    3. A couple of years ago I was looking for Mrs. Beach's book, "Along the Warioto" when I was on a trip to Clarksville. I called all the bookstores I could find in the yellow pages and no one had it. Several stores referred me to Elder's Bookstore in Nashville. Before I flew home, I allowed time to go to Elder's and they did not have it either, but took a request for it. Several months later they called me that they had it and sent it to me. At that time I paid $ 50 for the book plus shipping. If you have relatives in the area, its a good idea to ask them to look at yard sales and flea markets for books like this. Sometimes people get lucky. Deanna

    3. Sandra: Thanks for the information. Will follow up on the library. Since I am in Florida will go local, but am planning a trip sometime in May so will also make use of the library there. Have a good week-end. And thanks again. Jo.... Sandra Ellis wrote: > I'm not sure if the magazine is still in publication. > > The books are at the Clarksville-Montgomery Co. Public Library. 3. I'm not sure if the magazine is still in publication. The books are at the Clarksville-Montgomery Co. Public Library. (During that time period, Mrs. Alley also published the "Montgomery Co. Genealogical Journals" that you might be interested in.) They were available for purchase from several book sellers and may be available on interlibrary loan. (I don't know where you live or if you have access to the local library.) I work for Mrs. Ursula's step-grandson and several months ago I asked about some of her books. He asked if I needed copies of them so the family might have some available. (I didn't want copies because I already have many of them-----I am interested in obtaining permission to put them on the internet.) By the way----for anyone that is in the Clarksville area or will be here on May 5th: Friends of the Clarksville-Montgomery County Public Library is having a genealogy workshop that day. Details are on the library's web site at www.clarksville.org The people conducting the workshops include Irene Griffey, David Smith, Jill Hastings-Johnson, Eleanor Williams, Gregory Poole, Timothy Pulley, Robert (Bob) Lewis, and Cleo Hogan-----a pretty impressive bunch of people if you want information about local history or genealogy. There will also be bookseller tables available---maybe Mrs. Ursula's books will be among them. (I'm not associated with any of these people in any way. I just noticed the announcements in various places but have not seen it mentioned on the list.) Sandy Ellis

    3. Another resource for finding out of print books is abebooks.com. This is a site where independent booksellers can publish their inventory. You search the site for the book you want, and depending on the bookseller, can buy either directly from the bookseller or through abebooks. Abebooks.com lists three copies of "Along the Warioto" right now. Sherri Nichols

    3. Sandra: The publication I referred to is just a small magazine titled "Cumberland" published by McQuiddy Pub. Nashville. Publisher & Sr. Editor James D Lester, Editor Pam Roberts. So if you are not familiar with it maybe it didn't last very long. In my genealogy searching I have become fascinated with Clarksville/ Montgomery Co. history. On the last page are listed books about the Cumberland. Mrs. Beach has several on the list: "Along the Warioto: A history of Montgomery County, Tennessee" 1964 rpt.1965 by McQuiddy, "Clarksville Edition of the National Trade Review, 1895" reprint compiled by Mrs. Beach 1977 Print by Christoph Prt.. "Picturesque Clarksville, Past and Present" by Mrs. Beach and Ann E. Alley, McQuiddy 1973 with 522 pages for $15.00! There are several more compilations of cemetary records, census, tax lists with Mrs. Alley (Adams, Tn.). I wonder if any of these might be in the library. Thanks for any help. Keep up the good work. 3. If you are referring to "Cumberland Lore", it is published by the Leaf-Chronicle but I don't know the publication dates (it's an insert in the daily newspaper). Mrs. Ursula passed away in Dec. 1992. Eleanor Shepherd Williams is now the official Historian of Montgomery County. I've not seen any of Mrs. Ursula's books for sale in some time. (That's not to say there aren't any. I just haven't seen any.) What book(s) are you interested in? Sandy Ellis

    3. I have found a publication "Cumberland" about Clarksville. The first issue 1977, and very interesting. There is mention of books by Ursula S. Beach, Montgomery County Historian. It gives her address to order and I am wondering if she is still the Historian, or if anyone knows where her books could be purchased. Also if the "Cumberland" is still published? Thanks. JSA

    3. Elsie, The Roxy is still on the corner of 1st and Franklin. It replaced the Lillian. The Sunset Drive-In was on what we now call Madison Street where TradeWinds Shopping Center is. (That McDonald's sets about where Henry Newhouse had a "dairy freeze".) The MoonLit Drive-In was in "North Clarksville" on 41-A (Ft. Campbell Blvd) about where Magic Wheels Skating Rink is/was (haven't been that way in so long I don't know if the skating rink is still there!). (Further out 41-A toward the State Line was the Family Drive-In but they specialized in x-rated movies.) Elder's Opera House was on the Public Square/Franklin Street. I just wondered the names of the others that my Dad remembered as a child---before the Capitol was built. I spent a lot of Saturday's at the Capitol or Roxy---watching 10-cent matinees but Daddy remembers when Gene Autry and Champion were 'live' at the Capitol. (That's how I knew Champion had a gun on his bridle.) Daddy thinks the name of one he went to was the "Princess" and I haven't found a reference to it in anything around the house---thought someone on the list might know! Sandy Ellis

    3. Sandy: I don't know the answers to your questions, but a wonderful idea. I've been curious about the types of work the folks did, and that is a lot of the reason for so much moving from place to place. Thus, makes it so hard to trace them. Maybe your idea will spur listers to think about the businesses in the area and who worked there. I have a barber and a barkeep in my line! Would love to know where they worked. Maybe in the tavern that you mentioned. My line is Brandon/WettsteinReynolds and find very little mention of them on the list. I read everything and it's always interesting no matter that mine are not there. A wonderful site and good job by everyone. Jo...
