    3. Sandra, I think I may have found John F. & Mary J. TIDWELL in 1880 in Illinois. I forgot that some people did migrate north! Another reason to look more closely at the Union soldiers Ginger found. The only way to know, for sure, is to locate Mary J(ane) in 1860, hopefully with family members in McNairy Co., to compare birthplaces. From a marriage license we have for our ancestor, Isaac Preston, 1869, McNairy Co., to Susan Wilson nee McDonald, the *bride* had to *reside* in the county the license was taken out for or the marriage would be null and void so Mary Jane must've been living there in 1862 for them to marry there. Of course, she could've been living with friends or relatives. Note that Mary J. was born in IL but her father was born in TN & mother in MS. (No TIDWELL's in Illinois in 1880 old enough to be parents of Mary J. so perhaps they only lived there for a time and returned to TN.) If Mary Jane's age is correct, she would've been 14 years old when they married and he 19. If so, they probably had older children so I found one possibility, also listed below. I don't know the geography of the counties, though, so you'd have to take a look at the proximity of Williamson & Union counties to see if this is plausible. 1880 Census Index. Additionally, during WWI, a Blasingame is good friends with the niece of Sherman Hughes Tidwell. I am under the impression that they were living in Corinth. The direct descendant of Harvey and Sherm is away and thus not getting email this week. I will forward this to her in case some of it rings a bell with her. Also, I can't swear by the information above since I don't remember where it came from. I can say that much of it came from the Federal Census records. Plus, the Blankenship connection ties to Sherm's brother in law who is a brother to Eliza P. It could have come from my extensive Blankenship correspondents. Plus Josiah Norwood is a first cousin of Eliza and her brother. It gets all confusing. K. S Lee wrote: > Wow! This is a fantastic list! 3. For Sandra Lee who posted the original query (and anyone else following this thread): I received a lengthy email today in response to the TIDWELL query. I let Shirley know I'm not the one interested in this family and I gave her your email address, Sandra. I hope you're receiving this input as we've not heard anything from you since you posted your query. Regards, Julie Preston juliefpreston@sbcglobal.net ----- Original Message ----- From: S Taylor To: Julie Preston Sent: Friday, December 02, 2005 4:06 PM Subject: Re: Fw: [TNMCNAIR] TIDWELLs Julie - My name is Shirley Chandler Taylor of Yukon, OK. I traveled to Leapwood, McNairy County, TN and the surrounding area, visiting MANY area relatives last summer, who I still keep in touch with. I research my Chandler Family Tree, which my Great-Grandmother was Nancy Ann Tidwell, daughter of James and Sarah Tidwell (married May 19, 1867 in McNairy County, TN). of McNairy County, TN. Here's the info in my geneology book: John Robert Chandler (my Great Grandfather), born June 21, 1876 in Middleton, Tennessee. On January 3, 1897 in McNairy County, Tennessee, he married Nancy Ann Tidwell, born April 9, 1873, in McNairy County Tennessee. John Robert died August 1, 1960 at age 84, in Guthrie, Oklahoma. He grew up in Tennessee. The 1900 Tennessee census revealed him to be a 26 year old with his wife Nancy, son Arnold and his widowed mother-in-law, Sarah J. Tidwell a 64 year old professional nurse, living in Leapwood, McNairy County, Tennessee. Sarah or "Sallie" is the daughter of John and Sarah Carpenter of North Carolina. Eber tells of his mother, Nancy playing a harp. Graple remembers Nancy dipping snuff. Angie tells of the time she was 8 years old, nursing her cancer stricken grandmother Sarah J. Carpenter, who married James F. Tidwell on May 19, 1867 in McNairy County, Tennessee. They died in Leapwood, Tennessee. His parents were born in Georgia. He died a horrible death of rabies after! being bitten by his cow. John moved his family to Decatur County Tennessee around 1910 and then to Luther, Oklahoma in 1918. He retired from farming and has lived in the Guthrie area since 1919. He usually had a small garden with plenty of vegetables during the summer. He also loved to fish and it was not unusual for one of his grandchildren to fish with him on the cottonwood creek, especially after he had cataracts that blurred his vision greatly. He truly enjoyed visiting with his brothers, sisters, children and grandchildren. Nancy Ann died of cancer of the stomach and intestines on November 3, 1931, at age 58, in the home of her daughter, Angie McKenzie, Guthrie, Oklahoma. John and Nancy are buried in the Navina Cemetery. (On May 7, 1933, in Guthrie, Oklahoma, 57 year old John married 60 year old Lillie Dye and they lived together until his death). John and Nancy had 5 children, one (Sally) died in infancy.

    3. Wow! This is a fantastic list! I've received several responses from people with very helpful information! My TIDWELL line has been a very difficult one to trace. I'm trying to connect with any descendants of the following family which appeared in the 1860 McNairy Co, TN, census: 1894 1895 Nelsom M TIDWELL 53 m $75 GA Lucy TIDWELL 49 f VA John F TIDWELL 21 m TN Robt N TIDWELL 16 m TN Francis TIDWELL 12 f TN I am descended through Francis "Fanny " TIDWELL through her only daughter (born out of wedlock), Martha Ann TIDWELL. Fanny never married and I have no idea who Martha Ann's father was, but have searched for a Robert PURDY who might be a possible lead. The only Robert PURDY I could find, never married or had any children. So that was a DEAD END......... Robert N, above, I believe married Elizabeth ROBERTSON , but never had any biological children, however, he did have a stepson that he lived with in later census years. Another dead-end... There is also another possible unidentified son in this familiy that was born between 1835 and 1840 in Giles Co, TN. Since I cannot find the above family in the 1850 census, I have not been able to find any additional information on this possible male son. It is possible he was not longer living in the household in 1860 so ....Another dead-end.... Lastly, as mentioned in my initial email, I cannot seem to find what happened to John F after his marriage to Mary J BLASSINGAME, and I've wondered if he could have been killed in the Civil War, which would lead me to another dead-end. As far as I can tell, the only descendants Nelson TIDWELL had are through his only granddaughter, Martha Ann TIDWELL, which was my great-grandmother. I know I connect to these other McNairy Co, TN, TIDWELLs because Nelson is probably the son of Rhode TIDWELL, though I have no proof. I just keep hoping to find a clue or thread of evidence somewhere that will lead me to other descendants besides those that are descended through Martha Ann TIDWELL. Thanks so much for all your helpfull advise! 1. Re: [TNMCNAIR] TIDWELLs & BLASINGAME
    2. Julie Preston
    3. Sandra, I hope you've seen the postings from Ginger and me regarding the Civil War Soldiers theory. You'd have to send for the individual record to find out what became of a particular soldier. Meanwhile, the 1880 Census shows (3) BLASINGAME households in McNairy Co. Could it be that Mary Jane Tidwell lost her husband and returned to live with her family and was listed under her maiden name inadvertently (1st entry shown)? I suggest you locate all BLASINGAMEs in 1860 & 1870 to figure out which family she came from. If you don't find them in TN in 1870 & 1880, the logical places to look are TX, AR, MO, as many left McNairy Co. after the war. There were a great many TIDWELL families in 1880, McNairy Co., as well, but no one fitting the details you provided. Were you able to find the household of John Tidwell's parents or siblings in 1870 or 1880? Did they stay in McNairy Co.? 1880 Census Index Census Place: District 5, Mc Nairy, Tennessee Source: FHL Film 1255268 National Archives Film T9-1268 Page 71B Relation Sex Marr Race Age Birthplace William BLASINGAME Self M S W 52 AL Occ: Farm Hand Fa: AL Mo: AL Mary Jane BLASINGAME Sister F S W 54 AL Occ: Keeping House Fa: AL Mo: AL Rebecca E. 3. Ginger, Thanks for your search -- it was actually Sandra (sorry, I said Sharon in my email!) who was looking for information on John Tidwell -- I only suggested he may well have been in the war. Sandra -- There are a number of John or J. Tidwells listed in the Confederate records on the site Ginger provided for regiments from Tennessee, as well. Many McNairy Co. men went into the Confederate army with men from Hardin Co., ending up in the 34th Tennessee Infantry (Co. B). I notice there was a 34th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry, which fought with the 34th Tennessee -- also a possibility with McNairy Co. on the border with Mississippi. Also noticed there's a case of a "Tidwell" that may have been mistakenly recorded as "Kidwell" so worth looking for "Kidwell" at the same time while you're searching. 3. Sharon, The Civil War was going on -- have you checked to see if John Tidwell was in the war and perhaps didn't make it home? His wife probably stayed with relatives and may have applied for a pension at some later date and remarried, especially if she had a child, making her 'invisible' by the 1870 Census. Look for her family in the 1860 & 1870 Census and see where they were living (parents, married sisters, etc.), as well as John's family.
