    1. [TNMONROE-L] website update
    2. Shane S.Ratledge
    3. Since my last website update to the list, I've added four photos, two wills, five obituaries, ten family groups, and revised or updated twenty-two previously existing family groups already online. These were added to "Kinfolks in the Knobs," "Appalachian Ancestors," or "Valley River Relatives." The Hammontree families have been added to "Appalachian Ancestors." I've been to MO and OK to locate places where my ancestors migrated and taken photos of their resting places. I'll be adding these photo links as time permits. To find the new things added or revised during the month of June, go to the following direct URL http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~snipper/new.html Hope you enjoy! Happy Fourth of July, Sandra Ratledge

    3. This is a note of thanks and appreciation to Joy L., Edith W., Glen T., Don C., and all the other wonderful Monroe County volunteers who make the Monroe County, TN Homepage of TN Gen Web rich with information and so clearly organized, alphabetized, easy to access, and free of frills. I'm always finding something new and returning to check on various things. So, I appreciate being able to return and find that data in the same place. It's a time-saver for me. As you might guess, I've visited a number of homepages on the net. I think Monroe County is the best. How gratifying for Monroe County to exemplify best the "Volunteer Spirit" that won our home its nickname over 191 years ago! It's encouraging to see that inherited spirit truly alive and well today and not just in reference to football. Sandra Ratledge

    3. I know a lot of you are upset with me for the cross-postings yesterday mad I apologize. The posts I made were for FREE lookups at Ancestral Findings an I felt that they were just too good to let go down the drain. <smile> >From now on, I will only be making topic or area-specific postings to each List. I will no longer contribute to the "general genealogy lists" to avoid cross postings. I send with Outlook Express to a group as it is very time consuming to send individually. Also, when my crystal ball is not working properly <laughter> I do not know which ones of you are on multiple Lists. Respectfully, Conniesue --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 1. [TNMONROE-L] Free Lookup--"Veterans' Schedules: U.S. Selected States, 1890"
    2. connie mead
    3. >From Ancestral Findings: "Veterans' Schedules: U.S. Selected States, 1890" =========================================================== Veteran's schedules were forms that the census takers had with them when they were taking the regular population count. In 1890, these extra veterans' schedules were meant only to record information about Union soldiers and their widows. However, many census takers also recorded information about Confederate soldiers, as well as soldiers who served in different wars, including the War of 1812 and the Mexican- American War. You should note that these veterans' schedules are often used as a partial substitute for the 1890 federal census, because the federal government's copy was destroyed by fire. Fragments of the 1890 census may exist in state and local repositories throughout the U.S., but they are difficult to locate and not complete. While not listing everyone who would have been included in the 1890 census, the veterans' schedules are a partial head-of-household list for those who were old enough to have served in the Union Army during the Civil War. States represented include AL, D.C. IL, KY, LA, MD, ME, MI, MS, MT, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NM, NV, OK, OR, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, VT, WA, WI, WV, and WY. In addition, there are a few records from the states of CA, CT, DE, FL, GA, ID, IN, KS, MA, NY, OH, and PA. 3. >From Ancestral Findings: "Military Records: Confederate Soldiers, 1861-1865" =========================================================== This database contains the complete index of the National Archives microfilm roll number M918, Register of Confederate Soldiers, Sailors, and Citizens Who Died in Federal Prisons and Military Hospitals in the North 1861-1865. The collection includes the names of approximately 25,000 individuals. After the Civil War, federal law did not provide for the burial or marking of graves for Confederate soldiers who died in the North. At the turn of the century, however, Confederate veterans' groups convinced the government to pass a statute that provided for the appropriate marking of these graves. As part of the project, the government compiled the 665-page register.
