Major Divine, of that day, was a great man, and was honored to the honors of his country in which he lived. He was the son of Thomas Divine, who died in the year of 1856, also an uncle to Major Paul E. Divine of Johnson City, Tenn. Mr. Divine was carried to McMinn County by the soldiers and put to death. He was buried where he was killed in an open field, where he remained for one year, after which he was brought back to Big Creek to the old family cemetery. The Major was always a brave, courageous and fearless man, and willing to die for what he believed to be right. The Major shot one of the soldiers and the wounded man died. Of course I guess this piece won’t be much interesting to the folks of today, but it will be borne in mind that his kinsmen will honor him as being a great man.” ---Shelley Webb.
