As a Memorial Day tribute, I've scanned and uploaded to "Kinfolks in the Knobs" a photo of Prospect Methodist Church in McMinn CO, TN as well as transcribed and uploaded a copy of the church/cemetery deed. Also, I've scanned and uploaded photos of my great-great-great-great-grandparents' tombstones located in the cemetery. My ancestor James C. Baker, Sr. was the first person interred in this cemetery. He and his wife Nancy Jane Baker were church members. Their descendants spread far and wide -- to Fannin CO, TX and Delaware CO, OK. Some, like my direct-line ancestors, remained in Tennessee, the land they loved so dearly. To avoid some of Rootsweb's pop-up adds, etc., go to the following direct URL for Prospect Church: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~snipper/kinfolks/prospect.html For the Baker tombstones, go to the following URL http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~snipper/kinfolks/bakerjcnjstones.h tml To find what's new on my websites, go to the following URL http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~snipper/new.html Happy Memorial Day! http://www.tngennet.org/monroe/monobit.htm On our main page you'll find the link to a new project for "Monroe Co. Obit Index: 1946-2002". There are fewer obits for the years leading up to 1994. Please read the cover page well, it has instructions for obit look-ups. There are really more new ones than older ones of which Glenn has been doing. The index has been split into 10 parts. It is very important that you read the instructions to save lots of time and confusion. My sister, Dede Harrill will be doing this immense job and like all our volunteers, is doing this in her spare time, so please be patient! This link has been added to our main page for now. I am reposting again in the hopes of breaking down a wall on William Houston LORANCE. Quite a few sources state that he was born in Monroe County in 1825. One source gave me a father for William as Joseph LORANCE, but I have no tie-in as yet. At some point before 1847, he moved to Bradley County, where he enlisted for the War with Mexico in Cleveland. The name may have been spelled Lowrance at one time. I also know that he married Mary M. (Hill) Owens, of Sweetwater, but the marriage took place in Missouri. She was first married to Joseph Marshall Owen, also of Sweetwater, in 1849. Thanks for any info in advance. Dawn-Moree Dugan

I just wanted to let everyone know how the McMinn County ALHN Site was doing. It's been an amazing month to say the least. As of 8am we've had over 960 visitors to our index page. We've added lots of new material to the site including a search engine. Every day seems to bring more ideas and information. In the last few days I've put up several links including the 1820 pension database link to Lineages.com, the WWII honors list, and several other major spots. We've also added more maps (on their own page), Native American Links and African American links, a reunion list, a list of Church/Cemetery Decoration Days, recent deaths from local newspapers, and started the cemetery index online and so much more. We're always looking for more links and information to add to this site. If you've got a page that you'd like linked to us let us know. Even if you don't have a page but do have information to be put on let us know. We'll put it on and give you the credit you deserve. I'm looking for information on the Church/Cemetery Decoration/Dinner on the grounds days. There are so many churches that I don't have that information for. Let me know so I can add it to the page. Also let me know if I've missed any churches. It's hard to keep track of them and I don't want to miss any. I'm also looking for someone to send me the names from their local paper in the South East Tennessee Area. I'm trying to put the name, age, town (plus place of death if different) and paper name. I'm covering Athens but need someone for Bradley County, Polk County, Loudon County, Monroe County, Roane County and any other paper that would have the info we need. You can send it in by the week or by the day. Just let me know if you would like to help with this project. It'll be an ongoing project but if we work together it won't be so hard. Also the site will accept obits with a McMinn/Southeast Tennessee connection. There are so many connections between our counties it would really be hard to stop at just information about McMinn. Thanks to everyone who is making this site such a success. Come an Visit-- You are always welcome in McMin County Our TEnnessee Home! I have updated the Democrat obit page again thanks to Glenn's work. In file 4, you'll find these: Mrs. Dred Williams W.L. Hamilton reunion Barney Martin Norwood Mrs. Hannah Leanna Brown William Williams - a great biography! James M. Malone File 5 has these: Rebecca Elizabeth Miller widow of Dr. Louis Miller-a great biography! Mrs. (Robert) Grace Hargis Sharp Joe White A reminder that when I add more of these obits, on the index, I add a *1, *2 etc. to show they've been done and you can look in the respective files for the obits.
