Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/2hB.2ACI/134.1 Message Board Post: Peg White Sulfsted gave you very good information. Luckily, Grizzle and Hardbarger are not a common names. Dallas Texas is in Dallas Co., In looking at this in usgenweb the National Archives are in Fort Worth Texas, and the Dallas Public Library, both claim to have federal records. What you need to look for is: Military Records - Confederate Pensions Confederates did not receive Pensions until 1890s. Then they received a pension from the state they resided. Grizzle Widow if still alive probably applied for a pension from Texas. You need the soldier's information at least the name, and unit would be good. There will be an index with soldiers names with their units, and the pension number#. With this information you can send for a copy of the pension file. I would try to go to the web sites of the Archives or public library. Some times researchers are listed. They might charge a fee, but it is much cheaper than traveling there. The information in the pension files are very good and can be a goldmine of genealogy information. Many widows will even try to claim their grandchildren as dependents. Also the archives or library websites may have a form for you to send in with the fee, and the pension #. Good luck. Sincerely, Barbara Long

    2. Checked two Civil War personnel databases and found this man in both--seemed a likely match as he had the same initial as the child and he was the only soldier in a Tennessee unit. William H. Grizzle Union  enlistment rank: Priv State served: TN Survived War         Grizzle, William H. Union Co B, 1st Regiment, Tennessee Independent Vidette Cavalry ------------------------------------------------------------------------ One database lists only four Harbargers--two Union from IN and two Confederate with one in a GA unit and the other: Hardbarger, William Confederate Co K, 16th Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry (Logwood's) The other database does not have TN Confederate service yet posted. Find many more Grizzles in another Index of Tennessee Civil War Soldiers at http://www.researchonline.net/tncw/page5.htm Also Harbargers. Elizabeth would be eligible for a pension as the widow of a soldier even if her husband died after the war. When does she appear as a widow? She might be found in the 1890 Special Census if it was before that date. Not all widows were counted whether remarried or not has been my finding. Could Elizabeth be Sarah's mother? What is Elizabeth's birth date? Posting all three census records you found might be more enlightening. Good luck, Peg White Sulfsted

Surnames: Grizzle/Cotton/Hardbarger Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/2hB.2ACI/134 Message Board Post: I am looking for anyone that may have knowledge of a connection between William GRIZZLE b abt 1829 TN, his wife Elizabeth COTTON b. abt 1931 AL and the Hardbarger Families of Civil War Years TN. The 1870 Census, Decatur, Meigs Co, TN Lists: Elizabeth GRISSELL, her sons George age 16 and Harrison age 12 included in the household are: Sarah HARDBARGER b 1851 TN, and her 2 year old son, William H.b 1868 TN. As this is Post Civil War Era and Elizabeth is later reported as a widow, I am thinking Sarah (may be Grizzle) and Elizabeth may be sisters in law trying to survive. William and Elizabeth GRIZZLE were in Chattanooga for the 1860 census. Sometime during the war years Elizabeth moves to Meigs Co. When Liz migrates to Dallas TX by the 1880 census, there also appears a young William Grizzle, the same age as this Wm Hardbarger. Coincidence....Maybe...... I am having lots of trouuble trying to locate any records on these folks. Does anyone have any ideas how I can attack this ??????? THANK-YOU in advance for taking the time to read this and any help you may lend my way.

His name was Jeptha M. HAWKINS. I have reason to believe that he was born in Forsthe, Georgia. I have over 275 pages of Jeptha’s Civil War records and I find W. D. HAWKINS mentioned in a few places. Jeptha was born around 1828 and died 2/7/1911 in Fannin County, Georgia. In the papers it mentioned David’s wife as a witness. She states that David abandoned his family and is rumored to be in Cherokee County, NC. Jeptha’s first wife Angeline died 8/15/1888 in Mineral Bluff, Fannin County, Georgia. In the 1880 Census of District 10, Polk County, Tennessee the family has the following children: Flora A., John D., Lou E. (which is my great grandmother and her death certificate lists her name as, Martha Lou Ellen HAWKINS-MASON), Jeptha M. and Amanda E.
