The co-hosts of the American Local History Network web site are proud to announce the latest upload to our McMinn County Tennessee Home web site. The 1836 Tax Lists (which includes the 1829, 1830 and 1831 information) has been uploaded. This information is among some of our county's earliest records. The actual tax list is a bit large and may take a couple of minutes to download. Thanks so much to Judy Brown and Kamy Gamble for their very welcome help with this project. www.rootsweb.com/~tnmcmin2 Please follow the "records and links" page to "M", alphabetically. The only person with the last name "Pace" found in the 1850 Rhea County, TN census is as follows: Hardy Pace, 72 born in NC, listed as a hatter and living in the household of Solomon Henry. In the McMinn County, TN cemetery book are listed Jack A Pace, b 9/28/1921, d. 11/30/95 and Pauline M. Pace, b. 2/5/1922 and are buried in Green Hill Cemetery on Highway 411 south of Etowah, TN. In Cedar Grove Cemetery in Athens, TN is buried Ruby Malone Pace, b. 12/29/1920 d. 10/30/1949. I did not find any "Pace" names in the 1880 Monroe, McMinn or Monroe County, TN census. The only other mention of the Pace name in any resourses that I have is in the book, "Meigs County, TN and It's People, 1836-1997" and it is found in artilce # 563 entitled "Jane Wear and David Wilson." In the last paragraph of the article it states as follows: "John Wilford Wilson went to Texas in 1884 and married in 1891 in Garland, Dallas Co. TX. to Nancy Susan Pace." None of these may be related to your Pace line but is sent in case there could be a connection.

Something still isn't adding up here. I DID find a Willliam BUTLER, age 2 , living in the home of a William MULER, 56, wife Margarett, 57 in McMinn Co., 179-27. I don't have spare minutes to do further digging at this point, but will try to get back with some other info after Christmas. You did not indicate how old Rachel and Isaac were in the 1860 Census, which I don't have transcribed access to. That might help - if it is even in the ball park of being right!

Since Carter and Washington counties are so close I assume that the John Watson who married Rachel Robertson in Carter county in 1850 is the same couple in 1860 Washington county census.

He married Martha Price in 1854 in McMinn and divorced in 1857 (I have no record of the divorce but have been told by other researchers, still need to check this out). Isaac married Rachel Watson in 1857 in Meigs co. The 1860 census has them with Betsy Ann (age 11, 1849) and William (age 8, 1852). The death cert of the William in 1919 indicates age about 73 years (1846) so he could be this William but that is speculation at this time. There was a William Price (age 28) and family living next dwelling to Isaac and Rachel Butler in the 1880 McMinn Co. census. I have not found Martha Price or Rachel Watson in the 1850 census of McMinn and surrounding counties nor previous marriages that I think match them until you spotted the WATSON and ROBERTSON marriage. That is a good possibility. I do find a Dorcy Price age 54 with wife Mary 55, Rachel 23, Henry 25, Martha 13, James 12, and Betsy Ann age 2 in 1850 Meigs Co. TN. This is the closest I have come to spotting a possibility. All of my family tell me that Rachel was over 100 years old when she died. In old inverviews with her grandaughters they indicate that she was indian and spot "broken" English. Of course lots of folks claim indian blood but have no proof. I am in the process of trying to get a death certificate on her. A search of the 1928/29/30 death index has not proven successful yet. My next request will be for 1931/32/33. Thanks so much for responding and I will follow up on that Watson Robertson marriage. That may be a good lead.

It would appear that it is not, if this is the same William listed as age 8 in the 1860 Census. The way this is listed, with Rachel BUTLER listed as mother of William, PRICE, I wonder if this might indicate a possible second marriage for BOTH Isaac and Rachel? Using the 1860 Census, William was born before the marriage of Isaac and Rachel, so are we looking for a family other than WATSON for Rachel? A John WATSON m. a Rachel ROBERTSON, 1 Dec 1850 in Carter Co. and is the only Rachel to WATSON marriage among extant E. TN records, as transcribed by Sistler. Its a long shot, but might be a possible path. Another point of interest - Isaac, 18, is listed in the home of Allen and Rachel BUTLER in the 1850 Census. Interesting that the William who died in 1919, age 73 - if that is correct, c! ould possibly be the son of this couple. He would have been about 14 in 1850, and possibly living with other family members as a farm hand or apprentice. Isaac m. Martha PRICE, 1854. Have you found HER in her parents home prior to the marriage? This still gives the probability of parentage of both Betsey Ann and William questionable, since Betsey was 11 in 1860, thus b. ca 1849, and William, age 8, b. ca 1852. Isaac would have had to be about 16 or so to have been parent of Betsey. It also puts doubt on that 1850 marriage of Rachel ROBERTSON to a Watson previously cited. Hope I haven't "muddied" the water even more.

The 1860 census has two children living with Isaac and Rachel, Betsy Ann age 11 and William age 8. A Wm M. Price age abt 73 died in 1919 with Rachel Butler listed as mother. Who were the parents of Betsy Ann and William? Isaac was living with his parents in McMinn co. in 1850.
After some hard work by some great people we have part of the McMinn Co Marriages online at http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnmcmin2/links.htm Look under McMinn Co Marriage Licenses. This is the way they are on the book Rex Moses has put together at the McMinn County Historical Society. There are quite a few missing but given time we hope to fill in all the missing information. This information we hope will be a great assistance to all with a McMinn Co (or neighboring cos) heritage. Come and visit the site. Good Hunting and Happy Holidays! If b. 1818, and stood by the usual rule of waiting until 21 to marry so no one had to sign permission, and men could own property, he would have married ca 1839/40. This was also the period of time when many wagon trains headed out of E. TN and other areas, heading for greener pastures in MO. What were the names of his children, sons in particular? This may give clues to look for here in TN.
Hi, I don't know if this will heal your search but here goes anyway. Several months back we were researching in Rhea County (next door to Meigs) trying to learn the origin of the name of the Emory River there. (we descend from Emory's). Anyway while researching we found Edgmond/Edgeman etc. researchers who had done some fairly extensive work. I don't have their addresses but I am sure they could be reached via www.tngenweb.org/meigs or www.tngenweb.org/rhea Joyce Gaston Reece ----- Original Message ----- From: To: TNMEIGS-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, December 05, 2003 12:42 AM Subject: [{Meigs Co., TN}] Thomas K.
