This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: CAWOOD, FORD, MADDEN Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/2hB.2ACI/113.3.1.1 Message Board Post: Don't know that I can help much more with the limited amount of information I have on hand. Will check with our local Archives and see if the Meigs Co. Heritage book has anything about these families - long shot! One other resource - I have the TN Centennial books that list both Confederate and Union forces, and a second volume which gives histories of various battalions. Many of the MADDEN surname, but no James, in the Union Army. Under the CAWOOD spelling, there are: Andrew J., F.M., J.J., Thomas, Pvt, 1st K Co., 3rd (Lillard's) Infantry; CAWOOD: Thomas Pvt. E. Co., 63rd Inf. - Confederate Forces. The one listed in 3rd Infantry sounds promising, as this bunch formed in Knoxville, TN, 29 May 1861. Like so many units on both sides, when two or more were decimated by deaths from wounds or disease, they were pulled together under a different title. Co. K. was pulled from what had been Co. H., which was basically comprised of men from Monroe Co. There was also a Co. I,! also known as Lillard's, and they grouped in Meigs. If interested in seeing what they have on hand, send request for info to the TN State Library and Archives, 403 Seventh Ave. North, Nashville, TN 37243-0312. Enclose either money order or check for $5.00. Not much of the Confederate records survived, but the pay chits give some idea of where the people were at any given time. Though considered traitors, and not granted pensions immediately following the war, some were later awarded pensions by either the State or the US Government. Long list of FORD's to sort through, and time is limited. I would also be tempted to check with AR State Libray & Archives to see if James D. MADDEN,(MADEN) might have served from there. It might explain why Sarah Ann was back living with her father in 1880, though it is unusual to see one with children revert to maiden name - which could also be an error on the enumerator's part. James could have died in the CW, and Sarah Ann decided to head back to Meigs Co. Will keep an eye out for the surnames you are researching. On the FORD family, one item of possibly "slim" interest was written in their Centennial history. It records the Pedigree Chart of one John FORD, came from VA to Grassy Cove in 1801, m. Elizabeth ENGLAND. Cumberland was not formed until 1855 from portions of Bledsoe, Fentress, Morgan, Putnam, RHEA, and White Co.'s. There could well be a connection lurking here, if this FORD was living in that part removed from Rhea Co. NEAR the portion removed to form Meigs. I hope this hasn't confused you!!!!!
