Today you would take I-40. That is also one of the early trails used by our ancestors to get to the Knoxville area from NC then to middle Tennessee. The French Broad River runs roughly form Ashville to Knoxville. The Little Tennessee and the Hiawassee River also cuts through the Mountains from NC to TN.
