    3. See this passage from Bolivar's website: Long before the white settler came, the Chickasaw Indians used the river crossing Hatchee. In their language it means river. Hatchee Town was used as a stopping point from 1818 until 18 October 1825 when the permanent site for Bolivar was established. The Commissioners appointed by the State Assembly to select sites for county seats in the Western District named Bolivar in honor of the South American liberator, Simon Bolivar. See this link: http://www.cityofbolivar.info/ It appears that some state-level bureaucrats came up with the name for Bolivar. Maybe some other committee named (or renamed) all of the state's locations in the early 1800's. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Agnews" <agnews2@cox.net> To: <tnmcnair@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 03, 2006 12:35 AM Subject: Re: [TNMCNAIR] Spanish place names > This question about the Spanish names is one that I have pondered since I > have been researching Buena Vista Church. > > Also the little community of Montezuma, which is now in Chester County, > was > in McNairy County until the formation of Chester County in 1880s. > However, > Montezuma was said to have been started in the 1820s. 3. Cerro Gordo and Saltillo were renamed about 1849. Cerro Gordo was originally know as Hardin's Ferry after Col. James Hardin who died in 1826, then Whites Ferry after John White who died in 1845. Saltillo also had several names before settling on that name. 3. In 1820 when Hardeman was still part of Hardin Co., records refer to the "Polk Settlement" on the Hatchee. That Polk would be Ezekiel Polk, grandfather of the president, who's son-in-law was Hardeman. 3. This question about the Spanish names is one that I have pondered since I have been researching Buena Vista Church. Also the little community of Montezuma, which is now in Chester County, was in McNairy County until the formation of Chester County in 1880s. However, Montezuma was said to have been started in the 1820s. I don't know how long the name Saltillo or Cerro Gordo have been in use but I would expect that since they are on the river that they likely pre-date the war. Also Bolivar (in Hardeman County) named after Venezuelan liberator, Simon Bolivar pre-date the war. Of all these the only one that is for sure named after the war is Buena Vista. I am still hoping to find some "Spanish connection" to an early member of the church. 3. Hello, I am writing to ask for help from anyone with information related to Buena Vista Methodist Church near Bethel Springs, in McNairy County. I am trying to pull together some historical information about the church for the upcoming 150th anniversary in 2008. I am looking for information, personal stories or recollections, pictures of the church or the people, newspaper articles referencing the church, any documents associated with the church, or anything else that might be helpful. I have been to the library at Lambeth in Jackson to check for conference references and I have been to the library in Selmer. This is a small county church that is still very active today. There was a school at the church at one time (in the 1800s). There is very little information on the church, so any help that someone might provide would be greatly appreciated. I am also gathering information on the other churches on the same circuit, Sandy Flat, Price's Chapel (later became the Rose Creek Church), Bethel Springs, and Sulphur Springs. There might have been a time when the Selmer Methodist Church was on the same circuit. Some of the names associated with the church are: Hendrix Cheshier Johnson Price Maxedon Moore Wilson Kernodle Isbell Please email information to David Agnew. If there is any cost in the reproduction of pictures or other items, please contact me and I will be glad to pay those costs. Thanks David Agnew Agnews2@cox.net

    3. Kevin, Put me down for a copy of your book when you get it redone. I had several family members in Capt. Charles Sevier Robertson's Cavalry Company, "Hardin County Yankee Hunters." Until Shiloh, they operated out of Henderson Station, scouting in Hardin and Wayne County east of the Tennessee River and the counties in the southeast part of West Tennessee. Some of these men transferred to the 52nd Tennessee Infantry. After Shiloh, Robertson's Company became "G" Co. of the First Confederate Cavalry Regiment. Much later, many of these men in the 52nd and Co. G of the First, became members of the 21st "Wilson's" Tennessee Cavalry Regiment of Forrest Cavalry Corps. Company "A" under Capt J. A. Russell, Co. "B" under Capt. Ezekiel D. Polk and Co. "H" under Capt. W. B. Hays. According to "The Bugger Saga" by Wade Pruitt, Hays carried out his own little war in Wayne and Hardin Co. in TN and Lauderdale Co. in AL, much like Hurst in West Tennessee. I think Bert was number one on the Union list of the most wanted for a while. 1. Re: [TNMCNAIR] McCann/Hurst Wurst (Was Frankilin Mitchell Books)
    2. I am interested in your book. My g g grandfather served in the civil war - Sixth Tennessee Calvary. Joseph P. McVey and he was from McNairy County Tennessee. How may I acquire a copy of your book. I am sad to read of the nerve of someone else taking your information and applying it in their own book. All kinds of folks make up our world. Thanks for your time to respond. G. Warnett

    1. [TNMCNAIR] McCann/Hurst Wurst (Was Frankilin Mitchell Books)
    2. Rhondina: If I were the quick-draw suing type, I know I would have a case. It looks like Mr. Mitchell copied entire pages and published them in his own book--same fonts, same layout. I remember taking several days alphabetizing the names of members of the Sixth Tennessee Cavalry by company--and he copied the pages and put them into his book, making it look like his own work! (He even left my header, "Appendix A Regimental Roster") I've been told I should sue, but I haven't been able to track him down (I know he lives in Bethel Springs). But the picture of him in the back of his book shows he's an old man, so maybe he didn't know any better. Still, I would like to write him a letter and warn him that the next author he plagarizes from may not be as forgiving as I am. Mary: It's been several years since I did research on my McCann line, but Mose McCann's family does branch from my own. I'll look back through my book and send you an e-mail with the particulars, unless there's anyone else on the mailing list interesed as well. For anyone interested in a copy of my book "Hurst's Wurst," I'm working on a revision with some new details about why Fielding Hurst may have been as mean and vindictive as he is portrayed. If anyone with family members who served in the Sixth Tennessee has information to share about their ancestor's war experiences, please contact me. Or if your families as Unionists suffered at the hands of bushwackers or Confederate soldiers or neighbors, please contact me too. Thanks! Kevin McCann
