In the 1850 census I have seen numerous families of Smiths and Hicks. Is anyone here part of the Hicks or the Smith family? Thanks, Dennis Doughty
I am descended from the Thomas Preston Leslie family from Monroe Co (Jalapa), TN that migrated to Hamilton County, Il in 1851. I know the Leslie's were related to the Smiths through marriage but am not quite sure of the exact connection. I have some old letters from 1881 that mentions the Smith family. I will pull them out and post the information. I have been in touch with a Smith descendent living in Oregon where some of the Smiths migrated to - this particular Smith prospered enormously and the family still lives off a trust he funded prior to 1900. I think he started growing wheat and decided to buy and sell farm implements and did very well. I'll have to do some digging to get the details, if you think it might be related to the Smiths you're researching. Other families mentioned from Monroe County are Shadden, Williams (G.W.), Edington and a few others I can't recall just now.
