    1. Benjamin and William GILES - 1840 Monroe Co, TN
    2. I have been looking for the birth family of the William GILES who married Peggy HENSLEY in 1835 in Roane County, TN for about eight years now, so please bear with me as I try again. What follows is an attempt to get at him through a Benjamin GILES: Does anyone have any documentation about any family connections that Benjamin GILES, enumerted in the 17th Regiment of Monroe County in the 1840 census might have had to others in Monroe or Roane County in the 1840s? Benjamin and his wife and his wife Telitha HYDEN/HYTEN/HEITEN (etc) are found in Monroe County in 1840. He is the Benjamin GILES who participated from Roane in the Cherokee Removals about 1838. By 1850, Benjamin and his wife had gone on to Bradley County, TN (near Cleveland, I'm told). By 1860, they had migrated to Gentry Co, Missouri (as had the elder William GILES, Calvin, and Houston GILES mentioned below). In the 1840 Monroe County, TN census, Benjamin is found two households "away from" William GILES (b abt 1781 in VA). Also nearby is Mary A. LORANCE, likely Telitha's sister Mary Ann HYDEN/HYTEN who married (1st) Joseph LORANCE in Roane Co, TN in 1829. I mention the LORANCE connection because I have data that suggests that this elder William GILES married Polly HOUSTON/HUSTON whose mother *may* have been a LORANCE. Does anyone know? In the 1850 Bradley County census, Benjamin is enumerated just before another William GILES - this one b abt 1802 in TN with a wife Rebecca b abt 1804 in NC. My own research and that of some of Benjamin's descendants suggest that Benjamin GILES was the son of the elder William of the 1840 Monroe Co census. That William is found in Roane Co, TN in 1850. He is the father of Calvin and Houston GILES and all indications point to him also being the father of the William GILES (b abt 1810 in VA [or AL??]) who married Peggy HENSLEY in Roane in 1835. I doubt that he was that William's father as well as the father of the William GILES in Bradley Co (b abt 1802). (Aside: that unknown Bradley Co William is really gumming up my research right now.) Can anyone help me straighten out my GILES line in the time period between 1781 and 1850? I will follow the slenderest leads, so don't hesitate to offer them. Known variant surname spellings for all these William GILESes include: JILES, JIALS, JOILS, GILE, GILLS.... __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
