Johnita, Don't know who John STATON is, but don't think he was a CASE family member. On the census it says he was a laborer, and his birthplace is unknown. As far as I know, he didn't accompany the members of the CASE family who moved to Polk Co. in 1852. Apparently, he was a "hired hand" to help Thomas CASE with his farm, as Thomas had four girls, and no boys at that time. He just might be related to your husband's STATON's.
