I know of a Sam Houston that lived in Ok. He was born about 1905 and went to school at East Central State College, Pontonoc County with my Grandfather. He had a photographic memory. All they way through school, he never bought but one book. He would go to my grandfather's and ask to look at this books. He would just turn the pages and go through several chapters like that, put that book down and pick up the next one. He would have all of his reading done for several weeks like that. My Mother always tried to catch him up by using the Bible. But he knew it just as well. Anyone need to check him out further? Thank You Johnita ! I had the info that was on the 1870 McNairy Co. Tn. census, but not the info that was on his stone. I have been told that he is buried next to Hercilla, does his stone give his birth and death date? >From his civil war records I got his birth date as 26 Aug. 1844 and death date as 2 Sept 1915. RAMER FERGUSON Seeking information on the descendants of Henderson Ferguson and Malinda Ramer. Malinda Ramer is the daughter of William M. Ramer and Rachel Prather. McNairy County marriage records has a marriage between Henderson Ferguson and M. J. Ramer, 2 Jan 1872, Ross Ferguson was the Bondsman. Does any one know for sure the M. J. Ramer is Malinda Ramer. To add more confusion, the McNairy county 1880 index there is in Dist 1 Dw 31 a H. Ferguson and wife Virginia J. Looking at the film I think the name of the wife is Varlinda J. Again could this be Malinda Ramer or M. J. Ramer. >From court records it would appear that Henderson Ferguson and Malinda Ramer moved to Texas. An ad in the Dec 26, 1924 edition of the McNairy County Independent states that Milinda Ramer Ferguson is deceased, she has unknown heirs living in Texas. In County Court minutes of Aug 7,1896, B. Ferguson, Edgar Ferguson, Willey Ferguson, Elanor? Ferguson and ? Ferguson are the residents of Texas and are to make defense to the Partion of the land of William Ramer, deceased. Sure would appreciate help I can get on this puzzle. Douglas H. Prather
I might have missed the answer to the question about Sam Houston's visit to McNairy county. Did someone provide a time and a reference. I had seen this in the M. Wright book and had wondered if there were other accounts of his visit to Purdy. Hi, I had responded with just a tidbit of information on Samuel Houston. In a notebook on the Daniel Hill & Eleanor Nodding line there was an entry: "Daniel Hill and his wife Eleanor are both buried in Rose Hill Eemetery about 3 miles from Bethel Springs, McNairy County, Tennessee. On his tomb is, "Daniel Hill born 1750, died 1846 - Soldier of 1775". On Eleanor's tomb is, "Ellen, wife of Daniel Hill, Died 1830, about 80 years of age." They moved from Jefferson County to McNairy County, Tennessee in 1828 and settled 3 miles from Purdy on Cypress Creek. With them went their families, 2 sons-in-law: Thomas Griffin and Isiah Coffman. Where they lived was known as the 'Hill Settlement', one of the largest at that time in the county. Living there were also Old Ben Walker, Whartons, Harwells, Joplins, Kincaids, McAlfrines, Sweats, Magill, Carters, Surratts, Adams, Barnes, Bells, Brooks, Crumps, Devautts, Dennys, Murrays, Wilson, William Beatty, Samuel Houston and the Rankin families. I have no knowledge that this was "the Samuel Houston," but there was a man by that name in McNairy Co. sometime after 1828. Ivalon Hill Fox Ivalonf@aol.com
