Hi Jane and Randle: I have been researching info about my ggrandfather, ALEXANDER JAMES LEWIS, of McNairy and Hardin Counties and about his involvement in the Civil War under Col. Fielding Hurst's 6th TN Calvary. My sister and her husband have been helping me also. They live in NC. Here is a book that they found through Interlibrary Loan from the Winston-Salem Public Library: Gary Blankenship, "Colonel Fielding Hurst and the Hurst Nation," West Tennessee Historical Society Papers 34 (1980): 71-87. Some more book titles they found at the Wake Forest University Library where Jim is a Professor are: "The Reluctant Confederates" by Daniel W. Crofts (WFU call #E459.C92 1989)- which mentions Col. Fielding Hurst and his 6th TN. (A Confederate officer, Forrest, called them "renegade Tennesseans" but, we have read where this officer Forrest was a vicious and violent officer who wanted no prisoners, and also that he and his soldiers were the start of the Ku Klux Klan ?-that may be just a rumor, don't know for sure). "The Union Calvary in the Civil War" by Stephen Z. Starr (WFU call #E492.5.S7) Some places you can search on the Internet: "The Civil War comes to Hardin County" http://.www.centuryinter.net/nacent/bs/war.htm "6th TN Cav Regt" http://www.centuryinter.net/nacent/bs/6thtn.htm; gives a listing of Col. Fielding Hurst and the officers, and where each section was organized. "Shiloh, Civil War" http://www.centuryinter.net/nacent/bs.shiloh.htm News articles re: Shiloh & Savannah, TN (the above URL but instead of shiloh, add news.htm Civil War companies by county: Same URL except change to units.btm Salltillo, TN, change to saltillo.htm I hope these are helpful to you.
