I do not know from whom Harry Brown got the lot, perhaps it belonged to Malissa Doyle. There were two, large, two-story, frame buildings on this lot, one on the lower corner and one on the upper corner, both standing near the street. The house on the upper corner was where Jake Taylor was murdered and thrown out of an upper window into the street. Those present were a man by the name of Minkler, B.F. Payne of Coker Creek and George Keyhill. These parties were drinking and the difficulty arose over a game of cards. Jake Taylor was a brother of LeRoy Taylor and lived about a mile west of Madisonville. Mrs. Doyle was living in the house at the time and knew all the facts surrounding the murder of Taylor, but the court was unable to find them out from her. Minkler disappeared the night of the tragedy and was never again heard from. Keyhill left Madisonville and went to the mountains of Monroe County, living with John W. Stratton until death of the latter, after which he lived with his son, William, until the time of his death. B.F. Payne was arrested for the crime and brought to Madisonville. He requested a change of venue and was tried at Athens, where he was convicted and given a light sentence in the penitentiary, which he served. It was generally believed that he was only an accessory to the crime and that Minkler was the guilty party.” ---Vastine Stickley.
