Jacob W SMITH Birth Date: 1826 Occupation: House Carpenter 1870 Census Research: <salter@gci.net> Friday Decmber 31st,1999 Subject Smith Family On the fifth day of December,1869,13 people having issued letters of dismission from other baptist Churches,petitioned the elders of Yellow Creek,Sulphur(Rhea)Springs,Bethel,and Hinds Valley churches to meet with them at Privett springs in Rhea County,where they were constituted into a Missionary Baptist Church of Christ.The Presbytery were Asa Newport,Johnathon Chastain,and James johnson.The 13 Charter Members were :Temperance McCalpin,Frances McCalpin,Catherine McCalpin,Turner Robertson,Nancy Robertson,Jacob Smith,Sirena Smith,A.C.Owens,Emaline Owens,Lucinda Owens,Frances Robertson,and Martha E.Ownes. They called themselves the Privett Springs Baptist Church of Christ.The abstract of priciples and rules of decorum were those adopted by the Hiwassee Association in 1823.Asa Newport was elected Moderator in december,1869,along with A.C.Owens as Church Clerk.In July 1871,they chose William smith and william Ward as Deacons. A long write up is included in the Rhea County Churches and school Black Book published by the Rhea County Historical and Genealogical Society in 1992.You might also check with edna Clack who does a lot of work with the churches of Rhea County and Asa Newport (her relative)in particular.her web site is http://members.aol.com/woodchippy/index.htm In 1860 he is listed as being 25 yoa,with a wife named Jane who is 19 yoa. In 1870 lists him in Rhea County census at 44 yoa,with his wife Zerena who is 31 yoa. in 1875 he is listed in the tax rolls:J.W.Smith-- tax $2.00 District #4 in 1900 Census of Meigs County lists him again as a Carpenter.he has a new wife and says they have been married 23 years,her name is Lucinda. Forest GroveCemetery is where he appears to be buried,its location 4 1/2 miles from Decatur on the West Side of the River north of Sewee Creek.Jacob W Smith is the only 1 of 2 markers you can still read.
