    3. Larry, Since I do not know your email address I have to send this to the mailing list. Thank's for sending the info from the "The History of Meigs County" "Rhea County, TN Census, Marriage and Tax Records 1850-1900:" On the Hammel - Hammonds - Hammond surnames. Hopefully I can locate more on the James Hammond that married Mary Brocke, in Rhea Co Mar30, 1871. Although Mary Brocke could not be my grandmother this could "possibly" be my grandfather and his 1st wife who knows. At least you have given me something to work with. My father's brother William who was born in 1905 list his place of birth a Spring City,TN in Rhea Co. Once again Thank's for the info ! Regards, Pat

    3. From The History of Meigs County, in the paragraph about James and Sarah Ford. Their daughter Patricia(b. 1938) married Gray Hammonds and they live in Canton, GA. From Tennessee Cousins; "Members of the Walker family who married in Knox County" Amanda W. Walker to Henry Hammell Jun 19, 1834. From Rhea County, TN Census, Marriage and Tax Records 1850-1900: Marriages: James Hammond to Mary Brocke, Mar30, 1871(same), W>B> Henry JP, 1-#1191 Hope this helps some. 3. Hello, Kay, welcome. I am the admin for the mail list...but not the message board. Mr. Edward Brown has that. I live just across the 'border' in McMinn County and mangage the ALHN site for McMinn along with Sharon McCormack. I can understand what a job you have taken on. Thank you and I hope you have much success. I also manage the southeast Tennessee mail list which is pretty active so if I can help please let me know. I'll tell you this much. These lists have some of the absolute best volunteers in the world so if you have a major project in mind that will benefit the web site it can quite often be done via these volunteers. Good luck. Surnames: ELDRIDGE, MATLOCK, SHAMBLIN Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/2hB.2ACI/127.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Nailed John B. in Rhea Co. in my 1850 statewide. Will use this as a base to work from. The MATLOCK family is prominent in this area also. On that bunch, it appears that Jason, b. VA, 18 Jly 1769, d. Roane Co., 29 Nov 1848 - first wife not identified in Wells, "History of Roane Co.," c1928, but he had two sons of that union - James and Moore. He m. second, Mary Miller,b. 1783 - d. 2 Aug 1859. They had Absolom, Jane, Malinda, Amanda, Ann, Eveline and Louisa. So, it would appear that Louisa might be a repeated family name. The gentleman who wrote up the article for the "Roane Heritage" book on the family in general, unfortunately died of cancer about 18 months ago. I don't have bunches of references for Rhea, but I DO have abstracts of Deeds. In Deed Book E., dated 29 Jly 1829 0 Registered 17 Sept 1830, Charles MATLOCK of McMinn Co. to Daniel McPHERSON of Rhea Co., for $200.00, 120 Acres in the Hiwassee District, being part of the SE 1/2 section 2, T 1, R 2 W, bounded b! y a conditional linemade betwen William MATLOCK and Daniel McPHERSON. Witnesses: Wm Matlock, James Caroll and Barton McPHERSON. I have done in depth studes of the McPHERSON bunch. Daniel was a Rev. War Soldier, wife Susannah Kincheloe, who settled below modern Rockwood almost on the Roane/Rhea Co. line. His eldest son, Alexander Barton McP, bought land in the Hiwassee District across the TN River - actually just barely in what is now Meigs Co., TN. When they were elderly, Barton moved his parents to a small log cabin on his property, and when they died, he took them back across the river to inter them in what was probably called the McPHERSON Cemetery. Back in the 1930's, Daniel's grave, and that of his son, Henry, were both visibly marked, but when TVA decided to build Watts Bar and embayment of that area started, a survey was done in case graves might have to be removed, etc. At that time, there were indications of some 60 unmarked graves, 1 ABSTON, 4 CLARK, Daniel and Henry McP, a NARRAMORE and a SCOTT. Now nothing is marked, but it is kept mowed, and at least no one has built a house on the ! site!!!! The above doesn't help that much, but the fact that John and Melinda named their oldest son of record William might be a tie in. Their are close ties between old Roane, Rhea and Meigs. I will see what I can find in the next few days. Don't know if I mentioned, but I broke my "pinky" toe on my right foot two days before Christmas, while moving some furniture in my usual barefoot fashion. I did manage to get a shoe on Thursday, long enough to go get a haircut. Maybe I can move about a bit more this next week or so, and come up with more answers. Another clue to watch out for - MATLOCK is also found spelled MEDLOCK. Double checked the 1830 Census for this area. No ELDRIDGE living in Rhea Co., bunches in Roane, and a few in Overton, which I believe we can probably rule out. John B. was b. ca 1812/1813, and would have been about 23 when he married Lorinda/Lorinda, and she would have been ca 16. Jesse ELDRIDGE had a son between 20 & 30 in Roane. Moore MATLOCK was nice enough to make a Will, dated May 1842, but h only names son John, James, Absolum, his "wife", and balance of property to be sold at death of wife, eually divided among other children. That helps lot! I have other resources I can check. Will get back to this later.

Surnames: ELDRIDGE, SHAMBLIN, SHANBLIN Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/2hB.2ACI/127.1 Message Board Post: Don't know that I can resolve your question completely, but will try to atttack this one from the ELDRIDGE side of the equation. Everyone in this part of the country is descended from Simeon ELDRIGE, Rev. War soldier, b. 1758 in Frederick Co., VA, s/o Thomas and Cathran or "Katy" TAYLOR ELDRIDGE. Simeon m. Mary BRITTAIN in Guilford Co., NC, d/o William BRITTAIN. Thos. Eldridge was b. ca 1740 - d. after 1810 in Knox Co., TN, at the home of a daughter, so several generations migrated in this direction.Simeon and family wandered around the area including Roane, Rhea, back to Roane to that part now known as Loudon, Loudon Co. - formed in 1870 from Roane, Monroe, and Blount. He finally wound up in McMin Co., dying there 11 June 1851. His children are listed: Benjamin, Thomas, Elizabeth, Nancy, possibly others not identified, and all b. 1700's, and marrying early 1800's. The one that has the most emphasis is Benjamin, s/o Simeon, served in War of 1812, m. Martha "Patsey" Jack! son, 7 Feb 1815, Roane Co. They had 4 children: John Harrison, Simeon who never married, James B. who also never married, and Susan Fuqua who m. a John Taliaferro JONES. Benjamin m. 2. Rebecca Middleton, 14 Sept 1847 in McMinn Co. - 2 more children Theresa who m. a BOYD, and Martha "Mattie" Eliza who m. Joe Smith in McMinn Co. There are no direct connections here for Louisa Ann, but she is bound to have come down through one of the lines from Thomas or Simeon's sons. The SHAMBLIN name is found in Meigs, Sevier, Polk,& McMinn Counties. With a SHAMLIN spelling, we have Meigs and Roane, in the state wide 1850 Census. The latter may hold a clue. Since this couple was married in Meigs, and Meigs abuts Roane, it may be the link that is missing. The alternative view - since Columbus W. d. in Knox Co., the couple may well have lived in that part of Roane that became Loudon in 1870. Roane and Knox Co. shared a line, and there was much interaction of families between Roane and the extreme southern edge of Knox. Maybe a post to the Knox and Loudon Co. sites would stir some activity up on these two surnames. A George Washington SHAMBLIN, age 76, b. McMinn Co., father Jesse SHAMBLIN, mother Ellen FORGEE, both parents b. TN, died in Meigs Co. in 1922, according to the dc abstracts done by Cleveland Public Library. He would have been b. ca 1846. He is probably the s/o the John 38, Hollen, 37, with siblings James, 11; Joel, 9; William, 7; George, 3; found McMinn 1255/626 in 1850. Nowhere do I find a Columbus W., of about 11 years in the 1850 Census as transcribed by Sistler. Books DO have errors, but usually not two ommissions. Any other clues to be found? Did Columbus d. in Knoxville as a Civil War participant? Aha! That is the answer - He is listed in the Union forces, as Columbus W. SHANBLIN, , Pvt. E. Co., E Co., 5th Inf. Have you tried to retrieve a Widow's pension for Louisa, which would pay to support her daughter until maturity or marriage, even if Louisa married again? This is cited from, "Tennesseans in the Civil War", Civil War Centennial Commission, Nashville, T! N, c1965.
