PURDY HISTORICAL CALENDER PICTURES CHOSEN The pictures have been chosen for the second Purdy Historical Calendar. One of projects of the Purdy Ruritan Club is to preserve the history of McNairy County’s first county seat, Purdy. This is being done partly with the historical calendar of pictures of Purdy’s past. Some of the pictures are very rare and have various dates from about 1880 to 1960. Many Purdy families are represented in this calendar and it is filled from front to back cover. Included are: Dony McNatt Sanders and part of her family: Catherine Evans Sanders, Verlene, John T, Elsie Day Brooks, Murray Sanders and three children. Picture probably made late 1940's. Wagoner relatives made July 1920. Includes Joseph & Harriet Jopling Wagoner and their children, Eulah, Will and Ed, along with all their children. Benjamin Harwell and wife Ellen (Winnie) Lewter. He is the son of early pioneer Richard Harwell S and Catherine Watterson of mixed ancestry. Picture taken in 1870's. Family and relatives of Virgil & Lessie Henson Murray made 1949. Includes Inman, Henson, Cupples, Maness and Plunk. Children of James A and Mollie J Sutton Hill, taken 1962. Willie Hill, Beulah Pounds, Maggie Garner, Minnie Wolverton, Frank Hill, Lena Barnes. Three generations of Johnson’s. Bryant Johnson, killed in the civil war, Mike Johnson, the fiddler, and John Robert Johnson. A picture by the Pete Smallwood house has Dadie Brooks, Leonia Brroks Johnson, Lynn Books Hill, Shirley Tacker Plunk and Madine Brooks Inman. Made about 1940. The graduating class of 1931 of Purdy and their drama program. Council Bias, Lula Belle Tapp, Floyd Wright, James E Hamilton, Marie Thomas, Louise French, Enloe Wagoner, Maurice Needham. People that left Purdy in the 1890's. Clarence Hunnicutt, John Hunnicutt, Andrew Oliver, Merritt Kindel, Mattie May, E H Kindell, Bertie Kindel, Ida Baldridge, Jennie Hunnicutt, Roy Carlisle, Charles Kindel and others unknown. Tom Garner and his dog in 1955, at age 81, The Purdy School Class of 1937/38. About 35 students. The family of Connia and Parilee Bias and Smallwood made about 1915. Children include Connie, Pony, Francis, Ludie, Sudie Holmes, Roy Holmes. Also Rosa Smallwood Plunk and Vallie Bias. The Holmes Grocery owned by R L and Betty Holmes. Some pictures of the 1986 Homecoming at the Dodds house with Lamar Alexander. Has the older citizens at that time.
