All are invited to attend the January 19th, 7:00 PM meeting of the Hardin County Historical Society at the Hardin County Library. We look forward to seeing you there. David Cagle, President Hardin County Historical Society _______________________________________________________________________ MISSISSIPPI AUTHOR TO SPEAK AT LIBRARY Noted Mississippi author, David Williamson, Ph.D., will address the Hardin County Historical Society, and the Shiloh Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, at a joint meeting on Thursday evening, January 19. The site is the Historical Society's usual meeting place in the Con Welch Room at the Hardin County Library; time is 7 p.m. Interested persons may attend free of charge. Williamson is author of "The Third Battalion Mississippi Infantry and the 45th Mississippi Regiment." He will speak about the book's subject, and how he came to research and write about it. County history buffs will be interested in his presentation because it was the Third Mississippi Battalion that opened the Battle of Shiloh in a pre-dawn firefight with a Union reconnaissance patrol at Fraley Field. Dr. Williamson is a graduate of the University of Akron, OH, and earned his Ph.D. in sociology at Tulane University, LA. He taught at several southern universities before retiring to live with his wife, Brenda, in Hattiesburg, MS. At some point he learned that both he and Brenda had ancestors who fought on opposite sides in the Civil War, indeed were in units that were directly opposed at the Battle of Franklin, TN. The current book is about Brenda's ancestor's unit. Williamson also will be at the bookstore at Shiloh National Military Park from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 21, to sign copies of his book. Copies will be available for sale at the bookstore (and at the library Thursday evening, when he will also sign copies).
