For Those Who May Be Interested, I have posted information on two Harris Reunions to be held this summer. One is for the 45th Annual James David Harris Family which will be held at Shreveport, Louisiana on June 17th, 18th, and 19th, 2005. The other is for the Gideon Lindsey Harris Family Reunion which will be meeting at Adamsville, Tennessee on August 13th & 14th, 2005. James David Harris (1871-1938) is my great-grandfather, and Gideon Lindsey Harris (1813-1896) is another ancestor. These families all descend from Capt. Thomas Harris (ca. 1586-1658) of Jamestown, VA and eventually ended up in McNairy County, Tennessee, where many descendants still live.. Here are the web sites: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gohrpage/JDHarrisReunion2005.html http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gohrpage/TNHarrisReunion2005.html Any and all Harris descendants of any branch are welcome to participate in these reunions. There is always over 100 people at the James David Harris Reunion, and usually at least 50 or more at the Tennessee Reunion. --Glenn Gohr

--------------020203060905020308040307 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=windows-1252; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Those of you with early Virginia kin will be interested in this new offering on the Virginia Dept of Transportation's website. These documents record some of the early VA road orders... "The establishment and maintenance of public roads were among the most important functions of the county court during the colonial period in Virginia. Each road was opened and maintained by an overseer (or surveyor) of the highways, who was appointed each year by the Gentlemen Justices. The overseer was usually assigned all the able-bodied men (the "Labouring Male Tithables") living on or near the road. These laborers then furnished their own tools, wagons, and teams and were required to work on the roads for six days each year." "County court records relating to roads and transportation are collectively known as "road orders." The Virginia Transportation Research Council's published volumes of road orders and related materials contain not only information on early roads, but also the names of inhabitants who lived and worked along the roadways, plantations, farms, landmarks, landforms, and bodies of water." "Much of this information is found nowhere else in early records, making these publications invaluable not only to historical and cultural resource research, but also to other disciplines, including social history, preservation planning, environmental science, and genealogy." Cantrell and Mrs. J. T. Warren of Selmer. She was buried today at Shiloh. The community joins in the loss of this estimable woman. Hello, Does anyone know if this refers to Lenoir W. Cantrell's wife? His dates, if my info is correct, were 1827 - 1903. However, I list only one wife, Mary Eliza, who died in 1854. Was there a second wife? Thanks! Linda
Are there any obits or information going back to late 1883-1884? I have a great-grandfather, Henry Eugene Kiser, who died in late 1883 or early 1884, and we have not been able to find anything on him. We have no info that ties us to the other Kiser/Kizer families in McNairy Co. As far as we know, Henry E. Kiser was married to Eliza A. James and they had children: Dennie Austin, born Jan. 1876; Charles Miller, born 21 Nov. 1879; a daughter Adeline, possibly born 1881; and a daughter Nettie A., born Feb. 1884. According to family stories, G-G Kiser died either 2 months before or after Net was born. Eliza is on the 1870 and 1880 censuses of McNairy Co., and then is in Massac County, Illinois, in 1900. From there she comes with children and their spouses to Lincoln County, Nebraska. We have no information on Adeline, except that she was married, had children, but died sometime after 1900. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thank you. Penny Koch
I would also like to thank Jerry. Although I have not come across any relatives yet, I do appreciate the time and effort he is putting into posting these. Rondina P. Muncy Grapevine, Texas
I second that! Really appreciate the info Jerry has shared with the list. Thus far I have not found any of my husband's lines from that area but I'm hoping 'one of these days' he will come up with something I really need. Thanks! Death notices, death mentions and obits from the 1903 McNairy County Independent. Friday, 30 January 1903. McNairy County Independent. Sad Death. Lessie May, the three year old daughter of Mrs. Anna Hester, daughter of L. A. Lockman of the 2nd district, was drowned in a creek near her home about eight miles west of Selmer Wednesday. The little girl is supposed to have followed a dog with which she had been playing to the back water of the creek and stumbled into a deep hole and before assistance arrived was drowned. Friday, 6 February 1903. McNairy County Independent. To The Memory Of Mrs. B. F. Darby. The home of B. F. Darby has been saddened by the death of his devoted wife. She was born in South Carolina 65 years ago, was the daughter of W. M. Prather, one of the staunch farmers of McNairy county. She became a member of the Pleasant Grove Methodist church at the age of fourteen and lived a member thereof till death. She became the wife of B. F. Darby at the age of sixteen. Her husband and seven children survive her. Mrs. Darby was esteemed for her noble christian traits and will ever be remembered by her neighbors, to whom she so often ministered in time of sickness, sadness and death. Her husband cannot soon forget her devoted life, her sweet smiles and her lovely Christian character. Her children will ever think of her as the best woman who has ever yet lived, and the counsel of her sweet life will ever be a strength in overcoming the evil temptations of life. Such a life, suc! h a character will not, cannot die. Though her body lies in the silent churchyard at old Pleasant Grove, the life she lived, the examples she set, the character she builded, stand as perpetual reminders to her husband, children, grand-children and her innumerable host of friends that she still lives, and in their fond remembrance, will never die; but will ever think: There is no death, The stars go down on a farther shore, And in heaven's brightest jewel crown, And will shine forever more. One of the Children. Friday, 6 February 1903. McNairy County Independent. Bethel Springs. Mrs. Mary, wife of Clark Ethridge, died Wednesday morning. She had spoken to her son Prince of not resting well the night before but said she was not feeling sick. Born Mary Archer, 45 years ago, she was married to Clark Etheridge while yet in her teens and has borne him eleven children of whom three are grown. Reared in the Christian church faith, she lived to see her adult children following their parents' footsteps. The cause assigned for her death is heart failure as she was never known to have any disease from her childhood. Mrs. Etheridge was passing from one house to the other about her morning work when she fell. Her husband sprang to her aid but she died in a few minutes without rallying. The funeral is from the Presbyterian church to the cemetery at this place, the sermon to be preached by the pastor at Refuge, where she held her membership. The hour set, 12 noon Thursday, is peculiarly appropri! ate, for it was at noon of life that she was taken. Friday, 6 February 1903. McNairy County Independent. Dr. J. W. Flatt Dead. Dr. J. W. Flatt, of Stantonville, died at his home Thursday night, January 27th, age 47 years. He died suddenly from heart disease. He had recently returned from Hot Springs, Ark, where he had been for his health. He leaves a wife and two children. His remains were buried in the Clear Creek cemetery last Saturday. Dr. Flatt has been prominent in the county for several years as a physician; was a good citizen and his death will be deeply felt in that portion of the county. We tender our sympathies to his bereaved family. Friday, 13 February 1903. McNairy County Independent. Bethel Springs. Miss Lily Lane daughter of Crump Lane, died at 6 p.m. Wednesday, of heart disease aggravated by typhoid fever. The burial is at Mt. Carman. This beautiful girl was beloved by all who knew her and was just out of her twenties. Her loss is a sad blow to her devoted parents. She was an earnest Christian and a regular attendant upon public worship. Friday, 6 March 1903. McNairy County Independent. Joplin. The community was greatly shocked on last Monday night on account of the sad death of Mr. ___ Lain. He leaves a wife and nine children in sadness. He was a faithful member and ruling elder in the Presbyterian church. The church has lost a faithful member; the community a good neighbor and citizen; the wife a devoted husband and the children a kind and loving father. His life has been very useful and he has gone to his reward. A place is vacant in the home that no one can fill. His body was laid to rest in Mt. Carmel cemetery. (Could not read first name) Friday, 6 March 1903. McNairy County Independent. Died. Jeptha Fowlkes, nephew of S. K. Fowlke and brother to Mrs. T. Prather of Ramer, died Wednesday at the home of the latter of consumption. He had only recently returned from Texas where he had been for his health. He was a noble young man and we extend to the bereaved family our condolence. Jerry D Duncan

Jerry is there any obits in the McNairy Independent from 1897 to 1899? thanks you for your time mike laRue
The following are death notices, death mentions and obits from the 1902 McNairy County Independent. Friday, 4 July 1902, McNairy County Independent. Personals: David N. Kerby died at his home in the 3rd district on the 21 of June. Mr. Kerby was a victim of consumption and has been confined for several months. He was well known as an efficient deputy U. S. Marshall. He has many relatives and friends who mourn his death. Friday, 5 Sept 1902, McNairy County Independent. Correspondence, Rose Creek: The funeral services of Jasper Shelton, at Mt. Gilled last Sunday, was attended by the largest crowd we have ever seen at this place. Friday, 5 Sept 1902, McNairy County Independent. Personals: The relatives and friends of Mrs. Laramore, the aged and revered mother of Eld. Laramore and Mrs. R. P. Meeks, deposited her body in Clear Creek Cemetery Wednesday. She was about ninety years old and made her home with Mr. and Mrs. R. P. Meeks, of Henderson. Friday, 10 Oct 1902, McNairy County Independent. Death Doings: The community near Purdy was shocked Saturday morning by the sudden death of Mrs. Robert Wagoner. She was well and jovial all morning and in going out of the premises fell dead by what is supposed heart trouble though she had never had any in that regard. She was an estimable lady and leaves a husband and only one son about 21 years old. Her funeral was attended by a large concourse on Sunday of sympathizers and relatives. Friday, 17 Oct 1902, McNairy County Independent. An Old Pioneer Dead: E. Wooten died at his home of the 10th inst. He was born August 6, 1821. Mr. Wooten was a man of sterling character, living for a great many years in the extreme southwest corner of the county. In days past he from that district frequently served as a juror, and was never set aside by attorneys for reasons objectionable to them. He was a true gentleman of the old school, and has now few survivors in the county. For thirty years we have known him and can pay tribute of respect to his memory that is due an old, true and tried friend. Rest his bones and peace to his memory, with our condolence to his friends, is the humble tribute of. Friday, 24 Oct 1902, McNairy County Independent. Death: H. N. Emmons, after a lingering sickness of several weeks, died Saturday, October 18, 1902, at his home in Selmer. Mr. Emmons leaves a wife, five sons and one daughter, all grown. It has been our privilege to know Mr. Emmons intimately since he moved from his farm in the south part of the county to Selmer, some ten years ago. He was a man of strong convictions and sturdy habits. His was a social and humorous disposition. He looked on the comic and genial side of life. His devotion to his family was first and to his wife the one above all. During his long and wasting illness he was entirely resigned to what he believed to be the result. The often repeated expressions of appreciation of the watchful care and attention of the family and friends were characteristic of his big heart. The end came peacefully with an often expressed faith in his future happiness in the land of rest. The relatives and friends we can onl! y console by advising them to emulate his good qualities and minifying his mistakes. Peace to his bones and rest to his soul in the happy beyond is our final tribute. Jerry D Duncan

I submit the following article: McNairy County Independent, Friday, 19 November 1909 Correspondence, Oklahoma Letter. Idabel, Okla., Nov. 4, '09. Independent: I accidentally, through the accommodation of an old Tennessean that I chanced to meet some time ago, was put in possession of two or three copies of the Independent, which I read with a great deal of interest, for they carried me back to McNairy county to the years of long ago; and in my mind I went back to Prudy and called on most of the old timers. Bill Jopling was sheriff, Carroll Moore jailer. Of the merchants there were Alfred Moore, Jack Duke, Bell & Wisdom, Adam Hall, Stribling Bros. and Nelson Riggs. Dr. Kendal, Dr. Harris and Dr. Barry were the three most prominent doctors of that day; while Cy Jeans, Jack Ray, Dickey Browder and his boys, Sam Brooks, Dunkin Baker, Jack Wagoner, Dave Redding and Bogan Ray were considered the main farmers of the Oxford creek country. These were my happiest days. I was a boy then, and every week old Ned and I would pay McCullar's mill a visit. You will note that old Ned was a big gray horse. Now I have come to something never to be forgotten. On the third morning of May, 1861, the first company of volunteers left Purdy for the great war that was to last four long, weary years and leave desolate our once beautiful country. I will give you the names of all of that company that I can now remember-one or two I have forgotten their given names-if you will publish the roll and see how many will answer the roll. There are about eight or ten whose names I cannot remember. I think there were 114 in the company, all told. We went to Randolph, forty miles above Memphis, on the Mississippi river, and became Co. I, 154th Regiment, Tennessee Volunteers. This regiment was officered by Preston Smith, colonel; Marcus J. Wright, lieutenant-colonel; ____ Martin, major. All three became brigadier generals. Smith was killed at Chickamauga, Martin killed at Corinth. General Bedford Forrest was first a private in this regiment; was elected lieutenant in cavalry; was soon a captain, ! then colonel. From that time on the world knows his history. Luke E. Wright, a mere boy at that time, went through the war with this regiment, serving most of the time as marker and courier; little dreaming at that time that he would one day be governor-general of the Philippine Islands. Since May 15, 1865, the date of my parole, I have been in nine different states, but I find no place that fills the measure like old Tennessee for a TENNESSEAN ABROAD. List of Names of Members of Co. I, 154th Tenn. Regiment who left Purdy, Tenn. on the morning of May 3, 1861: Alfonzo Cross, captain; A. M. Corey, 1st lieutenant; John Cross, 2nd lieutenant; F. D. Moore, 3rd lieutenant: Ned Sanders, orderly sargeant. Private: J. R. Adams, Bill Burkhead, J. K.
