antique mall in Cadiz, Ky between Paducah, Ky and Clarksville, Tn. Most of the soldiers from the 3rd KY where from Paducah and Clarksville. The image is super clear with a small blemish on the image to the right of his face but it doesnt affect McCarty himself. He has tinted cheeks. He is wearing a slouch hat and a medium grey uniform with sergeant stripes. His name is written lightly in pencil on the reverse of the image. A Very nice image, one of my favorites!! ============================================= It's up to 297.00 already....ouch! 1. Fw: MS State Asylum Hospital records

    3. This is very interesting and something we might want to keep in our files. Jean ----- Original Message ----- From: LANDINMC@aol.com To: MSHINDS-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, January 07, 2005 10:03 PM Subject: MS State Asylum Hospital records This message is for everybody who has asked over the years about names at the state hospital that used to be in Hinds County. Physically, it was located on what is now Lakeland Drive between University Medical Center and St. Dominics Hospital, and there is a large cemetery of unmarked graves there because patients died and were buried on the grounds in paupers graves. I was going through the 1930 Federal Census tonight looking for some records, and realized that from page 7 through page 55 of the Hinds County 1930 records are all the names of patients at the asylum. Hundreds of them. They are recorded by name, age, race, sex, where they were born, and where their parents were born, and listed as patients with no occupation. Olivia Ferguson was the census taker. They were in the 13th census district of Hinds County, Ward 7. The several lists are divided by sex and by race, which is probably the way they were housed at the facilities. So if you have somebody missing that you know was in that hospital at that point in time, check out the 1930 census. This is the first time I've seen patient information available for that hospital, ever. I thought all the records had been thrown away, because Archives didn't have them and neither does Whitfield, the current hospital in Rankin County. I need to go back now and check to see if all the children at the Baptist and Methodist orphanages were also censused. They were living at what was then the village of Liberty Grove, and what is now where the Jackson Zoo is located, next to Cedar Lawn Cemetery on West Capitol Street. Feel free to past this information on to other groups and lists, because it has been lost information for a long time. Mary Collins Landin Utica, Hinds County, MS ______________________________

    1. Descendants of James Chapman and Susannah H. (possibly Gilpin) -- please add/correct/connect
    2. MICHAEL MARTINEZ
    3. Please add/correct/connect as you can ... James <possibly T.> Chapman was born about 1826 in Connecticut according to the 1860 census for Henry Co., TN. For some reason he left CT at some point and moved all the way down to Georgia where he married his wife Susannah H. about 1850. I have found a record of a marriage between a James Chapman and a Susannah H. Gilpin on 5 Dec 1849 in Upson County, GA but have yet to positively confirm if this is "my" James and Susannah yet. It is known that James and Susannah were in Georgia for the birth of their first child in 1852 because on several census records, GA is given as her state of birth. James and Susannah had the following children: 1. Mary Ann "Mollie" Chapman born 1852 in GA. She was married to James Beaird about 1872. James Beaird died about 1884 and Mary Ann "Mollie" Chapman died in 1886 in Christian County, KY. They had the following children: Mary Jimmie Beaird, Benjamin Beaird, William Beaird, Brank Beaird, Robert Beaird, and Charles Elmo Beaird. 2. Benjamin Franklin Chapman born about 1854 in TN. Haven't a clue what happened to this child. He was in the 1860 census for Henry County, TN. He lived long enough that he left enough of a legacy that his sister named one of her children after him. 3. Frances A. Chapman born abt 1856 in TN. She married a Thomas A. Beard/Beaird on 25 Dec 1876 in Christian County, KY. Thomas A. Beard/Beaird and James Beaird who married Mollie Chapman may be related. Don't know what happened to Frances after her marriage as I have been unable to find her. 4. DeWitt C. Chapman was born abt 1858 in TN (probably Henry County). He dies after the 1880 census as he is listed listed in his sister Mollie's home as a "boarder" in Christian County, KY. Don't know what happened to him after that except that he left enough of a legacy that his younger brother named my great grandfather after him. 5. Ruby Chapman was born 1861/1862 in TN (either Henry County or Montgomery County). She married later in life to John Combs in Sherman, Grayson, TX but the couple never had children of their own. Ruby raised her sister Mollie's children after Mollie's death in 1886. 6. James Thurston Chapman (some say "Jr." after his father) born 30 Apr 1863 in TN (either Henry County or Montgomery County). He married Lee Ella McCarter on 12 Feb 1885 in Clarksville, Montgomery, TN. James Thurston Chapman died 6 Oct 1931 in Christian County, KY and is the patriarch of the Chapman family of that area. They had the following children: Susie Eleanor Chapman, James Allen Chapman, Gertrude Chapman, Della Mary Katherine Chapman, Fannie Myrtle Chapman, Minnie Mae Chapman, DeWitt Edward Chapman, Sarah Lillian Chapman, Odis Perman Chapman, and Annie Elizabeth "Bess" Chapman. 2. MICHAEL MARTINEZ
    3. Please add, correct, and/or connect as you can below .... Anderson B. Mathis (son of Josiah Mathis and Mary Harmon) was born 1818 in Trigg County, KY. He appeared in the 1860 census for Stewart County, TN. He died 13 Feb 1862 in Stewart County, TN. He married Martha W. Francis on 27 Jun 1841 in Stewart County, TN. Martha W. Francis was born 1824 in Trigg County, KY. She is somehow related to Tabitha Francis (b. 1820 in Trigg County, KY) who married into the Joiner family, possibly a sister which would make her father John Francis of SC. Anderson B. Mathis and Martha W. Francis had the following children that I know of: 1. Mary A. Mathis born abt 1842 in KY. She died after 1860. 2. James H. Mathis born abt 1845 in KY. He died after 1860. 3. Margaret E. Mathis born about 1849 in KY. She married first an unknown HARRIS (who died prior to 1870) and had daughter Mary Harris (b. 1867). She married secondly William PARKER on 26 March 1872 and had children Henry C. PARKER (b. 1873) and Anna PARKER (b. 1874). 4. Malinda Ellen Mathis born Mar 1850 in KY. She married George W. KNIGHT in Stewart County, TN and had the following children: Chelsey Cornelius Knight, Cora A. Knight, Mary Knight, Mattie Knight, Katie Knight, George Knight, James Frank Knight, Ernest Norman Knight, and Vernon Norman Knight. She died after 1892. 5. Nancy J. Mathis born on 18 Dec 1852 in KY.
