    3. Here is another good source for recent obits if your families live in McNairy, Chester, Hardeman, and Hardin Counties and use Shackelford, Casey, or Leon Johnson Funeral Homes: http://shackelfordfuneraldirectors.com/ These obits are started after the funeral home is notified of the death and are then updated as the information is available from the family. I checked the website this morning and obits appear to go back to late 2004. One has the option of checking by date order or by last name of deceased. 3. Gene, It would be a good vacation. I recommend that you try to get here before the summer crowds. You would be amazed at how many come to DC for genealogical research. Since I live just North of Baltimore, I go down to the archives when I need to. Monday is a good day to go as there are few others except the professionals. You can't take anything at all into the research area (with the exception of loose paper notes, no spirals, no pens, no staples) so remember that. They provide free lockers. You will have to be there to put in your request at the specified time, then you come back to get the records later in the day. They do not do continuous pulls. As far as I know there is no time limit on the items you get, you can have them kept out for you, or at least you can at Archives II. I've never pulled anything downtown. As for your wife, there is so very much to do and see that it takes your breath away. What is she interested in? Art? you are just around the corner from the National Art Museum, which is by the Smithsonian. Essentially, you can walk around the Archives (genealogy entrance is on the back side on Pennsylvania Ave) and be there with the Washington Monument on one end and the Capitol bldg on the other. Absolutely everything is there. The Metro is the best way to get around if you can. It is not like the NY subway. There is an exit right at the genealogy entrance to the Archives. If you don't want to stay in downtown, you can just about pick your place and find a nice hotel close to the Metro. http://www.wmata.com/metrorail/systemmap.cfm something on the Orange line or the Blue line because your stop is Federal Triangle. Actually, have your wife bring her best friend, that way they can go sight seeing or shopping while you don't have to feel rushed in your research to keep her entertained. Then after you've ascertained the identity of said soldier, which I hope goes quickly, go check out Antietam battle field, or go into the I95 corridor of battlefields. Chancellorsville is not far. http://www.civilwar-va.com/virginia/ To give you an idea of drive times, it is just about one hour from the W. Wilson Bridge to Fredericksburg. (great little downtown shopping area and a National Cemetery where the Rebs held their line. I love it plus it is the last stop on the Metro Commuter Rail, so you don't have to drive.) If you don't like the Antiques stuff, go to one of the mega malls between Springfield and F'burg. I recommend Ikea for a fun stop. So, it is entirely possible to make this happen and keep everybody happy. Oh, I recommend that you call the Archives and get the details about what you need to search so you won't waste time getting that all figured out. You have to have the exact number of the volume for them to pull it. Or hire one of the folks listed on the archives site to do the research for you. I like to look at the records myself because I am steeped in the names and stuff so I can see other connections. Besides you need to come see your capitol. Let me know what happens. 3. Julie, Thanks for the reply. I have done my best to search for rosters but can find only bits and pieces and none I have found show either a J.M. Martin or a Jesse Martin Odom. And you can be sure that if I can establish that there really is an error on the marker that a request to replace the marker will be made. Every Confederate soldier deserves a marker but unfortunately so many of them simply disappeared in prison camps. Some northern camps properly buried and marked graves, some bodies were simply thrown into lakes and rivers and it is known that many northern medical schools were well supplied with "cadavers" for their medical "research". The South had its Andersonville but the north had Rock Island, Camp Douglas and Elmira, all terrible. The National Archives has informed me that the surviving records for Rock Island have never been microfilmed and if I want to search them then I will need to go to Washington. Perhaps I can discover the transcription error or oversight , if one was made, when individual Confederate soldier records were originally compiled in the early 1900s. I may wind up doing this if I can convince my wife that this would make a real good interesting vacation. 1. Re: [TNMCNAIRY] Is there a J. M. MARTIN ?
    2. Gene Wade
    3. Glen, Thanks. Unfortunately I believe that the headstone itself is the root of my problem. It is the headstone itself that I believe contains the incorrect (transposed) name. I have found numerous listings showing J. M. Martin but all that I have found use the stone itself as documentation and it is the stone itself that I question. I have a acurate list of the Rock Island headstones but it is well established that many Confederates simply disappearee because of poor recordkeeping, accidental/purposeful destruction of records and simply unrecorded deaths. What I am trying to find is a different source that there was a J.M. Martin other than the headstone. Even a special letter to the National Archives indicate no record of J.M. Odom other than the headstone. Since even the archives themselves say there is history of numerous other errors on the headstones I suspect the grave itself contains Jesse Martin Odom. Since Co B, 27th Tennessee likely contained no more than several hundred soldiers the coincidence of the names make me suspicious. Also since th archives say then have no other record, other than the headstone, that there was a J.M. Odom. I do have a quandry. Although we normally believe the information on a headstone to be properly documentation, in this case I believe it to be suspect. The movement of Jesse Martin Odom at time of capture and several times on his movement to Rock Island and since, if there really was a J.M. Martin and since he would have been captured at the same time as a member of Co B, 27th Tenn, it seems that there would have been at lease one record of his capture and movement to Rock Island,---probably on the same documents showing Jesse Martin Odom. Of course, nothing is sure except death, taxes and lost branches of our family tree.. 3. Gene, If the Muster Rolls for Jesse Martin Odom's company have survived and the records of the U.S. Army for prisoners who died at Rock Island, both may show the same date of death and you can get them to change the marker. Regards, Julie Preston juliefpreston@sbcglobal.net ----- Original Message ----- From: Gene Wade To: TNMCNAIR-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, March 30, 2006 10:04 PM Subject: [TNMCNAIRY] Is there a J. Martin is listed in the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors system but the only record the federal archives has is a single record stating that there is a tombstone at the Rock Island Camp with that name on it. MARTIN was inscribed instead of the correct name of Jesse Martin ODOM. It's not too hard to realize how the name could have been recorded incorrectly by someone in a hurry. The Jesse Martin ODOM I am seeking was indeed with Co B, 27th Tennessee Infantry (note same unit as shown for J.M. Martin) and according to federal archives records was captured at Missionary Ridge and transported to Rock Island on Dec 8, 1863. Then Jesse Martin ODOM seems to have disappeared after a Dec 25, 1863 Rock Island prisoner roll, never to return to his wife and seven children. Strange request I know but I need to determine if there really was a J. M. Martin before I can really assume and hope that this relative Jesse Martin ODOM received a decent burial instead of being thrown in the river or something. Is J.M. MARTIN really my Jesse Martin ODOM.? Did the Rock Island camp in error "manufacture" a non-existent person and bury a real Confederate in a mismarked grave? Any help or suggestions are appreciated. PVT B 27 TENN 2/14/64 Burial: Rock Island Confederate Prison Rock Island Rock Island County Illinois, USA Plot: Grave # 490 Record added: Jul 18 2004 By: Bev Gillihan The transcriber says he died Jan. 14, 1864, but the inscription looks like it says Feb. 14, 1864. 2. findagrave is compiled by volunteers. They cannot just go through other people's books and websites to make the additions. Volunteers must enter them individually. I have entered most of my family graves that I am certain about. I have even had to add some cemeteries that had never been listed. In our little town in Montana, we have 2 cemeteries which I added with photos of some of the graves. I occasionally go out and take photos of the older graves to add--even though none are related to me. It is a great site. They allow you to add photos of the grave, the person, the cemetery. They also allow a small biography. Another good feature is that my email is associated with each of my entries. If some distant relative finds a grave I listed, that person can contact me easily. I encourage everyone to add their family graves. Honey

    2. IF you are lucky. I've tried several I couldn't find but did find a great uncle because he was/is in a national cemetery in San Francisco. Think they are trying to add to it but is a slow prcess. Most luck if you can find the cemetery listed that they are in, Don't know why findagrave doesn't just add those to the list, too easy I guess 1st On Thu, 23 Mar 2006 18:30:50 -0600 "Bill and Gail Langevin" <bglangevin@frontiernet.net> writes: > How about Find A Grave? http://www.findagrave.com/index.html > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: <TNMCNAIR-D-request@rootsweb.com> > To: <TNMCNAIR-D@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Thursday, March 23, 2006 6:00 PM > Subject: TNMCNAIR-D Digest V06 #10 > > > > ==== TNMCNAIR Mailing List ==== > USGenWeb Archives > http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ > > ============================== > Search Family and Local Histories for stories about your family and > the > areas they lived. 3. Do you know who Cain Lowrance's father was? A Daniel and Abram Lowrance came to the northern part of McNairy County about 1824. The Lowrance families in McNairy County today are probably all related.. One of the sons of Daniel was Peter O Lowrance. He and his family were early settler of Kerrville, Texas. In the 1840 McNairy County Census transcribed by Albert Brown, it shows O I Lowrance age 30-40 and his wife the same age. One male 0-5; two males 10-15, one female 0-5, one female 10-15. I think one of Abram Lowrance daughyter's married into the Plunk family. There was a lot of people that came together to Mcnairy County before 1830. The Plunk's and the Loarances use a lot of the same male names. Could they have connections further back. Nancy Kennedy
