Appeared in the Independent Appeal Newspaper July 14, 2004 DOVIE LOUISE BALLARD, 91, died Wed., July 7, 2004 at the Home Place in Nettleton, MS, after and extended illness. She was born Sept. 9, 1912, in Selmer to the late Winfred and Ruby Moore Taylor. She lived most of her life in Tupelo and worked as a supervisor in the garment manufacturing industry. She enjoyed gardening, ceramics, crocheting, and was well know for her crocheted snowflakes. She was Presbyterian and attended the First Baptist Church in Tupelo. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Fri., July 9th in the Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues in Tupelo with Rev. Johnny Cox and Rev. Scott Witcher officiating. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park in Verona, MS. Survivors include one daughter, Joan Bennett and her husband Charlie of Nettleton; two sons, James N. Ballard, Jr. and his wife Margaret,of Verona, and William E. "Billy" Ballard of Plantersville, MS; eight grandchildren, Barbara Benson and her husband Randy of Shannon, MS, Debbie Bowen and her husband Leslie of Okolona, MS, Janice Martin and her husband Mitch of Nettleton, Susan Ward of Belden, MS, and Jeff Ballard and Jason Ballard, both of Tupelo, Brian Ballard and his wife Elizabeth of Raleigh, NC, and Cindy Davis of Plantersville; nine gr-grandchildren and seven gr-gr-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Nash Ballard Sr. in 1998; her brothers, Lessie, Aulcy, Elihu, C. D. and Parvin Taylor; and her sister, Desda Braneky. Pallbearers were Brian Ballard, Leslie Bowen, Lance Bowen, Shane Bowen, Derrick Bowen, and Charlie Bennett. .................. T. K. PAGE of Ramer, 84, died on July 6, 2004 at McNairy County Health Care Center in Selmer. Mr. Page was a member of Gravel Hill Baptist Church. He was retired from Pickwick Electric, and was married for 59 years. He is survived by his wife, Bessie Lee Jones Page; two sons, W. C. Page and wife Sharon of Ramer, and Jimmy Thomas Page and wife Gail of Virginia Beach, VA; a sister, Mae Mitchell of Corinth; and a granddaughter, Angel McClanan of Virginia Beach, VA. Services were held at 11 a.m. on Fri., July 9th at Shackelford Funeral Home Chapel with Maurice Pinkston and Ron Carlson officiating. Burial followed at Gravel Hill Cemetery in Eastview. .................. DOROTHY LAYTON of Jackson, 61 died on July 9, 2004 at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. Miss Layton was a pre-press manager for The Jackson Sun. She had received her B. A. from Lambuth University. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edford Layton and Maynell Layton Blakney. She is survived by two sisters, Kathryn Layton and Betty Hines, both of Memphis; a nephew, Garrett Hines of Memphis; and two nieces, Melissa Hines and Jessica Hines, both of Memphis. She was a retired Licensed Practical Nurse. She was also a member of Michie First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie D. Wardlow. She is survived by a half-sister, Mary Jewell Garmany of Atlanta. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Sun., July 11th at Shackelford Funeral Directors of Acton with Brian Rainey officiating. Burial followed at Michie Cemetery in Michie. .................. BONNIE MARIE WARD CUPPLES of Memphis, formerly of Finger, 85, died on July 11, 2004 at St. Frances Nursing Home in Memphis. She was born and reared in Finger the daughter of the late John Gilbert and Minnie Freydona Hunter Ward. She attended schools in Finger and graduated Bethel Springs High School. She was married to James Elmo Cupples in 1942. Mr. Cupples was in the U. S. Army and they moved to Arizona for 5 years, they returned to the Finger Community and then moved to Memphis, where Mr. Cupples worked for the Illinois Central Railroad. She was a homemaker. Mr. Cupples died in 1988. Mrs. Cupples was an avid gardener, having one of the most beautiful yards in Memphis. She was a member of the Keenagers Choir at Union Ave. Baptist Church. She was a den mother for the Cub Scouts. She loved sewing, especially clothing. She is survived by a son, Douglas Cupples of Bartlett; a daughter, Donna Derden of Plano, TX; a sister, Mary Orell Webb of Memphis; five grandchildren, Nic, Virginia, and Christiana Cupples, Michael and Shawn Davis; and two gr-grandchildren, Ethan Cupples and Pierce Davis. Services were held at 2 p.m. on Tues., July 13th at Casey Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Mike Lumpkin officiating. Burial followed at Finger Cemetery. HAZEL WHITTEN HUGHES of Selmer, living in Portland, OR, 89, died on July 6, 2004 at Reedwood Extended Care Center. Mrs. Hughes was a retired seamstress. She was also a faithful member of Bethlehem Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Enloe and Ruthie Lee; two husbands, Julius Whitten and Lee Hughes; three sisters, Georgia Cagle, Mildred Cobb and Glylis Stewart; a brother, Wilson Lee; and an infant daughter Whitten. She is survived by a step-daughter, Glenda Balentine of Portland, OR; a son, Charles Whitten of Portland, OR; two brothers, Leon Lee and Rayburn Lee, both of Henderson; a daughter-in-law, Sylvia Whitten of Portland, OR; and three grandchildren, Doug Whitten, Ken Whitten, and Randy Whitten, all of Portland, OR. Mrs. Taylor was a cashier for Wal-Mart in Selmer. She was also a faithful member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Selmer. She is survived by her husband, Varnell Taylor; a daughter, Marilyn Plunk and husband Mike, of Bethel Springs; a son, Greg Taylor of Jackson; two sisters, Dorothy Annette Street of Chelsea, AL and Jean McMillian of Farmerville, LA; and two grandchildren, Clint and Layne Pierce. He is survived by his parents, Wyatt Earl Landreth of Adamsville and Terra White Michael of Ramer; a half-sister, April Morris of Walnut Grove; his paternal grandparents, Bud and Merle Landreth of Adamsville; and his maternal grandmother, Josie White of Enville.
