Joyce, I have a document written by my 3rd great-grandmother about the move from North Carolina to Indiana around 1820. She gave several reasons for moving. First her father was leasing a farm from his older brother and when the lease ran out he wanted to own his own land. Indiana had just become a state and so he decided to go to Indiana as many of his neighbors had. Second reason was that North Carolina was a slave state and her parents did not believe in slavery. I believe that these 2 reasons motivated many moves between 1820 and 1860. You might look at 1850 newspapers in Monroe Co. to see if there were land sales advertised. I also believe the slavery question might have been a factor since E. Tenn. was so divided during the CW. I'll bet a lot of families who stayed wished they had moved before the war. Kay
