This email may be too late. For the last few days the hotmail.msn and the .msn list addresses are bouncing again. It is occurring everywhere. Most, if not all, addresses are bouncing the rootsweb mail. I would strongly advise anyone who wishes to continue to receive rootsweb mail from your selected lists to set up an alternative address with another server. The other alternative is to ride it out and resubscribe at a later date. We don't know how long this will continue as hotmail/msn is refusing to admit the problem is occurring and is their problem. If it were rootsweb's problem it would be bouncing from many other servers as well...and it isn't. If you have questions please contact me at the name of the list plus -admin@rootsweb.com i.e. SE-TN-L-admin@rootsweb.com Joyce Gaston Reece, list manager
According to "Meigs County, TN Census and Marriage Records 1850 through 1900" there is no James or John Matthews/Mathis/Mathers/Mathes in the 1870 census. I don't know what other info you have, but it appears to me that your John C(1850) and the James C in 1880 Meigs county are not the same person. Yes, James does live next to Talton, but so does Lindley. I would say Lindley and James C are brothers, and probably John is their brother also. Lindley has named his son Talton. James C named his son William E., apparently after Lindley's step son William E. Cash. James' wife Margaret is 25 in 1880, that would make her 13 when Harriet was born. Harriet is living with her grandfather Talton. If James and John were the same person, why wouldn't Harriet be living there? I would say they were still in Roan county until after 1870. Only Mathews marriage in Meigs is Linzy Mathews to Martha Cash in 1878 and that is a second marriage. You might want to look for the death of John C Mathews in Roan County. Find Talton in 1870 and see if Harriet is living with him then, it will narrow down the search for John's death. I would appreciate help finding a James C. MATTHEWS or a John C. MATTHEWS on the 1870 census. I am trying to verify his given name. In 1850 he is John C. and in 1880 he James C. He is on the 1850 Roane Co as a 10 year old living with his parents Talton and Rhoda MATTHEWS. On the 1880 Meigs Co census he is 36 years old living next to his parents. The right James C. or John C. would have a dau. named Harriet abt. 3 years old in 1870. This surname is often spelled MATHIS, MATHEWS, etc. Your assistance would be appreciated.
