I've found one lady from that time period who had five- Mary Ann Adeana Mae Bell Eddington. It's hard to say what happened.

I copied this information from the 1880 census ( I believe it to be Meigs Co.) John H. Stokes 52, Emerce 24, Maryline 24, Caroline 19, Martha 12, Charles 11. Is this the family you are researching? I don't know if they tie into my Stokes' or not.

(some say TN) but I really don't think he was married more than one time. He married Martha on 12-9-1852. He was 24 when he married her and I have visited their grave sites and there is no other woman buried close to them that would indicate more than one marriage.
