Appeared in the Independent Appeal Newspaper, Wed., July 20, 2005 BOBBY JAMES JONES, age 72, died June 28, 2005, at Mary Immaculate Hospital in New Port News, VA, where he has lived for 45 years. James was born and raised in Selmer, McNairy County, TN on New Bethel Road. He entered the United States Army in 1953, from where he retired as Sergeant First Class with 21 years of dedicated service. He traveled to many places, Vietnam being one place where he received the Bronze Star. He worked the next 27 years as a truck driver, and this past year as a door greeter for Wal-Mart. He was the son of the late Buford and Verble Jones, and was also preceded in death by his daughter, Norma Robertson of Adamsville, TN and a son-in-law, Jeff Marx of New Port News. He leaves his wife, Betty L. Jones; two daughters, Vickie Wilburn of Adamsville, TN and Rhonda Marx of New Port News; one son, James D. Jones of Williamsburg; three step-children, Bobby, Darlene McKenney, and Debra Kellum; two sisters, Martha Ann Carlin and husband, Allen, and Betty Bodiford and husband, Larry; twelve grandchildren and five gr-grandchildren. Services were July 3rd, at Weymouth Funeral Home and conducted by his son, James D. Jones. Burial was in Hampton Veterans Cemetery with full Military Honors. .............. HEAVEN MICHELLE BYRD, 21, of Selmer, TN, passed away on July 16, 2005, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-East in Memphis, TN. She was a student. Heaven is survived by her mother, Cindy Byrd Hernandez of Selmer; her father, William Westbrooks of Selmer; grandparents, Ruby Byrd, Sue Butler, and Ray Butler, all of Ramer, TN; three brothers, Tony Westbrooks of Selmer, Steve Westbrooks of Bethel Springs, TN, and Chuck Westbrooks of Selmer; two sisters-in-law, Tina and Patricia Westbrooks; nieces, nephews, and her friends. Services were at 1 p.m. on Tues., July 19th, at the Shackelford Funeral Home in Selmer with Clifford Wynn officiating. Burial followed in Indian Creek Cemetery near Ramer. Funeral services for JAMES ROBERT SMITH, age 76, of Bethel Springs, TN, will be Thurs., July 21, 2005 at 1 p.m. at New Bethel United Methodist Church. Mr. Smith passed away on Saturday morning, July 16, 2005, at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. Mr. Smith was a retired railroad worker and a lifelong resident of McNairy County. He was a member of New Bethel United Methodist Church in Bethel Springs. The pastor, Minister Jimmy Carter, will officiate the service and burial will follow in the Bethel Springs Cemetery. MILLARD ASHE, 84, of Adamsville, TN, passed away on July 16, 2005, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-East. He was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church and a retired farmer. Mr. Ashe was preceded in death by his parents, John and Patie Hawkins Ashe; and his wife, Davie Lee Plunk Ashe. He is survived by two daughters, Janet Weaver of Oakland, TN and Charlotte Ashe of Adamsville; two sisters, Ruby Davis of Selmer, TN and Bessie Woods of Memphis, TN; two brothers, J. D. Ashe and W. C. Ashe of Adamsville; two grandchildren, Chad Weaver of Taylorsville, KY, and Angela Wade of Oakland, TN; and four gr-grandchildren, Brock Weaver, Marissa Weaver, Austin Wade and Tucker Wade. Services were at 3 p.m. on Tues., July 19th at Good Hope Baptist Church with Lauren Locke and Billy Joe Stewart officiating. Burial followed in Good Hope Cemetery in Adamsville. He was a member of World of Truth Church in Ramer, TN, coached the youth basketball team and was an employee of ThyssenKrupp in Middleton, TN. Mr. Nevarro was preceded in death by his father, Miguel Nevarro, Sr.; paternal grandparents, Preston and Leonor Nevarro; maternal grandparents, Ignacio and Concepcion Flores; and one brother-in-law, Stan Hendrix. He is survived by his mother, Jesusa Nevarro of San Angelo, TX; his wife, Donna Lynn Nevarro; one step-daughter, April Nethery of Paducah, KY; two step-sons, Micah and Matthew Nethery of Paducah, KY; three sisters, Mary Mills and husband, Kevin, of Corinth, MS, Emily Mills of Corinth, MS, and Linda Nevarro of San Angelo; four brothers, Juan and Jerry Nevarro of San Angelo, Mike Nevarro and wife, Lisa, of Corinth, MS, and Leroy Nevarro and wife, Jennifer of Corinth; mother-in-law, Sue Hendrix of Paducah; two sisters-in-law, Vonda Powers of Paducah and Cindi Shepard ow West Paducah; seven step-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. RUTH MAE JONES BARNES, 96, of Selmer, TN, passed away on July 13, 2005, at McNairy Regional Hospital in Selmer. She was a member of Selmer Primitive Baptist Church and a homemaker. Mrs. Barnes was preceded in death by her parents, Franklin Asbury and Tennessee Prather Jones; two sisters, Bonnie Jones and Clarice Hamm; and five brothers, Lee, Burton, Wilford, Thomas, and Bryan Jones. She is survived by her husband, Finis Buford Barnes; one daughter, Doris Barnes Dickinson of Florence, SC; and one son, William W. Barnes of Huntsville, AL. Services were at 1 p.m. on Sat., July 16th, at Shackelford Funeral Home in Selmer with burial in Falcon Cemetery in Selmer. The husband of Brenda Cartwright Martin, who survives, he was a retired timber cutter. He was born on Dec. 5, 1958, in Covington, son of the late Jerry and Ruth King Martin and lived most of his life in McNairy and Hardeman Counties. He was an avid collector of Native American artifacts and also studied, promoted, and paid tribute to Native Americans' and their way of life. In addition to his wife, whom he married on Dec. 28, 1980, survivors include three daughters, Melissa Martin, LaTosha Martin, and Tiffeny Martin, all of Pocahontas; a step-son, Joshua Bartholemew of Pocahontas; three sisters, Sherry Monroe, Talleluh Martin and Ellon Martin, all of Selmer; and two grandchildren, Jacob Warren and Jack Watkins. He was preceded in death by a brother, Avery Huckabee. .............. GLENN EUGENE GOWDY, JR., 55, of Saulsbury, TN died Tuesday afternoon July 12, 2005 at Bolivar General Hospital. The husband of Shirley Ann Howell Gowdy, whom he married Aug. 31, 1974, he was an avid sports card collector and fisherman. Born May 18, 1950, to the late Glenn Eugene Gowdy, Sr., and Mary Margaret Reed Gowdy, who survives, he was retired from Western Mental Health Institute where he had been a psychiatric technician and recreational therapist for 24 years. He had lived here since 1963 and was a member of the Abundant Life Christian Fellowship Church. Services were Fri., July 15th, at Shackelford's Bolivar Chapel with Duane Moore officiating. Burial was in Bolivar Memorial Cemetery. Including his wife Shirley and mother Mary Gowdy of Stantonville, TN he is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Ann Coleman of Saulsbury; three sons, Christopher Eugene and Terrance Wayne Gowdy of Saulsbury and Johnny Ray Gowdy of Bolivar; three sisters, Peggy Sue Jones of Stantonville, Brenda Doles of Selmer, and Lois Jean Gowdy of Huntingdon, TN; one brother, Bennie Neal Gowdy of Toone, TN; and one grandchild.
