    3. Hi! I am fairly new to this list and have been just lurking for a while, to see if I would see anyone kin to me. I am looking for someone else that might be researching the McKAY family. I am descended from Hugh Jackson McKay, who was born 1820 in AL, and I believe that he was the s/o William McKay of Ireland, and his wife Jane ? of SC. I am descended from Robert Franklin McKay, s/o Hugh Jackson and his wife, (possibly Matilda Reece). Robert had a twin sister Mary F. McKay that married a L.H. Marrow. I think that they lived in Ramer, TN and had a daughter, Virgie, that married a Stanfield. I don't know much about this family, but I think that Virgie had two brothers, (at least), Devero and Clyde. Anyone know this family? Do you know of anyone researching the McKay family? I would like to share info with anyone researching this family. Thanks. 3. Members: The year 1867 is the first year we have a surviving property tax list, prior years were lost or destroyed. This will be the first in a series of postings of the year 1867. The list is by district, starting with number one and the property owners are alphabtized. The first column is district number The second column is name of property owner The third colum is number of acres owned The fourth column is dollare value amount of property The fifth column is 1= the person paid a poll tax to vote, 0= the person did not pay a poll tax and therefore was not eligible to vote. The names are spelled the way they appear in the books, I did not correct them, so be sure and look at various spellings when looking for a name. Please do not ask for lookups as I will be posting as time permits. DIST NAME ACRES VALUE P_TAX Page 1 is missing. 1 Atkins, Benjamin 92 150. 1 1 Avery, Nancy 60 100. 0 1 Benshull, A. 3. Descendants of Thomas Hill Generation No. 1 1. THOMAS2 HILL (THOMAS1)1 was born November 19, 1724 in Attleboro, Mass., and died Aft. 1817 in Pulaski Co., Kentucky?. He married MARY HAMBLIN? Abt. 1750 in Maryland or Pennsylvania. Notes for THOMAS HILL: "Thomas Hill migrated to Rhode Island about 1734 with his parents Thomas and mother Abiah. He then migrated to Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He married Mary Hamlin or Mamblen or Hamblin either in Maryland or Pennsylvania. Thomas lived in Pennsylvania for time where his brother William and wife Rachel lived. His first four sons were born in Pennsylvania. About 1765 Thomas and his family moved to Fauquier County, Virginia, then to Pittsylvania Co., Virginia where a number of his children were born. He was a land owner in various parts of Virginia, as seen by the many deeds, Prince William Co., Loudoun Co. to mention a few. Thomas signed the "Oath of Allegiance" and was on Charles Kennon's list in the War in Defense of Virginia, signed 1 January 1778 which is recorded in Chatham Court House, Pittsylvania County, Virginia. A copy is at the D.A.R. Library and at the Virginia State Library. About 1798 and before 1800, the Rev. Thomas Hill and his family received a land grant in Kentucky of 1602 acres as a result of being a patriot in the Rev. War. (Feb. 25, 1800 and Dec. 4, land on Fishing Creek in Lincoln Co.) He presented his credentials as "being in regular communion" with the Baptist Church and leave is granted to celebrate the rites of matrimony. He performed many marriages in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia and then again in Pulaski Co., Kentucky, including that of his daughter Sarah to the Rev. Thomas Hanks.. There was a group of Baptists that came from Pennsylvania early in 1765. (Reuben was born in Pennsylvania in 1761 and was 4 years of age when the family went to Virginia, Statement of Hanks Neville Hill) The group settled in Fauquier Co., Virginia and established the Broad Run church. It is still believed to still exist. Later, around 1769, twenty members from the Broad Run church moved further south into Pittsylvania Co., Virginia and established the Birches Creek church, which later became known as Mill Church and with John Creel as pastor. (John Creel married Rhoda Dodson) This church was in excellent condition in 1974, according to Wm "Bill" Randolph, a Dodson descendant." Notes of O. Josephine (Hill) Adams of Danville, California, September 11, 1978 Much of the Hill, Hanks and Dodson's properties are located on or near Birches Creek, Pigg River, Strawberry and Shadberry Creeks in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. In 1823, My Great-great-greatgrandfather, Martin True applied for a pension for his service in the Revoluntion and stated that he part of the time with Allen Hill. True moved with the Hills, Hanks and Dodson form Pittsylvania Co., Virginia to Pulaski Co., KY and to Maury Co., TN by 1811, leaving Thomas Hill in KY> Thomas was known as Sickle-saw Tom, supposely from his manner of speaking while preaching. Allen Hill was also a preacher and he and his wife are buried in the Hill Cemetery in Madison Co., TN with their large family. My husband and I were at the church and cemetery in Pittsylvania Co., VA in 1985, The small well kept old building is not the orginial and the cemetery did not have any very early tombstones. Small world-In 1794, my father's Thomas Hill helped inventory the estate of my mother's Francis Wisdom in Pittsylvania Co. Then George Hanks fought in the same Texas Regulator- Moderator War in Shelby Co., Texas 1842-1844, that claimed the life of one grandfather, Howell Hudson. His son Eli Hanks was the brother-in-law of Howell Hudson. 3. Norma, Thanks a lot for the information. I forwarded it to Sara, because I read it wrong. That's what happens when you turn on the computer without a cup of coffee or something. The age on this Mollie is wrong for me. It might fit in with Sarah's. My Mollie would have been born a Vantrease, but I am saving the information so that I can check on the other children of Reuben Hicks. Who knows what I might come up with. I'm strange enough to keep anything with a surname I am researching. Thanks again. 3. thought someone might like this! SMITH, CAMPBELL, DEAN I am looking for any information on my gggrandparents John SMITH b. 11-16-1835 he married Harriet CAMPBELL b. 10-6-1846. They had at least one daughter Nancy SMITH b. 4-29-1874 in Savannah, Hardin County, Tenn. She married Robert Lee DEAN b. 10-27-1870. John SMITH is suppose to be full blooded Cherokee. The whole family sometime later picked up and moved to Poinsett County, Arkansas where they are buried. The few grandchildren living who I have touch with say no one ever talked about the past all we know is they came from Tenn. They always changed the subject. Any help in this would really be appreciated. Thank you, Debbie Lopez Debbie Lopez Debbielop@aol.com nbear@worldnet.att.net wrote: > Ellen...This is Norma. Harris you speak of above was in my husband's family line. A brother to his Nathaniel A. Harris. I have never been told that Pinckney was married but then maybe it has been forgotten. Pinckney shows up in the 1860 and 1870 census with his father's family. To date I have not found him on the 1880 census and, of course, there is no 1890 census. I suppose it is possible that sometime shortly after 1870 this Pinckney left McNairy Co., TN., and married had several children, died young, and was brought back to McNairy Co., TN., for burial.
