Hi Gene, My computer crashed a few months ago. My son was able to retrieve one of my large files but I am still scratching around working to fill in the many blanks. I don't remember writing to you before but that could be my memory glitch. If you wrote and I did not answer, I apologise. There are as many opinions on old Nathan Kirkland as there are researchers and as varied. Cheesquire, 105 NC & his wife Naca, 100 NC are listed on the 1870 Cherokee Co. NC census in the Cheoah Twp, PO Valleytown on 7/12/1870, as # 102 living with Jesse Featherhead 65 NC & children. All are listed as Indian. #/s 29-32 are some of my Millsaps relatives # 54-69 are my Williams, (my ggg gps are here) Millsaps & Kirkland/Giles relatives. #96-97 Millsaps, Hooper. # 108 & 110 Williams & Caringers. # 69 are John Jackson (the Bushwacker) & Julia Ann Giles Kirkland. Julia is my gg aunt, the sister to James Madison Giles, my gg gf. James M. Giles son Thomas E. married Sarah Caroline Kirkland, dtr of Jesse. Giles & Kirklands on my gf, George W. Giles side. Williams & Millsaps on my gm, Mary Williams Giles side. I have seen all the Cherokee Applications pretaing to this Kirkland heritage. Nowhere & no one says Nathan is also known as Cheesquire. It was never said as such til Paul Long saw a drawing that was "suppose" to be Cheesquire . The drawing was most like the copy we have that is "suppose" to be Nathan except it is reversed. Paul wrote a "supposition" because of the likeness, could they be one and the same person?? I refuse to believe that all my relatives who lived in that area at the same time of Cheesquire would not have know their own gg gf lived so near them but was known by another name. He was not named a chief in any of the NC history books. The monument was placed to Cheesquire many years after his death as an honor to him. It was placed by a couple of local Cherokee Co. men. I had a copy of the article that was written in the Graham? Co. newspaper. Only God knows where it is now. In one of these many boxes would be my guess. Please let me know how you come in this line. There has been some confusion about the message posted by Joyce Reece. Monroe and McMinn share many of the same families, but some of you are thinking the Chancery records are Monroe but they're actually McMinn's Chancery records, these are the ones Joyce is referring to and stated such, but it is easy to assume that when the message was posted to Monroe Co.'s mailing lists that it was Monroe Co. Records. However Joyce is the one who rounded up the great volunteers who worked on the Monroe Co. Deeds to get them up, so I don't want anyone to be disappointed when you don't see Monroe Chancery records go up. Monroe's oldest chancery records are really great but they're loose papers. Boyer abstracted these years ago in book form, and we do have look-up people for those. Lynn McConkey abstracted the newer records, but as of now we can't post those either. But we can do a look-up. We (meaning everyone researching in this area) need a volunteer. I have been given permission to copy and use the Chancery Court Records Name index for McMinn County. The document is 426 pages long and is too detailed to make the attempt to post the entire document on the internet. The job is too massive for us to handle.........so we will attempt to do this: I will choose two or three VERY DEDICATED volunteers and send them copies of this index. A link for the person (S) doing the lookups will be placed on the McMinn and Monroe Tenn. Gen. Web. sites. When a lookup is requested you would provide the info included. The name index is cross-referenced according to case numbers. There are thousands of names in this index and by accessing the index with the names of the people involved it could lead a person to getting copies of the court record itself. Please do not make a decision to volunteer lightly. This is something that will be needed indefinately....even to the point of passing it along to another dedicated volunteer when the time comes. This may not be related to Cedar Grove Church. I grew up in Monroe Co. (Tellico Plains) and there were several Dye's, Burrell's, and Hayes. I don't recall any Thomasson. I do seem to recall a Cedar Grove Baptist Church nearby. Many of the small churches did not have individual cemeteries. You might wish to contact Lynne McConkey the county archivist who knows just about everything about county. Send her mail to courthouse building, Madisonville, TN. Also I had a classmate named Dye (1951) at Tellico Plains. I believe her father was Frank and mother was Nettie. There was also a Ulyssis Dye as I recall. I will probably see her in a month or so and she does not research but has a pretty good personal knowledge of the Dye family.
