McNairy County Independent (Friday, 23 June 1922) More Interesting History We have had the recent pleasure of visiting in the home of the late Capt. E. J. Hodges and wife. Those constituting the family now and at home are Dr. W. H. Harmon, Margie and Harvey. We found the doctor much improved in health, and Harvey's condition is improving. While on the visit we were made acquainted with some very interesting facts in connection with the family. Capt. E. J. Hodges, the father, was born in this county in 1831 and died in 1913, his wife survived him, together with a number of sons and daughters, and Mrs. Hodges followed him only a few months ago. The father of Capt. Hodges, Elisha, came to this county in 1818 from Wilson county and settled in the community where stands the Hodges residence. Elisha Hodges was born in 1794 and his wife in 1790. They had the following children: Jesse C. born 1815, Tabitha, born in 1820, Jno E. C., born in 1823, Elisha W. R., born in 1825, E. J. born in 1831, and Henry, born in 1832. When Elisha Hodges settled in the 8th district, the nearest house was 10 miles, and there were no roads, only trails being used in going from one settlement to another. The nearest mill was at Jackson, and the red man roamed the forests at will. Bears and deer and other wild game abounded in the primeval woods. When Elisha Hodges came in this county, the State was only 22 years of age, and only 42 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. James Monroe was president, and Henry Clay and Daniel Webster were in their prime. Purdy was not thought of, and W. D. Jopling, "the old red fox" had not been born. The whistle of the locomotive had never been heard and a sulphur match had never been struck. Capt. Hodges married Jane Dodd in 1852, and the following children were born in this union: Francis, Sarah Ann, Elizabeth Ellen, John, Mary, Horry, Henry, Harmon, Jennie, Maggie and Harvey. The father of this interesting family was a prominent figure in the affairs and history of this county. He possessed a rugged and wonderful character: a man of strong convictions and sublime faith and courage. He was a leader in his community, and was an able and influential minister in the Primitive Baptist church, living up to the tenets of that faith. During the great fratricidal struggle of the 60's he was a captain in the famous Hurst's Sixth Tennessee Federal Cavalry. Jerry

On further examination of the writings on what is shown of this letter, it appears to me that it was posted from Wm. Wilborne Esquire. I did a lookup of the McNairy Co., census of 1840 and found a William Wilbourne (also a Lewis Willbourn).. Texas doesn't show an index on Ancestry.com for 1840, but I found a Sarah B. Barret in Nacogdoches Co., TX. (very close to Marshall TX., in San Augustine County) on the 1850 census. She was 59 years old, born in VA., with two males in the home: John Baret 31 born in VA., Lyars Baret 19 born in VA., and one young female, Elizabeth Ealantz? age 8 born in TX. Another Sarah Barret is found in this same county in 1850, but she was only 2 years old and the letter is said to be dated 1845 (three years before she was born). I also found tow Barrett household's listed in McNairy Co., in 1840: Nathan Barrett and William Barrett. Hope this helps someone if they are connected to any of these parties. In the middle thirties, when radio was new and cars scarce, his ministry was well known in Alabama and parts of Mississippi through his daily radio broadcasts featuring his singing family and his message of Salvation. Because of gas rationing, yet the availability of air fuel, he purchased an airplane, got his pilot's license and became known as "The Flying Parson". His radio work, the GMC bus, big-top tent, and plane provided the unique ministry slogan, "The Gospel on Wheels, On the Air, and In the Air". Health problems curtailed his evangelistic ministry, and he then went into church planting and pastoral duties for several churches before coming to Tennessee in 1961 to pastor Mt. Gilead Baptist Church for the next 27 years. He continued to preach following his retirement and held many int erim pastorates. During these years, he served in many capacities in the Shiloh Area Baptist Association, member of Union University Pastor's Conference, and was a charter member of the McNairy County Hospital Chaplin's Associate where he served for 30 years. McNairy County Independent, 11 Feb 1921 Veteran Visits Selmer. Jim Haynes of the 14th district, and member of Phillip's Legion of Georgia Cavalry, and one of the leading citizens of the county, spent Monday night in Selmer, as a guest of the editor of the Independent. He gave us many chapters of unwritten history. No soldier who followed the flag of the Lost Cause can unfold a more interesting narrative. He was in the awful slaughter of the 2nd Manassas, and saw the forces of McClellan stop the mighty rush of the northern march of Lee at Antietam. He fought in the Wilderness, and helped to make the conditions that brought forth from the immortal Grant the undying declaration, "I propose to fight it out on this line if it takes all summer!" He felt the earth shake when the mines under Petersburg exploded, and rushed with his comrades into the "Battle of the Crater." He was with the command that got within three miles of Washington. He was with Stewart's Division when the Confederate entire forces around Richmond and Petersburg numbered only 36,000 men, surrounded by an invincible Federal army numbering 280,000 men and reaching in its circuit down into North Carolina. He was a Gettysburg, the real decisive battle of the Civil War, and hea! rd the shouts of the Confederate soldiers under the dashing Pickett in the charge which made him immortal. Several days after the battle of Gettysburg, Gen. Dan Sickles, who had lost a leg, was carried into the presence of the great Lincoln at the White House, when the General gave in detail the history of the fight. The President replied that he had assurance of that victory in prayer before the fight began. Mr. Haynes can give more authentic history of the Civil War in three hours than can be obtained from some of the histories in three weeks. He is 81 years old, hale and hearty, and we wish him many years more of happiness and usefulness.
