    2. George and Sherry Ladd
    3. I am seeking any info on the following Harris family members. I have hit a brick wall! In the 1860 Census they are listed as living in the Monterey district (9) of McNairy County. The names listed are: H.W. Harris, age 49, his wife, Lucinda age 39 Rebecca J. 18 John T. 14 Lucinda 12 Hugh W. 10 (in later censuses he is listed as Hugh D.) Martha 7 Nancy P. 4 Susan E. 1 Rebecca Blay age 65 (she is listed as being born in VA) The marriage records (all marriages took place in McNairy County)I have found are: Martha A. Harris married Samuel Comer September 3, 1882 S.E. Harris married Robert Blasingame December 24, 1883 N.P. Harris married R. D. Utley September 2, 1883 Everyone seems to disappear from McNairy County around the turn of the century.

He was born in 1849 in Tennessee. He is reported to have had brothers named Peter & Bill according to my aunt (who is deceased). I have located a Peter Whitt in McNairy County who served in the 6th Tennessee Cavalry (Union) during the Civil War. However, there were no pension records available for him from the archives. A Samuel R. Whitt also served in the same unit, and pension records were available for him, but gave me no clues. Peter Whitt is listed in McNairy County in the 1870 census, but not after that. My great-grandfather's mothers maiden name was supposedly Clayton (per same aunt). There were Clayton's in McNairy at that time & there are a few Clayton's buried at the Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Finger where most of my family is buried. My guess is that if this Peter Whitt is my great-grandfather's brother, that the Whitts I am looking for should be on the 1860 McNairy County census (as the 6th Tennessee volunteer cavalry is a McNairy County Unit). Would it be possible to look this up for me? I will also run this by you to see if you have any ideas.....My grandfather, William Harrison Whitt was born in Arkansas in 1889. There is no 1890 census. Grrrr..... I am trying to find out who his mother was. She was reportedly one "Ola Whitley". There were Whitleys in McNairy County, in fact my 2nd great uncle married a Whitley. The 1891 Enumeration of Voters for McNairy County lists my gr. grandfather, Andrew Carroll Whitt back in McNairy County at that time. If he was in Arkansas, he didn't stay long. I also know that my grandfather was raised in Oklahoma, but not by his father. His mother died when he was small. My grandfather came back to McNairy County when he was 16 years old. By 1910 he was married to my grandmother, Zelphia Roberta McIntyre. The only thing I can come up with is checking the 1900 Oklahoma census for William Harrison Whitt. He was obviously living in someone elses household. Does this sound feasible? It still does not tell me who his mother is, but I might get clues from who he was living with. Any ideas? A million thanks for your time!!! Tanya Autry Becker --------------207DF2C0777BE76E147D70FD--

    3. Don't know if any of the Hills in McNairy county are researching their family history, but I do know that someone was researching Daniel Hill (don't recall who at the moment). I beleive that he is buried near Bethel Springs (if it is the same one). Also think he was Rev. War vet. I am very interested in any details about life in McNairy County in the early 1800s. In the recently published history of McNairy county, there is only bio on Hills and it does not appear to be the one you are interested in (Walter from NC to Williamson county.....) I would sure like to find out where my >Riley fits into the family. That's ME! Or should I say, I want that to be me... I've only gotten back to Daniel Hill - Eleanor (Ellen, Ellender, take your pick:) Nodding so far. I just recently had the good fortune to meet someone online who was able to help me confirm what family tradition has said, but I don't yet have all the real proof... You and I just have to be somehow connected... I've been trying to get all my facts into my computer so I can figure it out... so far, you keep giving me wonderful little tidbits but I can't connect you to me. I'm really really excited about this McNairy list, though... when I get a little time, I'm gonna have lots of questions! My ggrandmother was Laura Etta Hill b 1867 in MO d 1945 in ID her parents were James Riley Hill b 1829 in MO d 1903 in ID and Mary Ellen Broyles b 1844 in MO d 1902 in MO his parents were James Hill b 1789 in TN d 1881 in MO and Nancy Coleman b 1795 in TN d 1883 in MO his parents were Daniel Hill b 1757 in the Jerseys (where's that?:) d 1848 in TN and Ellender/Eleanor/Ellen Nodding b 1750 d 1880 (not sure on dates) and I've seen all those names for her over time... and that's where I get stuck Daniel moved to Louden County, VA with his father as a child, then to Washington County, NC about 1777, served in Revolutionary War, sold a farm near Nolichucky River in 1803, moved to McNairy County, TN in 1828 with 8 sons & 2 sons in law (according to Tennessee Cousins, but I have 9 sons & 1 daughter, hmmm) Possibly lived in Jefferson County, TN (James supposed birthplace) between 1803 & 1828 and is buried Rose Hill Cemetery, near Bethel Springs, McNairy Co TN (found his tombstone inscription on the internet at <ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/tn/mcnairy/cemetery/rosehill.txt>) At least 2 of his sons, James & possibly Jesse, moved to Missouri possibly as early as 1820? just guessing based on birthdates/places of James & Nancy's children... need to get to the archives and see if I can narrow this down... they moved through Missouri (several counties) and ended up in Mercer County. James Riley Hill was a merchant in Princeton, MO. I'm sort of gathering that more than just Laura Etta moved to Idaho, but I don't know much about that yet. Also, James Riley was a Union Corporal in the Civil War, served from Tennessee I'm told, although he was born in Saline County, MO... I'm guessing that they traveled back and forth to see/live with family that stayed behind. Charlotte Esau cjesau@qni.com Olathe, KS USA

I picked up the phone tonight and called a cemetery in Arkansas where I know that Nancy Hicks Vantrease is buried trying to find out if Sarah's first husband Constantine Ladd (my gggrandfather) was buried there. The gentleman that I talked to didn't know anything about Constantine, but he did stop me when I mentioned Nancy's name. It turned out that she was his great grandmother. Small world.
